    Description

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Masterx-AI/Project_Retail_Analysis_with_Walmart/main/Wallmart1.jpg" alt="">

    Description:

One of the leading retail stores in the US, Walmart, would like to predict the sales and demand accurately. There are certain events and holidays which impact sales on each day. There are sales data available for 45 stores of Walmart. The business is facing a challenge due to unforeseen demands and runs out of stock some times, due to the inappropriate machine learning algorithm. An ideal ML algorithm will predict demand accurately and ingest factors like economic conditions including CPI, Unemployment Index, etc.

Walmart runs several promotional markdown events throughout the year. These markdowns precede prominent holidays, the four largest of all, which are the Super Bowl, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The weeks including these holidays are weighted five times higher in the evaluation than non-holiday weeks. Part of the challenge presented by this competition is modeling the effects of markdowns on these holiday weeks in the absence of complete/ideal historical data. Historical sales data for 45 Walmart stores located in different regions are available.

The dataset is taken from Kaggle.

    Objective:

    • Understand the Dataset & cleanup (if required).
    • Build Regression models to predict the sales w.r.t single & multiple features.
    • Also evaluate the models & compare their respective scores like R2, RMSE, etc.

    Description

The Producer Price Index (PPI) is a family of indexes that measures the average change over time in selling prices received by domestic producers of goods and services. PPIs measure price change from the perspective of the seller. This contrasts with other measures, such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI), that measure price change from the purchaser's perspective. Sellers' and purchasers' prices may differ due to government subsidies, sales and excise taxes, and distribution costs. There are three main PPI classification structures which draw from the same pool of price information provided to the BLS by cooperating company reporters: Industry classification. A Producer Price Index for an industry is a measure of changes in prices received for the industry's output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output). The PPI publishes approximately 535 industry price indexes in combination with over 4,000 specific product line and product category sub-indexes, as well as, roughly 500 indexes for groupings of industries. North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) index codes provide comparability with a wide assortment of industry-based data for other economic programs, including productivity, production, employment, wages, and earnings. Commodity classification. The commodity classification structure of the PPI organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment. This system is unique to the PPI and does not match any other standard coding structure. In all, PPI publishes more than 3,700 commodity price indexes for goods and about 800 for services (seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted), organized by product, service, and end use. Commodity-based Final Demand-Intermediate Demand (FD-ID) System. Commodity-based FD-ID price indexes regroup commodity indexes for goods, services, and construction at the subproduct class (six-digit) level, according to the type of buyer and the amount of physical processing or assembling the products have undergone. The PPI publishes over 600 FD-ID indexes (seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted) measuring price change for goods, services, and construction sold to final demand and to intermediate demand. The FD-ID system replaced the PPI stage-of-processing (SOP) system as PPI's primary aggregation model with the release of data for January 2014. The FD-ID system expands coverage in its aggregate measures beyond that of the SOP system by incorporating indexes for services, construction, exports, and government purchases. Description

All data compiled into this dataset is available under public domain. This set is designed to provide some insight into sales trends across the state of Connecticut as well as the individual towns within. It is also specifically structured to highlight changes in trends due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Variables

list_year: grand list year of the property (grand list years run from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30). town: name of the town that the property was sold in. population: population of the town that the property was sold in. residential_type: single family, two family, three family, four family, or condo. month: the month the sale was recorded. year: the year the sale was recorded. in_pandemic: boolean value indicating whether the selling date was after March 11, 2020. assessed_value: tax assessed value of the property at the time of the sale. sale_amount: final closing sale amount of the property. price_index: the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for that month/year. Used to normalize dollar values. norm_assessed_value: CPI-normalized assessed value (assessed_value / price_index * 100). norm_sale_amount: CPI-normalized sale amount (sale_amount / price_index * 100). norm_sales_ratio: CPI-normalized assessment to sale ratio (norm_assessed_value / norm_sale_amount). latitude: latitude for the property's town. longitude: longitude for the property's town.

Note: the original dataset also contained the street address and exact sale date for each record. Those variables were removed as they were not relevant to the analysis being conducted and to afford the individuals associated with each sale a stonger degree of personal privacy. Records from October 2000 to October 2010 from the original dataset were omitted due to timeliness issues. Records of non-residential types were omitted as they lacked enough historic records to be of consequence to the analysis.

As time has passed, retailers have had to evolve in order to keep up with changes in demands and the ever-changing mindset of customers. One such retail industry juggernaut that has kept up with the demands of customers as well changed the face of the retail industry for the better is Walmart Inc.
