TwitterHeat Exposure maps can be used by planners and residents to explore and understand community vulnerability to extreme heat. Heat exposure is not equally distributed throughout the capital region, it is affected by urban heat islands (high concentrations of people, roads and buildings make an area hotter), canopy cover (more trees will help keep an area cool), elevation and in the capital region ocean breezes can have a cooling effect. Surface Temperature demonstrates heat energy given off by surfaces using thermal infrared imaging combined with other factors and is useful to understand changes in development, land use and building energy use.
