    Description

There were three key objectives to this study: (1) to determine the relative importance of crime-related as well as business-related factors in business relocation decisions, including business ownership, type of business, and business size, (2) to ascertain how businesses respond to crime and fear of crime, such as by moving, adding more security, requesting police protection, or cooperating with other businesses, and (3) to identify the types of crime prevention measures and assistance that businesses currently need and to assess the roles of business associations and police departments in providing enhanced crime prevention assistance. From November 1995 through February 1996 a mail survey was distributed to a sample of three different groups of businesses in Austin's 14 highest crime ZIP codes. The groups consisted of: (1) businesses that remained within the same ZIP code between 1990 and 1993, (2) new firms that either moved into a high-crime ZIP code area between 1990 and 1993 or were created in a high-crime ZIP code between 1990 and 1993, and (3) businesses that relocated from high-crime ZIP code areas to other locations in Austin's metropolitan area or elsewhere in Texas. Variables include type of business, ownership of business, number of employees, reasons for moving or staying in neighborhood, types of crime that affected business, owner's response to business crime, customer safety, and the role of business associations and the police in preventing crime.

    Description

DATASET DESCRIPTION: This dataset is a filtered view of the APD Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Incident dataset and contains information only on incidents that were related to mental health.

A CAD incident may be related to mental health for the following reasons: 1.) The initial or final incident description indicated a mental health component. 2.) The call disposition description indicated that the call response involved a mental health component. 3.) A crisis counselor was assigned to the call. 4.) An individual called 911 and asked for mental health services or the 911 call taker assessed that there was a mental health component to the call. 5.) The subject of a use of force related to the CAD incident was assessed to have displayed Emotionally Disturbed Person (EDP) conduct.

This data excludes records that were cancelled after being identified as duplicates of the same incident, such as when two 911 calls are made for the same incident. It also excludes records that were cancelled because they were handled by another agency such as Austin Fire or Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services or because they were found to not require a police response.

GENERAL ORDERS RELATED TO THIS DATA: The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Unit and (CIT) officers address and respond to any calls for police assistance related to the mental health community, including Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and cognitive disorders. This order sets guidelines for utilizing the CIT Unit and the certified CIT officers assigned to field duty.
