Crime data assembled by census block group for the MSA from the Applied Geographic Solutions' (AGS) 1999 and 2005 'CrimeRisk' databases distributed by the Tetrad Computer Applications Inc. CrimeRisk is the result of an extensive analysis of FBI crime statistics. Based on detailed modeling of the relationships between crime and demographics, CrimeRisk provides an accurate view of the relative risk of specific crime types at the block group level. Data from 1990 - 1996,1999, and 2004-2005 were used to compute the attributes, please refer to the 'Supplemental Information' section of the metadata for more details. Attributes are available for two categories of crimes, personal crimes and property crimes, along with total and personal crime indices. CrimeRisk is a block group and higher level geographic database consisting of a series of standardized indexes for a range of serious crimes against both persons and property. It is derived from an extensive analysis of several years of crime reports from the vast majority of law enforcement jurisdictions nationwide. The crimes included in the database are the "Part I" crimes and include murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft. These categories are the primary reporting categories used by the FBI in its Uniform Crime Report (UCR), with the exception of Arson, for which data is very inconsistently reported at the jurisdictional level. Part II crimes are not reported in the detail databases and are generally available only for selected areas or at high levels of geography. This study focused on the effect of economic resources and racial/ethnic composition on the change in crime rates from 1970-2004 in United States cities in metropolitan areas that experienced a large growth in population after World War II. A total of 352 cities in the following United States metropolitan areas were selected for this study: Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Orange County, Orlando, Phoenix, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Silicon Valley (Santa Clara), and Tampa/St. Petersburg. Selection was based on the fact that these areas developed during a similar time period and followed comparable development trajectories. In particular, these 14 areas, known as the "boomburbs" for their dramatic, post-World War II population growth, all faced issues relating to the rapid growth of tract-style housing and the subsequent development of low density, urban sprawls. The study combined place-level data obtained from the United States Census with crime data from the Uniform Crime Reports for five categories of Type I crimes: aggravated assaults, robberies, murders, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts. The dataset contains a total of 247 variables pertaining to crime, economic resources, and race/ethnic composition.

This data collection contains a revised SMSA (Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area) aggregate version of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) statistics gathered from 1966-1976, in which original UCR agency records are combined to produce several types of crime rates, by SMSA, for eight crimes. The data were prepared by the Hoover Institution for Economic Studies of the Criminal Justice System, at Stanford University. The data in the file are an aggregation of all relevant law enforcement reporting agencies into 291 SMSAs, and corresponding approximate aggregations of crime rates and dispositions. Each record contains crime rates for one SMSA in one specific year, with data including annual statistics of eight index crimes, i.e., murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Calculations include offense-based clearance rates (the number of clearances of juvenile clearances per reported offense), clearance-based rates (the number of persons charged per offense cleared by arrest), and charge-based rates (the number of persons whose cases were disposed in a particular manner per person charged). The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), previously the National Crime Survey (NCS), has been collecting data on personal and household victimization through an ongoing survey of a nationally-representative sample of residential addresses since 1973. The survey is administered by the United States Census Bureau (under the United States Department of Commerce) on behalf of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (under the United States Department of Justice). Occasionally there have been extract or supplement files created from the NCVS and NCS data series. This extract contains two data files, a weighted person-based file, and a weighted incident-based file, which contain the "core" counties within the top 40 National Crime Victimization Survey Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Core counties within these MSAs are defined as those self-representing primary sampling units that are common to the MSA definitions determined by the Office of Management and Budget for the 1970-based, 1980-based, and 1990-based sample designs. Each MSA is comprised of only the core counties and not all counties within the MSA. The person-based file contains select household and person variables for all people in NCVS-interviewed households in the core counties of the 40 largest MSAs from January 1979 through December 2004. The incident-based file contains select household, person, and incident variables for persons who reported a violent crime within any of the core counties of the 40 largest MSAs from January 1979 through December 2004. Household, person, and incident information for persons reporting non-violent crime are excluded from this file. The 40 largest MSAs were determined based on the number of household interviews in an MSA.
Serious violent crimes consist of Part 1 offenses as defined by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Uniform Reporting Statistics. These include murders, nonnegligent homicides, rapes (legacy and revised), robberies, and aggravated assaults. LAPD data were used for City of Los Angeles, LASD data were used for unincorporated areas and cities that contract with LASD for law enforcement services, and CA Attorney General data were used for all other cities with local police departments. This indicator is based on location of residence. Single-year data are only available for Los Angeles County overall, Service Planning Areas, Supervisorial Districts, City of Los Angeles overall, and City of Los Angeles Council Districts.Neighborhood violence and crime can have a harmful impact on all members of a community. The study contains cross-section data on the relationship between aggregate levels of punishment and crime rates. It examines deterrent effects of punishment on seven Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) index crimes: murder, rape, assault, larceny, robbery, burglary, and auto theft, committed in 1960 in 47 states of the United States (excluded were New Jersey, Alaska, and Hawaii). For each state, the data include variables for the reported crime rates for each of the seven index crimes. For each of the index crimes, there are two sanction variables included: the probability of prison commitment and the average time served by those sentenced (severity of punishment). There are 11 socioeconomic variables, including family income, income distribution, unemployment rate for urban males in the age groups 14-24 and 35-39, labor force participation rate, educational level, percentage of young males in population, percentage of non-white young males living in the population, percentage of population living in Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, sex ratio, and place of occurrence. The data also include per capita police expenditures for 1959 and 1960. A related data collection is PARTICIPATION IN ILLEGITIMATE ACTIVITIES: EHRLICH REVISITED, 1960 (ICPSR 8677). Through a cooperative agreement, RTI International worked with the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) to create public-use files of victimization data for the 52 largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) covering the 2000-2015 survey years. The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is one of two national indicators of crime in the U.S. Historically, NCVS estimates of crime were not available at the state or local level because, prior to 2016, the NCVS sample was designed to exclusively produce national estimates. It is important to be able to understand victimization and victimization risk at the local level to inform and improve crime prevention efforts, investigation and victim response practices, and the location and mix of victim services. To protect respondent confidentiality, with a few exceptions, subnational identifiers are traditionally not included on NCVS public-use files. Instead, information required to conduct analyses of crime at subnational levels must be accessed through a Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) by obtaining Special Sworn Status from the U.S. Census Bureau. To provide a greater number of analysts with access to NCVS subnational data, in 2007 the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) released a public-use file containing person- and incident-level data from 1979-2004 for the "core" counties (i.e., self-representing PSUs) within the 40 largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). To accommodate interest from analysts and other interested parties in updating the file with more recent data, BJS has created public-use files for the 52 largest MSAs covering the 2000-2015 survey years. The 52 MSAs included on these files are those with a 2015 population of 1 million or more persons and an average annual NCVS sample size of at least 250 persons during the period of 2006-2015. While some of the MSAs from these files were also included on the 1979-2004 version, the definitions used to define MSAs are not the same. The 1979-2004 files were based on the "core" counties that were common to the MSA definitions determined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for the 1970-, 1980-, and 1990-based NCVS sample designs. For the current files (i.e., 2000-2015), MSA definitions are based on the most recent delineation files available from OMB at the time of data collection for each survey year included on the files.

Abstract (en): These data provide official index crime rates and social and economic indicators of crime rates at three levels of aggregation (city, state, and metropolitan areas) for four decennial years: 1950, 1960, 1970, and 1980. Information is provided on Uniform Crime Reports murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny theft, and vehicle theft rates per 100,000 population. Social and economic indicators include percent black population, percent divorced males, the mean and median family incomes, families below the poverty line, and percent unemployed for each area. The availability of the data for the crime rates in 1980 determined the geographic locations included in the data collection. Data from earlier years do not exist for all geographic locations for which data were available in 1980. ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data.
