    Description

    The aim of this paper is to investigate the re-use of research data deposited in digital data archive in the social sciences. The study examines the quantity, type, and purpose of data downloads by analyzing enriched user log data collected from Swiss data archive. The findings show that quantitative datasets are downloaded increasingly from the digital archive and that downloads focus heavily on a small share of the datasets. The most frequently downloaded datasets are survey datasets collected by research organizations offering possibilities for longitudinal studies. Users typically download only one dataset, but a group of heavy downloaders form a remarkable share of all downloads. The main user group downloading data from the archive are students who use the data in their studies. Furthermore, datasets downloaded for research purposes often, but not always, serve to be used in scholarly publications. Enriched log data from data archives offer an interesting macro level perspective on the use and users of the services and help understanding the increasing role of repositories in the social sciences. The study provides insights into the potential of collecting and using log data for studying and evaluating data archive use.

    We provide instructions, codes and datasets for replicating the article by Kim, Lee and McCulloch (2024), "A Topic-based Segmentation Model for Identifying Segment-Level Drivers of Star Ratings from Unstructured Text Reviews." This repository provides a user-friendly R package for any researchers or practitioners to apply A Topic-based Segmentation Model with Unstructured Texts (latent class regression with group variable selection) to their datasets. First, we provide a R code to replicate the illustrative simulation study: see file 1. Second, we provide the user-friendly R package with a very simple example code to help apply the model to real-world datasets: see file 2, Package_MixtureRegression_GroupVariableSelection.R and Dendrogram.R. Third, we provide a set of codes and instructions to replicate the empirical studies of customer-level segmentation and restaurant-level segmentation with Yelp reviews data: see files 3-a, 3-b, 4-a, 4-b.     This individual-application-level dataset includes records of all applications for registered trademarks in Canada since approximately 1980, and of many preserved applications and registrations dating back to the beginning of Canada’s trademark registry in 1865, totaling over 1.6 million application records. It includes comprehensive bibliographic and lifecycle data; trademark characteristics; goods and services claims; identification of applicants, attorneys, and other interested parties (including address data); detailed prosecution history event data; and data on application, registration, and use claims in countries other than Canada. The dataset has been constructed from public records made available by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Both the dataset and the code used to build and analyze it are presented for public use on open-access terms.

    Details of Repository Contents:

    This repository includes a number of .zip archives which expand into folders containing either scripts for construction and analysis of the dataset or data files comprising the dataset itself. These folders are as follows:

    • /csv: contains the .csv versions of the data files
    • /do: contains Stata do-files used to convert the .csv files to .dta format and perform the statistical analyses set forth in the paper reporting this dataset
    • /dta: contains the .dta versions of the data files
    • /py: contains the python scripts used to download CIPO’s historical trademarks data via SFTP and generate the .csv data files

    If users wish to construct rather than download the datafiles, the first script that they should run is /py/sftp_secure.py. This script will prompt the user to enter their IP Horizons SFTP credentials; these can be obtained by registering with CIPO at https://ised-isde.survey-sondage.ca/f/s.aspx?s=59f3b3a4-2fb5-49a4-b064-645a5e3a752d&lang=EN&ds=SFTP. The script will also prompt the user to identify a target directory for the data downloads. Because the data archives are quite large, users are advised to create a target directory in advance and ensure they have at least 70GB of available storage on the media in which the directory is located.

    The sftp_secure.py script will generate a new subfolder in the user’s target directory called /XML_raw. Users should note the full path of this directory, which they will be prompted to provide when running the remaining python scripts. Each of the remaining scripts, the filenames of which begin with “iterparse”, corresponds to one of the data files in the dataset, as indicated in the script’s filename. After running one of these scripts, the user’s target directory should include a /csv subdirectory containing the data file corresponding to the script; after running all the iterparse scripts the user’s /csv directory should be identical to the /csv directory in this repository. Users are invited to modify these scripts as they see fit, subject to the terms of the licenses set forth above.

    With respect to the Stata do-files, only one of them is relevant to construction of the dataset itself. This is /do/CA_TM_csv_cleanup.do, which converts the .csv versions of the data files to .dta format, and uses Stata’s labeling functionality to reduce the size of the resulting files while preserving information. The other do-files generate the analyses and graphics presented in the paper describing the dataset (Jeremy N. Sheff, The Canada Trademarks Dataset, 18 J. Empirical Leg. Studies (forthcoming 2021)), available at https://papers.ssrn.com/abstract=3782655). These do-files are also licensed for reuse subject to the terms of the CC-BY-4.0 license, and users are invited to adapt the scripts to their needs.

    The python and Stata scripts included in this repository are separately maintained and updated on Github at https://github.com/jnsheff/CanadaTM.

    This repository also includes a copy of the current version of CIPO's data dictionary for its historical XML trademarks archive as of the date of construction of this dataset.

    Market basket analysis with Apriori algorithm

    The retailer wants to target customers with suggestions on itemset that a customer is most likely to purchase .I was given dataset contains data of a retailer; the transaction data provides data around all the transactions that have happened over a period of time. Retailer will use result to grove in his industry and provide for customer suggestions on itemset, we be able increase customer engagement and improve customer experience and identify customer behavior. I will solve this problem with use Association Rules type of unsupervised learning technique that checks for the dependency of one data item on another data item.

    Introduction

    Association Rule is most used when you are planning to build association in different objects in a set. It works when you are planning to find frequent patterns in a transaction database. It can tell you what items do customers frequently buy together and it allows retailer to identify relationships between the items.

    An Example of Association Rules

    Assume there are 100 customers, 10 of them bought Computer Mouth, 9 bought Mat for Mouse and 8 bought both of them. - bought Computer Mouth => bought Mat for Mouse - support = P(Mouth & Mat) = 8/100 = 0.08 - confidence = support/P(Mat for Mouse) = 0.08/0.09 = 0.89 - lift = confidence/P(Computer Mouth) = 0.89/0.10 = 8.9 This just simple example. In practice, a rule needs the support of several hundred transactions, before it can be considered statistically significant, and datasets often contain thousands or millions of transactions.

    • knitr - Dynamic Report generation in R.
    • magrittr- Provides a mechanism for chaining commands with a new forward-pipe operator, %>%. This operator will forward a value, or the result of an expression, into the next function call/expression. There is flexible support for the type of right-hand side expressions.
    • dplyr - A fast, consistent tool for working with data frame like objects, both in memory and out of memory.
    • tidyverse - This package is designed to make it easy to install and load multiple 'tidyverse' packages in a single step.

    GapMaps Foot Traffic Data uses location data on mobile phones sourced by Azira which is collected from smartphone apps when the users have given their permission to track their location. It can shed light on consumer visitation patterns (“where from” and “where to”), frequency of visits, profiles of consumers and much more.

    Businesses can utilise foot traffic data to answer key questions including: - What is the demographic profile of customers visiting my locations? - What is my primary catchment?     Azira have created robust screening methods to evaluate the quality of Foot Traffic data collected from multiple sources to ensure that their data lake contains only the highest-quality mobile location data.

    This includes partnering with trusted location SDK providers that get proper end user consent to track their location when they download an application, can detect device movement/visits and use GPS to determine location co-ordinates.

    Data received from partners is put through Azira's data quality algorithm discarding data points that receive a low quality score.

    Use cases in Europe will be considered on a case to case basis.

    1.Introduction

    Sales data collection is a crucial aspect of any manufacturing industry as it provides valuable insights about the performance of products, customer behaviour, and market trends. By gathering and analysing this data, manufacturers can make informed decisions about product development, pricing, and marketing strategies in Internet of Things (IoT) business environments like the dairy supply chain.

    One of the most important benefits of the sales data collection process is that it allows manufacturers to identify their most successful products and target their efforts towards those areas. For example, if a manufacturer could notice that a particular product is selling well in a certain region, this information could be utilised to develop new products, optimise the supply chain or improve existing ones to meet the changing needs of customers.

    This dataset includes information about 7 of MEVGAL’s products [1]. According to the above information the data published will help researchers to understand the dynamics of the dairy market and its consumption patterns, which is creating the fertile ground for synergies between academia and industry and eventually help the industry in making informed decisions regarding product development, pricing and market strategies in the IoT playground. The use of this dataset could also aim to understand the impact of various external factors on the dairy market such as the economic, environmental, and technological factors. It could help in understanding the current state of the dairy industry and identifying potential opportunities for growth and development.

    3. Dataset Modalities

    The dataset includes data regarding the daily sales of a series of dairy product codes offered by MEVGAL. In particular, the dataset includes information gathered by the logistics division and agencies within the industrial infrastructures overseeing the production of each product code. The products included in this dataset represent the daily sales and logistics of a variety of yogurt-based stock. Each of the different files include the logistics for that product on a daily basis for three years, from 2020 to 2022.

    3.1 Data Collection

    The process of building this dataset involves several steps to ensure that the data is accurate, comprehensive and relevant.

    The first step is to determine the specific data that is needed to support the business objectives of the industry, i.e., in this publication’s case the daily sales data.

    Once the data requirements have been identified, the next step is to implement an effective sales data collection method. In MEVGAL’s case this is conducted through direct communication and reports generated each day by representatives & selling points.

    It is also important for MEVGAL to ensure that the data collection process conducted is in an ethical and compliant manner, adhering to data privacy laws and regulation. The industry also has a data management plan in place to ensure that the data is securely stored and protected from unauthorised access.

    The published dataset is consisted of 13 features providing information about the date and the number of products that have been sold. Finally, the dataset was anonymised in consideration to the privacy requirement of the data owner (MEVGAL).

    Description

    The aim of this paper is to investigate the re-use of research data deposited in digital data archive in the social sciences. The study examines the quantity, type, and purpose of data downloads by analyzing enriched user log data collected from Swiss data archive. The findings show that quantitative datasets are downloaded increasingly from the digital archive and that downloads focus heavily on a small share of the datasets. The most frequently downloaded datasets are survey datasets collected by research organizations offering possibilities for longitudinal studies. Users typically download only one dataset, but a group of heavy downloaders form a remarkable share of all downloads. The main user group downloading data from the archive are students who use the data in their studies. Furthermore, datasets downloaded for research purposes often, but not always, serve to be used in scholarly publications. Enriched log data from data archives offer an interesting macro level perspective on the use and users of the services and help understanding the increasing role of repositories in the social sciences. The study provides insights into the potential of collecting and using log data for studying and evaluating data archive use.
