The annual school census data return is mandatory for schools to complete.

Table shows numbers of all Schools and Pupils by Type of School.

School types included in this publication are State-Funded Primary, Secondary and Special schools, Independent schools, Pupil Referral Units, and Alternative Provision.

These data show the percentage of pupils at state funded schools who live more than 2 miles from school (for those aged under 8) or 3 miles from school (for those aged over 8), 2018.

Warning: These data are taken from analysis used to create the GLA London Schools Atlas which is based on data from the DfE National Pupil Database. These rates are taken from the variable 'SC_Pupil.DistCurrSch - Distance in miles from pupil postcode to current school'. This is not exactly the same as the nearest walking distance used for eligibility for local authority funding for free travel to school.

Data presented here is an extract of data published by The Scottish Government in March 2014. The data shows School contact details as at September 2013 including school roll, FTE teacher numbers, ethnic group proportions and denomination. The data also includes the proportion of pupils who live in the 20% most deprived data-zones in Scotland. The address and contact details have been sourced from an Openings and Closings exercise that took place in June 2013. The data has been filtered to provide contact details for schools in the Glasgow local authority area only. This Intelligence Unit update (Update 04-2013) uses Department for Education (DfE) data sources to examine the following:

1. Cross border mobility of primary school age children by residence;
2. Cross border mobility of primary school age children by school location;
3. Comparison of DfE estimates with ONS 2011 Census-based data; and
4. Estimates of the number of pupils per borough attending independent school.

This dataset is published as Open Data and replaces any previously published dataset.Information about Scottish schools are updated by the Scottish Government annually for the purposes of monitoring overall performance, equality and individual policies. This dataset provides the current geocoded location, contact address, roll numbers, teacher numbers, denomination, and proportion of pupils from minority and ethnic groups for each primary, secondary and special school in Scotland. Until 2019, these updates were reflective of the previous September. School level revenue balances for all local authority maintained schools by local authority.

These tatistics describing the total revenue balances (showing both committed and uncommitted revenue balances) and also the total revenue balances as a proportion of the total revenue income for LA maintained schools.

A schools total revenue income for the year includes all revenue funding available to the year as well as any additional income generated by the school. This does not include any revenue balances carried forward from previous years.

Please note that although figures are shown here for committed and uncommitted balances there is considerable variation in how these are defined at local level meaning that at national level this comparison is not consistent or meaningful. Great caution should therefore be used in interpreting these figures.

The tables form part of annual series of school balances statistics which have been published on the Department's Every Child Matters website.

In 2023/24 there were 20,739 primary schools in the United Kingdom, a slight decrease when compared with the previous academic year. Since 2010/11 the overall number of primary schools in the UK has fallen by approximately 542 schools.

The Great Britain Historical Database has been assembled as part of the ongoing Great Britain Historical GIS Project. The project aims to trace the emergence of the north-south divide in Britain and to provide a synoptic view of the human geography of Britain at sub-county scales. Further information about the project is available on A Vision of Britain webpages, where users can browse the database's documentation system online.

Although these data come from the reports of the 1851 Census, they result not from the main household enumeration but from a separate survey of school attendance conducted on 31st March 1851. While modern census education statistics, from 1951 onwards, are concerned mainly with educational attainment, measured by either level of qualification achieved or age at termination of education, the 1851 data are concerned mainly with how schools were funded, and in particular the role of different religious denominations, which were very finely categorised. The only data concerning pupils are the numbers of female and male pupils on the attendance register of each category of school, except that for Scotland there are separate counts of the actual numbers of females and males in attendance on the census day.

Department for Education did not proceed with collating and publishing Key Stage 3 Achievement and Attainment tables at school-level for 2008, as it was deemed that it would place a disproportionate burden on secondary schools.
