    Description

The product crowdfunding market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing consumer preference for unique products, the desire for early access to innovative offerings, and the empowerment of creators to bypass traditional funding channels. The market size in 2025 is estimated at $15 billion, demonstrating significant expansion from its 2019 level. This robust growth trajectory is projected to continue, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 15% forecasted from 2025 to 2033. This substantial CAGR is fueled by several key factors, including the expansion of platforms catering to diverse product categories and funding models (donation, debt, rewards, equity), coupled with heightened technological adoption and increased investor confidence in the crowdfunding model. The market's segmentation, encompassing diverse product applications across individual creators and startup companies, further enhances its growth potential. The increasing sophistication of crowdfunding platforms, improved marketing capabilities, and enhanced due diligence procedures are also contributing factors to this positive outlook. The geographic distribution of this market showcases significant regional variations. North America currently holds the largest market share, boosted by a high concentration of crowdfunding platforms and a culture that strongly supports entrepreneurial ventures. However, Asia Pacific, particularly China and India, demonstrates considerable growth potential, driven by rising disposable incomes and a surge in online engagement. Europe's mature market is also projected to continue its steady expansion, further diversifying the global landscape of product crowdfunding. Despite these positive trends, certain restraints exist, including regulatory complexities, challenges in managing risk and fraud, and the need for improved financial literacy among both creators and backers. Overcoming these challenges will be crucial in realizing the full potential of this dynamic and rapidly evolving market.

    Crowdfunding – additional information

Crowdfunding, also called crowd sourcing, is a form of collecting money from large number of people all over the world, usually online, in order to fund a project run by individuals or companies. In the last years, the crowdunfing platforms have experienced a rapid growth and nowadays there are numerous crowdfunding websites supporting various projects.

Crowd sourcing has become a form of alternative financing, an option of collecting money in the times when, especially after the 2008 financial crisis, banks have become very careful and not willing to extend the credit to less creditworthy applicants. The funding resources pooled in the crowdfunding campaigns have therefore supported, at least to some extent, the economic growth worldwide.

The funding volume amounted to 530 million U.S. dollars in 2009 and almost tripled within the following three years as crowdfunding became more and more popular globally and gained new followers. In 2012, the majority of crowdfunding platforms were based in the United States and Europe. In Europe, the highest number of crowd sourcing platforms was available the United Kingdom, Netherlands and France.

    Description

Crowdfunding is a new type of financing favored by entrepreneurs in need of capital. Financing performance is a key concern for crowdfunding project initiators. Although a growing number of studies have investigated the factors that affect the financing performance of crowdfunding projects, there are still some issues that need to be further clarified. How does the investment behavior of backers, as the supply side of finance, affect the financing performance of project in reward-based crowdfunding? What are the moderating mechanisms of this influence by initiator characteristics and project attributes? Based on a panel data set from Zhongchou, a famous agri-food crowdfunding platform in China, this paper finds that the investment speed, the investment intensity, the number of early backers, the backers’ comments, and the number of selfless backers all have significant effects on financing performance. The core trust factors of initiator characteristics and project attributes play a moderating role in the relationship between backer investment behavior and financing performance, but there are differences in the moderating mechanisms. Based on the research conclusions, practical enlightenment is proposed for initiators, crowdfunding platforms, and regulators.

    Description

The statistic shows the percentage growth in the number of crowdfunding platforms worldwide from 2008 to 2012. In 2008, the number of crowdfunding platforms worldwide increased by 38 percent in comparison to the previous year. The rate of crowdfunding platform growth continued in all of the following years and the growth rate reached 60 percent in 2012. The total number of crowdfunding platforms worldwide as of April 2012 amounted to 342, the estimated number by the end of December 2012 was at 536.

    The growth of crowdfunding platforms

Crowdfunding or crowd sourcing is the collective effort of a number of individuals who pool together resources, usually online, in order to support the efforts of individuals or organizations wishing to get their project off the ground.

After the launch of ArtistShare, the site that is often billed as being the first crowdfunding site, the growth in the number of platforms has been constant. The trends began to show in the United States towards the mid-2000s and then in Europe. The increase in the funding volume increases over the past few years are a clear sign of the developing prevalence of this method and raises some interesting questions over the true extent of its potential.

In the world after the 2008 economic crisis, a world of fragile and uncertain growth and austerity, it has been proven that it is often extremely difficult for small and medium-sized businesses to procure capital loans from banks. This driver of economic growth is, at least to some extent, being helped along by those who support crowdfunding campaigns online.

    Description

Crowdfunding occurs when a number of private individuals each pays a small amount of money to support a project. As of 2016, this process had raised 738.9 million U.S. dollars globally.

    How does crowdfunding work?

There are three main types of crowdfunding: peer-to-peer lending, rewards and donation crowdfunding, and equity crowdfunding. The first type offers the fundraiser to secure a loan without using a financial institution. The second is purely a donation strategy, though donors often get discounts on goods produced by the project. Equity fundraising enables small businesses to generate capital directly from investors without an initial public offering.

    Successful campaigns

Kickstarter is a large crowdfunding platform focused on donation crowdfunding. Most projects are not successfully funded, meaning that no money changes hands. However, those that are successful can raise a significant amount of money, with a few hundred projects raising over a million dollars. This shows that there is a demand for Kickstarter’s service, and this demand for crowdfunding is likely to increase in the coming years.
