Crime Risk Data includes crime risk indexes and projections on detailed crime types like murder and motor vehicle theft, and summary indexes of crimes against persons, crimes against property and overall crime risk. Crime Risk Data is available at the highly detailed census block level to capture the different risk levels across business and residential places. It is derived from an extensive analysis of several years of crime reports from the vast majority of law enforcement jurisdictions nationwide.
The crimes included in the Crime Risk Data database are the “Part 1” crimes and include murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft. These categories are the primary reporting categories used by the FBI in its Uniform Crime Report (UCR), with the exception of Arson, for which data is very inconsistently reported at the jurisdictional level. In accordance with the reporting procedures using in the UCR reports, aggregate indexes have been prepared for personal and property crimes separately, as well as a total index. While this provides a useful measure of the relative “overall” crime rate in an area, it must be recognized that these are unweighted indexes, in that a murder is weighted no more heavily than a purse snatching in the computation. For this reason, caution is advised when using any of the aggregate index values. In 2020, 5-Year Projections were added to the database.

Methodology: Crime is tracked for multiple years using both FBI aggregate crime reports and for many parts of the country at the individual incident level. A complex set of statistical models are used to estimate and forecast risk of each individual crime type by using land use data in conjunction with demographic and business characteristics.

There has been little research on United States homicide rates from a long-term perspective, primarily because there has been no consistent data series on a particular place preceding the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), which began its first full year in 1931. To fill this research gap, this project created a data series on homicides per capita for New York City that spans two centuries. The goal was to create a site-specific, individual-based data series that could be used to examine major social shifts related to homicide, such as mass immigration, urban growth, war, demographic changes, and changes in laws. Data were also gathered on various other sites, particularly in England, to allow for comparisons on important issues, such as the post-World War II wave of violence. The basic approach to the data collection was to obtain the best possible estimate of annual counts and the most complete information on individual homicides. The annual count data (Parts 1 and 3) were derived from multiple sources, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reports and Supplementary Homicide Reports, as well as other official counts from the New York City Police Department and the City Inspector in the early 19th century. The data include a combined count of murder and manslaughter because charge bargaining often blurs this legal distinction. The individual-level data (Part 2) were drawn from coroners' indictments held by the New York City Municipal Archives, and from daily newspapers. Duplication was avoided by keeping a record for each victim. The estimation technique known as "capture-recapture" was used to estimate homicides not listed in either source. Part 1 variables include counts of New York City homicides, arrests, and convictions, as well as the homicide rate, race or ethnicity and gender of victims, type of weapon used, and source of data. Part 2 includes the date of the murder, the age, sex, and race of the offender and victim, and whether the case led to an arrest, trial, conviction, execution, or pardon. Part 3 contains annual homicide counts and rates for various comparison sites including Liverpool, London, Kent, Canada, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco.

The Aboriginal Justice Strategy (AJS), now known as the Indigenous Justice Program, supports community-based justice programs that offer alternatives to mainstream justice processes in appropriate circumstances. Created to provide alternatives to the mainstream system, the Indigenous Justice program provides funding to communities through two categories: The Community-Based Justice fund and the Capacity-Building Fund.
Community-Based Justice currently funds 197 community-based programs that serve over 750 communities.he objectives of the Community-Based Justice Fund component are:
to allow Indigenous people the opportunity to assume greater responsibility for the administration of justice in their communities; to help reduce the rates of crime and incarceration among Indigenous people in communities with cost-shared programs; and, to foster improved responsiveness, fairness, inclusiveness, and effectiveness of the justice system with respect to justice and its administration so as to meet the needs and aspirations of Indigenous people.
The Capacity-Building Fund is designed to support capacity-building efforts in Indigenous communities, particularly as they relate to building increased knowledge and skills for the establishment and management of community-based justice programs. The objectives of the Capacity-Building Fund are:
to support the training and/or developmental needs of Indigenous communities that currently do not have community-based justice programs; to supplement the on-going training needs of current community-based justice programs where the cost-shared budget does not adequately meet these needs, including supporting evaluation activities, data collection, sharing of best practices and useful models; to support activities targeted at improved community reporting in IJP communities and the development of data management systems; to support the development of new justice programs, paying particular attention to: the current geographic/regional imbalance in programming; the commitment to develop new programs in the under-represented program models, such as dispute resolution for civil and family/child welfare; and, to support one-time or annual events and initiatives (as opposed to on-going projects and programs) that build bridges, trust and partnerships between the mainstream justice system and Indigenous communities.
Co-ordinated by the Statistical Service of the Ministry of Justice of the Netherlands, this study aims at obtaining comparable data on crime in various countries. Since official statistics provide information that is heavily dependent on the organization of the police and the justice system in each country, the study's approach is to study the incidence of crime in the population - the degree of victimization in the population - by means of an international survey of the population. 14 countries participated in the 1989 survey: USA, Canada, Australia, France, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Spain, Federal Republic of Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Finland, as well as two cities, Warsaw (Poland) and Surabaja (Indonesia). Japan participated on the basis of a somewhat modified questionnaire and sampling. The survey was resumed in 1992 in the following countries: England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, USA, Canada, Australia, and additionally Sweden, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Georgia, Estonia, Indonesia and Costa Rica. On the other hand, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Norway, Spain and Japan didn't take part. Selected cities in the following countries also took part: Argentina, Albania, India, South Africa, Russia, Slovenia, Uganda, Brazil, Philippines, Egypt, Tanzania, Tunisia, China. The following crimes were investigated by the investigation: car theft, motorcycle theft, moped theft and bicycles theft, burglary, robbery, simple theft and pickpocketing, sexual assault, assault and battery, threats. Respondents who were victims of such crimes were asked a few brief questions about the place of the offense, the material consequences, the report to the police, the satisfaction with the police action, and the received assistance. All the interviewees were also asked to express themselves about their fear of crime, their satisfaction with the local police, their preventive attitude towards crime, how severely they would sentence a 21-year-old repeat burglar. Note that the questionnaire has evolved between successive surveys. After 1992, the survey was resumed twice at the international level and once at the Swiss level.
