    India reported almost 45 million cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) as of October 20, 2023, with more than 44 million recoveries and about 532 thousand fatalities. The number of cases in the country had a decreasing trend in the past months.

    Burden on the healthcare system

    With the world's second largest population in addition to an even worse second wave of the coronavirus pandemic seems to be crushing an already inadequate healthcare system. Despite vast numbers being vaccinated, a new variant seemed to be affecting younger age groups this time around. The lack of ICU beds, black market sales of oxygen cylinders and drugs needed to treat COVID-19, as well as overworked crematoriums resorting to mass burials added to the woes of the country. Foreign aid was promised from various countries including the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Additionally, funding from the central government was expected to boost vaccine production.

    Situation overview
    Even though days in April 2021 saw record-breaking numbers compared to any other country worldwide, a nation-wide lockdown has not been implemented. The largest religious gathering - the Kumbh Mela, sacred to the Hindus, along with election rallies in certain states continue to be held. Some states and union territories including Maharashtra, Delhi, and Karnataka had issued curfews and lockdowns to try to curb the spread of infections.

    As of May 2, 2023, the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had been confirmed in almost every country in the world. The virus had infected over 687 million people worldwide, and the number of deaths had reached almost 6.87 million. The most severely affected countries include the U.S., India, and Brazil.

    COVID-19: background information COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that had not previously been identified in humans. The first case was detected in the Hubei province of China at the end of December 2019. The virus is highly transmissible and coughing and sneezing are the most common forms of transmission, which is similar to the outbreak of the SARS coronavirus that began in 2002 and was thought to have spread via cough and sneeze droplets expelled into the air by infected persons.

    Naming the coronavirus disease Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that can be transmitted between animals and people, causing illnesses that may range from the common cold to more severe respiratory syndromes. In February 2020, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses and the World Health Organization announced official names for both the virus and the disease it causes: SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, respectively. The name of the disease is derived from the words corona, virus, and disease, while the number 19 represents the year that it emerged.

    Context

    From World Health Organization - On 31 December 2019, WHO was alerted to several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. The virus did not match any other known virus. This raised concern because when a virus is new, we do not know how it affects people.

    So daily level information on the affected people can give some interesting insights when it is made available to the broader data science community.

    Johns Hopkins University has made an excellent dashboard using the affected cases data. Data is extracted from the google sheets associated and made available here.

    Edited: Now data is available as csv files in the Johns Hopkins Github repository. Please refer to the github repository for the Terms of Use details. Uploading it here for using it in Kaggle kernels and getting insights from the broader DS community.

    2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people - CDC

    This dataset has daily level information on the number of affected cases, deaths and recovery from 2019 novel coronavirus. Please note that this is a time series data and so the number of cases on any given day is the cumulative number.

    Survey results from countries around the world show that significant shares of people living in the United States, Russia, and Australia believed the media had overblown the coronavirus pandemic. In India, almost three-quarters of respondents said the media had exaggerated the extent of the outbreak.

    Cases surge in the United States At the time of the survey in mid-March 2020, the United States had confirmed around 1,700 COVID-19 cases, leading many respondents to agree that the media had exaggerated the extent of the virus. By the end of April, the U.S. was one of the most severely affected countries worldwide, with more than one million cases. The coronavirus has spread rapidly from coast to coast, and New York and California – two of the most populous states in the country – have recorded the highest number of cases.

    India provides vaccine hope When the media survey was conducted, fewer than 100 coronavirus cases had been confirmed in India, but a sharp increase in numbers soon led to the country’s Prime Minister imposing a nationwide lockdown. As the global race to develop a safe treatment for COVID-19 intensifies, many experts are looking to India. The country has emerged as a major vaccine manufacturer in recent years, developing treatments that are used against leprosy and polio. Several Indian firms have started work on a potential vaccine, but there are many obstacles to overcome, and millions of doses will be needed worldwide.

    This paper describes the lived experiences of health seeking, health care recourse, and well-being of women waste pickers, a highly marginalized sub-population in urban areas in India, highlighting the intersectionality of gender, socioeconomic and cultural contexts, and occupational hazards that they face, as studied by a research team engaged in participatory action research with waste workers in urban India. We note the impact of the superimposition of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the restrictions on movement and access to livelihoods, social support, and health care, and policies made and enforced in a fragmented manner, on the already deprived conditions of the waste pickers. We reflect on the women waste pickers' practices of health seeking, their access to health care, the provisions made for them and made use of by them, and the support they could tap in protecting and restoring their health. A range of these experiences is illustrated through three case studies. Finally, recommendations are made for better provision for women's health and well-being, and improved preparedness for emergency situations.

    As of May 2, 2023, the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had spread to almost every country in the world, and more than 6.86 million people had died after contracting the respiratory virus. Over 1.16 million of these deaths occurred in the United States.

    Waves of infections Almost every country and territory worldwide have been affected by the COVID-19 disease. At the end of 2021 the virus was once again circulating at very high rates, even in countries with relatively high vaccination rates such as the United States and Germany. As rates of new infections increased, some countries in Europe, like Germany and Austria, tightened restrictions once again, specifically targeting those who were not yet vaccinated. However, by spring 2022, rates of new infections had decreased in many countries and restrictions were once again lifted.

    What are the symptoms of the virus? It can take up to 14 days for symptoms of the illness to start being noticed. The most commonly reported symptoms are a fever and a dry cough, leading to shortness of breath. The early symptoms are similar to other common viruses such as the common cold and flu. These illnesses spread more during cold months, but there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that temperature impacts the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Medical advice should be sought if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

    In 2020, the age distribution of TB diagnosed incident cases reflected a prevalence among the adolescent and young adult age groups. This ranges typically from age 15 to 30 years, also indicating an ongoing disease transmission.     With an increasing population of over *** billion, the burden of disease in India is on the rise. Tuberculosis (TB) has been one of India’s major public health concerns. According to an estimate by the WHO, India belongs to the few countries with the largest TB epidemic in the world. One of the key concerns for the country has been relative to totally drug resistant TB (TDR-TB). TDR-TB alludes to tuberculosis strains that are resistant to a wider range of drugs including most second line drugs, than the extensive drug-resistant tuberculosis.

    TB and co-morbidities

    The likelihood of people living with HIV and contracting TB is exponential. De facto, TB is the most common illness contracted among people living with HIV. Other co-morbidities that are common and associated with TB are diabetes and tobacco smoking which has relatively high consumption rates in north India.

    In terms of TB and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, both are diseases that majorly cause deleterious effects to the patient’s lungs. Both present with similar symptoms, however, TB has a longer incubation period and slower onset. A person with TB or both illnesses generally presents with poorer treatment outcomes.
