Background: Crude oil is a naturally occurring, unrefined petroleum product composed of hydrocarbon deposits and other organic materials. It is a fossil fuel that is refined to produce usable products such as gasoline, diesel, and various forms of petrochemicals. The United States imports crude oil from various countries to supplement its domestic production.
This dataset provides detailed information about U.S. crude oil imports by month for every year from 2009 to 2024. The data includes the country of origin, the U.S. port of entry, the name of the oil company, the type of crude oil, and the volume imported (in thousands of barrels).
The dataset is provided in a CSV format with the following columns:
| Column Name | Description |
|---|---|
year | The year of the import. |
month | The month of the import. |
originName | The name of the place where the crude oil was exported from. |
originTypeName | The type of location the crude oil was exported from (e.g. country, region, etc.). |
destinationName | The name of the place in the U.S. receiving the crude oil. |
destinationTypeName | The type of destination (e.g., port, refinery). |
gradeName | The grade or type of crude oil imported (e.g., Light Sweet, Heavy Sour). |
quantity | The volume of crude oil imported, measured in thousands of barrels. |
This dataset can be used for various purposes, including: 1. Analyzing U.S. crude oil import patterns: The data can help identify the major countries exporting crude oil to the United States, the most common grades of crude oil imported, and the primary ports of entry. 2. Investigating the impact of crude oil imports on the U.S. economy: By combining this data with other economic indicators, researchers can explore the relationship between crude oil imports and various aspects of the U.S. economy, such as GDP, employment, and inflation. 3. Optimizing supply chain management: Oil companies and refineries can use this data to better understand their supply chains and make informed decisions about sourcing, transportation, and storage of crude oil. 4. Forecasting future trends: By analyzing historical import data, researchers can develop models to forecast future trends in U.S. crude oil imports, which can help inform policy decisions and business strategies. 5. Environmental impact assessment: The data can be used to estimate the environmental impact of crude oil imports, such as the carbon footprint associated with transportation and refining processes.
Overall, this dataset provides a comprehensive overview of U.S. crude oil imports for January 2009, offering valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals interested in the energy sector and its impact on the U.S. economy.

TwitterTexas is by far the largest oil-producing state in the United States. In 2024, Texas produced a total of over two billion barrels. In a distant second place is New Mexico, which produced 744.6 million barrels in the same year. Virginia is the smallest producing state in the country, at three thousand barrels. Macro perspective of U.S. oil production The U.S. oil production totaled some 19.4 million barrels of oil per day, or a total annual oil production of 827 million metric tons in 2023. As the largest oil producer in the U.S., it is not surprising that Texas is home to the most productive U.S. oil basin, the Permian. The Permian has routinely accounted for at least 50 percent of total onshore production. Regional distribution of U.S. oil production A total of 32 of the 50 U.S. states produce oil. There are five regional divisions for oil production in the U.S., known as the Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts (PADD). These five regional divisions of the allocation of fuels derived from petroleum products were established in the U.S. during the Second World War and they are still used today for data collection purposes. In line with the fact that Texas is by far the largest U.S. oil producing state, PADD 3 (Gulf Coast) is also the largest oil producing PADD, as it also includes the federal offshore region in the Gulf of Mexico. There are around 590 operational oil and gas rigs in the country as of February 2025.

TwitterOn October 27, 2025, the Brent crude oil price stood at 65.14 U.S. dollars per barrel, compared to 61.31 U.S. dollars for WTI oil and 67.54 U.S. dollars for the OPEC basket. Oil prices rose slightly that week.Europe's Brent crude oil, the U.S. WTI crude oil, and OPEC's basket are three of the most important benchmarks used by traders as reference for global oil and gasoline prices. Lowest ever oil prices during coronavirus pandemic In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic resulted in crude oil prices hitting a major slump as oil demand drastically declined following lockdowns and travel restrictions. Initial outlooks and uncertainty surrounding the course of the pandemic brought about a disagreement between two of the largest oil producers, Russia and Saudi Arabia, in early March. Bilateral talks between global oil producers ended in agreement on April 13th, with promises to cut petroleum output and hopes rising that these might help stabilize the oil price in the coming weeks. However, with storage facilities and oil tankers quickly filling up, fears grew over where to store excess oil, leading to benchmark prices seeing record negative prices between April 20 and April 22, 2020. How crude oil prices are determined As with most commodities, crude oil prices are impacted by supply and demand, as well as inventories and market sentiment. However, as oil is most often traded in future contracts (where a contract is agreed upon while product delivery will follow in the next two to three months), market speculation is one of the principal determinants for oil prices. Traders make conclusions on how production output and consumer demand will likely develop over the coming months, leaving room for uncertainty. Spot prices differ from futures in so far as they reflect the current market price of a commodity.

TwitterIn September 2025, roughly ***** million metric tons of crude oil were produced in China. This was an increase compared to the same month in the previous year. Crude oil industry leaders and consumer groups China's leading oil, gas, and petrochemical companies are state-owned enterprises Sinopec and Petrochina. In 2023, they reported whopping annual revenues of around *** and *** trillion yuan, respectively. Their business performance is in part driven by increasing demand for oil and oil products by the automotive industry. With over *** million cars sold each month, automobile sales in China stimulate demand for petroleum-based motor fuels. This is also reflected in the production of refinery products, such as gasoline and diesel. China's growing appetite for primary energy As the wealth of its residents grows, so too does the country's demand for primary energy sources. In 2023, China was ranked the world's largest primary energy consumer. Crude oil consumption has been climbing continuously in the past few years, although coal remains the most dominant energy source in the country. Together, coal and oil make up the lion’s share in China’s primary energy consumption.

TwitterThe United States produced the most oil in the world in 2024, at around ************ barrels of oil per day on average. Saudi Arabia and Russia followed as the second and third largest producers, and also rank amongst the top countries with highest oil exports. OPEC production share Many of the top oil-producing countries belong to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, also known as OPEC. The group was founded in 1960 by five original members: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. As of 2023, 15 nations belong to OPEC, and the organization holds powerful influence on the prices of oil, with some ** percent of the total global share of crude oil production coming from OPEC. Increased production in the United States The United States was not always the largest producer of oil, but imported oil at higher rates before the 2008 financial crisis. As foreign oil prices peaked during the Recession, investors sought to develop technology to extract more oil domestically, notably through hydraulic fracturing. Since then, oil production in the United States has nearly doubled, reducing the need for imports.

TwitterThe world holds around ************* barrels in proved crude oil reserves as of 2023. This is excluding oil sands. Since 1960, there has been a marked increase in oil reserves, especially in the decade between 1960 and 1970. Regional distribution of oil reserves As the volume of global oil reserves grew, the regional balance of proved oil reserves also shifted. In the 1960s, more than ** percent of proved reserves worldwide were in the Middle East. By 2023, the region still made up around ** percent, but had lost its shares to Latin America, which benefited from oil sands discoveries in Venezuela. Venezuela’s oil boom High increases in proved oil reserves in Central and South America predominantly came from Venezuela, and impacted regional distribution worldwide. The country’s proven oil reserves drastically increased when the energy and oil ministry certified vast quantities of oil sands in the Faja del Orinoco region, known as the Orinoco Belt. In 2011, Venezuela overtook Saudi Arabia as the country with the highest share of proven oil reserves in the world.
