Between the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2024, the number of data compromise cases in the United States increased significantly. The highest number of data compromises was recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023, with 1,089 cases. However, the number of recorded cases fell to 841 in the first quarter of 2024. In the fourth quarter of 2022, more than 253 million individuals were affected by data compromise incidents. By the first quarter of 2024, this number decreased to around 28.5 million.

The company first reported about one billion exposed records, then later, in 2017, came up with an updated number of leaked records, which was three billion. In March 2018, the third biggest data breach happened, involving India’s national identification database Aadhaar. As a result of this incident, over 1.1 billion records were exposed.

A November 2022 survey of companies in the United Kingdom (UK) found that the share of organizations having experienced ransomware attacks in the past year was 74.7 percent. This is an uptick from 73 percent in the year prior.
