    Description

Between 1775 and 1841, the population of Cuba grew to almost six times its size, from approximately 170 thousand people to over one million. During these years, Cuba was a Spanish colony, where slavery remained legal. In 1841, slaves counted for almost 45% of the total population.

Sugar industry A large reason for this growth was the emergence of the sugar industry, as production was relocated from areas of the Caribbean where slavery was abolished (most notably Haiti in 1804 and Jamaica in 1834). Although Cuba had been a Spanish colony for almost three centuries before these figures begin, it was economically isolated and trade with other nations was restricted; following a brief occupation by the British in the 1860s, international trade became encouraged, and a slave-based plantation complex emerged. By the middle of the 19th century, Cuba had established itself as the largest producer of sugar in the world (a position that it held until the mid-20th century), with the U.S. as it's primary consumer.

Gender differences From the figures for 1827 and 1841, the disparities between the male and female populations become apparent. Males migrated to the Americas at a much higher rate than females, while African males were also captured and enslaved at a higher rate than females during the Atlantic slave trade. This is reflected in the slave and white populations, although the difference within the slave population is much greater. Conversely, among free people of color, the female population population is actually higher than the number of males; this was due to a number of reasons, such as higher rates of manumission among females (the ratio of female to male manumissions was estimated to be around 3:2 in the Caribbean in the 19th century) and higher life expectancy.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Cuba population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Cuba across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Cuba was 1,140, a 1.30% decrease year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Cuba population was 1,155, a decline of 1.11% compared to a population of 1,168 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Cuba decreased by 286. In this period, the peak population was 1,426 in the year 2000. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

The data reached an all-time high of 0.327 % in 1990 and a record low of 0.117 % in 2015. Cuba CU: International Migrant Stock: % of Population data remains active status in CEIC and is reported by World Bank. The data is categorized under Global Database’s Cuba – Table CU.World Bank.WDI: Population and Urbanization Statistics. International migrant stock is the number of people born in a country other than that in which they live. It also includes refugees. The data used to estimate the international migrant stock at a particular time are obtained mainly from population censuses. The estimates are derived from the data on foreign-born population--people who have residence in one country but were born in another country. When data on the foreign-born population are not available, data on foreign population--that is, people who are citizens of a country other than the country in which they reside--are used as estimates. After the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 people living in one of the newly independent countries who were born in another were classified as international migrants. Estimates of migrant stock in the newly independent states from 1990 on are based on the 1989 census of the Soviet Union. For countries with information on the international migrant stock for at least two points in time, interpolation or extrapolation was used to estimate the international migrant stock on July 1 of the reference years. For countries with only one observation, estimates for the reference years were derived using rates of change in the migrant stock in the years preceding or following the single observation available. A model was used to estimate migrants for countries that had no data.;United Nations Population Division, Trends in Total Migrant Stock: 2008 Revision.;Weighted average;

In 2022, the population of Cuba was 138, a 1.43% decrease year-by-year from 2021. Previously, in 2021, Cuba population was 140, an increase of 0.72% compared to a population of 139 in 2020. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2022, population of Cuba decreased by 91. In this period, the peak population was 229 in the year 2000. Description

Using ∼60,000 SNPs selected for minimal linkage disequilibrium, we perform population structure analysis of 1,374 unrelated Hispanic individuals from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), with self-identification corresponding to Central America (n = 93), Cuba (n = 50), the Dominican Republic (n = 203), Mexico (n = 708), Puerto Rico (n = 192), and South America (n = 111). By projection of principal components (PCs) of ancestry to samples from the HapMap phase III and the Human Genome Diversity Panel (HGDP), we show the first two PCs quantify the Caucasian, African, and Native American origins, while the third and fourth PCs bring out an axis that aligns with known South-to-North geographic location of HGDP Native American samples and further separates MESA Mexican versus Central/South American samples along the same axis. Using k-means clustering computed from the first four PCs, we define four subgroups of the MESA Hispanic cohort that show close agreement with self-identification, labeling the clusters as primarily Dominican/Cuban, Mexican, Central/South American, and Puerto Rican. To demonstrate our recommendations for genetic analysis in the MESA Hispanic cohort, we present pooled and stratified association analysis of triglycerides for selected SNPs in the LPL and TRIB1 gene regions, previously reported in GWAS of triglycerides in Caucasians but as yet unconfirmed in Hispanic populations. We report statistically significant evidence for genetic association in both genes, and we further demonstrate the importance of considering population substructure and genetic heterogeneity in genetic association studies performed in the United States Hispanic population.

The data were collected by U.S.G.S. biologists and their partners during several field trips from March 2013 to April 2014 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Data were collected during the manatee health assessments. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Sirenia Project is a federal research effort focusing on manatee biology and ecology with a long history of studies in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the international arena. The status of the Antillean manatee in Cuba is not well known. Manatee population census techniques are mostly prohibited due to regulation of the airspace, but it is speculated that the population of manatee in Cuba is not very large. Manatee captures will enable health assessments and radio tagging to determine movement patterns.

    Cuban Mojo Marinade Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the global Cuban Mojo Marinade market size reached USD 1.12 billion in 2024, with a robust year-on-year growth trajectory. The market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 6.8% during the forecast period, reaching a projected value of USD 2.18 billion by 2033. This significant growth is primarily driven by the rising global demand for ethnic and authentic culinary experiences, as well as the increasing incorporation of Cuban flavors into mainstream food products. As per our comprehensive analysis, the Cuban Mojo Marinade market is witnessing dynamic expansion, fueled by consumer interest in bold, zesty, and versatile marinades that cater to both home cooks and professional chefs seeking to diversify their flavor profiles.

A key growth factor for the Cuban Mojo Marinade market is the ongoing trend of culinary globalization. Consumers worldwide are increasingly seeking unique and exotic flavors, and Cuban Mojo Marinade, with its distinctive blend of citrus, garlic, and spices, fulfills this demand. Food enthusiasts and adventurous eaters are drawn to the marinade’s versatility, which allows it to be used for marinating meats, vegetables, and even as a finishing sauce. The proliferation of cooking shows, social media food influencers, and online recipe platforms has further amplified the visibility and desirability of Cuban Mojo Marinade, propelling its adoption across various demographic groups. Moreover, the growing Hispanic population in key regions such as North America and Europe has played a crucial role in introducing and popularizing traditional Cuban condiments, thereby boosting market growth.

Another significant growth driver is the rapid expansion of the food service and ready-to-eat (RTE) sectors. Restaurants, fast-casual dining outlets, and food trucks are increasingly incorporating Cuban Mojo Marinade into their menus to offer authentic Cuban-inspired dishes and attract a broader customer base. This trend is mirrored in the food processing industry, where manufacturers are launching pre-marinated meats and convenience foods featuring Mojo flavors. The rising demand for convenient meal solutions with gourmet appeal has led to increased innovation in product formulations, packaging, and distribution, thereby enhancing market penetration. Additionally, the surge in at-home cooking, particularly in the wake of global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, has further stimulated the retail demand for Cuban Mojo Marinade, as consumers seek to replicate restaurant-quality flavors in their own kitchens.

Health and wellness trends are also influencing the Cuban Mojo Marinade market. As consumers become more health-conscious, there is a growing preference for marinades that are free from artificial preservatives, additives, and excessive sodium. Manufacturers are responding by developing clean-label and organic variants of Cuban Mojo Marinade, using high-quality natural ingredients and transparent labeling practices. This shift aligns with broader consumer preferences for wholesome, minimally processed foods, and supports the market’s expansion into premium and specialty food segments. Furthermore, the increasing awareness of the health benefits associated with garlic, citrus, and herbs—key ingredients in Mojo Marinade—is encouraging adoption among health-oriented consumers, thereby broadening the market’s appeal.

From a regional perspective, North America currently dominates the Cuban Mojo Marinade market, accounting for the largest share of global revenue in 2024. The United States, in particular, has witnessed a surge in demand due to its diverse multicultural population and the popularity of Latin American cuisine. Latin America follows closely, driven by the marinade’s deep cultural roots and traditional usage in local cuisines. Europe and Asia Pacific are emerging as promising markets, fueled by growing interest in ethnic foods, increased international travel, and the expanding presence of Cuban restaurants and specialty food retailers. The Middle East & Africa region, while still nascent, is exhibiting steady growth as urbanization and exposure to global food trends accelerate. Overall, regional dynamics are shaped by cultural preferences, culinary traditions, and evolving consumer lifestyles, all of which contribute to the vibrant and expanding global Cuban Mojo Marinade market.

    Description

Introduction: Executive functions are higher cognitive skills involved in planning, organization, decision-making, impulse control, and working memory. It is essential to have tools that allow for the accurate and reliable assessment of this construct in university students. This study aims to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Executive Functions Scale for University Students (UEF-1) in the Cuban population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which an online survey was administered to 1092 Cuban university students representing 14 of the country's 16 provinces. Descriptive analyses, confirmatory factor analyses, and Pearson correlation analyses were used to assess the psychometric properties of the scale. Results: Significant correlations were obtained between the scale factors, and the original seven-factor structure was confirmed. The scale demonstrated good internal consistency and overall reliability (α = .91, ω = .91). Conclusions: The study provided evidence that the UEF-1 is a reliable and valid tool for assessing executive functions in Cuban university students. This measure provides a comprehensive understanding of the cognitive abilities and functioning of Cuban university students, allowing for the identification of specific areas of executive functioning that may benefit from additional support or intervention.
