The global fuel energy price index stood at 158.38 index points in August 2025, up from 100 in the base year 2016. Figures decreased that month due to a fall in natural gas prices. The fuel energy index includes prices for crude oil, natural gas, coal, and propane. Supply constraints across multiple commodities The global natural gas price index surged nearly 11-fold, and the global coal price index rose almost seven-fold from summer 2020 to summer 2022. This notable escalation was largely attributed to the Russia-Ukraine war, exerting increased pressure on the global supply chain. Tariffs bring economic uncertainty With the global economy having adjusted to the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war, new uncertainty has emerged due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. If these tariffs are fully implemented, global trade could be significantly disrupted, mainly the bilateral trade between the world’s two largest economies. In 2025, import tariffs between China and the United States exceeded 130 percent on both sides, while their tariffs on imports from the rest of the world were around 10 percent. U.S. tariffs on Chinese imported goods reached a high of 134.7 percent in April of that year, while China imposed a 147.6 percent tariff on U.S. goods. Early estimates indicate that the impact of Trump’s proposed tariffs on the U.S. economy could amount to 0.4 percent of GDP, mainly driven by the reduced trade with Mexico, Canada and China.

In September 2025, one gallon of diesel cost an average of 3.75 U.S. dollars in the United States. That was an increase compared to the month prior, and higher than prices in September 2024. Impact of crude prices on motor fuel consumer prices Diesel prices are primarily determined by the cost of crude oil. In fact, crude oil regularly accounts for around 50 percent of end consumer prices of diesel. As such, supply restrictions or weak demand outlooks influence prices at the pump. The fall in diesel prices noted since the latter half of 2024 is a reflection of lower crude prices. Diesel and gasoline price development The usage of distillate fuel oil began in the 1930s, but until further development in the 1960s, diesel vehicles were mostly applied to commercial use only. In the U.S., diesel-powered cars remain a fairly small portion of the automobile market and diesel consumption is far lower than gasoline consumption. In general, gasoline also tends to be more widely available than diesel fuel and usually sells for a lower retail price. However, diesel engines have better fuel economy than gasoline engines and, as such, tend to be used for large commercial vehicles.

Natural gas prices are the highest in the residential sector. In 2024, U.S. households paid 14.59 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic feet, down from an all-time high of over 15.2 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic feet. Overall, U.S. residential natural gas prices have increased nearly tenfold since 1975. Commercial natural gas costs were second-highest, while prices in the electric power sector were the lowest, at around three U.S. dollars on average. Prices for the industrial and electric power customers tend to be close to the wholesale electricity price. The growing natural gas market U.S. natural gas consumption has increased more than any other fuel after the U.S. oil boom of the 2010s. Petroleum consumption has been more variable, and use of coal has significantly decreased. Today, natural gas is used extensively for electric power generation, with it having overtaken coal as the primary electricity generating source. This is despite coal prices being a lot less volatile and generally lower than natural gas. Future of natural gas on the global stage Natural gas is also an important energy source worldwide. It has been the second-largest source of electricity generation since the 2000s and has slowly narrowed the gap to coal, the world's main power source. In 2024, natural gas-powered turbines the world over generated 6,890 terawatt-hours of electricity.

The average price of regular gasoline in Mexico reached 23.55 Mexican pesos per liter as of December 2024, up from more than 22 pesos per liter in the previous year. For premium gasoline, average prices increased from 24.3 pesos to 25.16 pesos per liter in the same period. What defines the price of gasoline in Mexico? The North American country is highly dependent on gasoline imports in order to meet its demand. Since 2016, gasoline imports by Pemex – Mexico’s national oil corporation – have averaged at more than 400 thousand barrels per day in a regular year. With the government’s control put to an end in late 2017, prices are since controlled by the market, and in turn strongly affected by global oil prices. Nevertheless, other factors come into play, such as import tariffs, or transport and logistics costs. In fact, prices also vary across Mexico. In 2023, Guerrero was the state with the highest average gasoline price, while Tamaulipas reported the lowest figure. How does Mexico compare with the rest of Latin America? At an average of 1.4 U.S. dollars per liter, Mexico had one of the highest prices in the region as of June 2023. This figure was above the average gasoline price reported in Latin America at the time. The country's gasoline purchasing power decreased in recent years. In 2023, the average Mexican salary could afford approximately 499 liters of gasoline.
