    Description

    The NIST/ASME Steam Properties Database is based upon the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) 1995 formulation for general and scientific use for the thermodynamic properties of water, this updated version provides water properties from the international standards over a wide range of conditions. Version 3.0 incorporates new IAPWS standards adopted in 2008 for the viscosity and for the melting and sublimation curves and in 2011 for the thermal conductivity. The thermophysical properties included in the STEAM Database are: temperature, Helmholtz energy, thermodynamic derivatives, pressure, Gibbs energy, density, fugacity, thermal conductivity, volume, isothermal compressibility, viscosity, quality, dielectric constant, enthalpy, volume expansivity, dielectric derivatives, internal energy, speed of sound, Debye-Hückel slopes, entropy, Joule-Thomson coefficient, refractive index, Cv, surface tension, Cp, Prandtl number, Kinematic viscosity, Ionization constant (pKw), Virial Coefficients, Exergy. Using a Windows® interface, the STEAM database generates tables and plots of property values at specified conditions corresponding to saturation conditions, a fixed property value (isotherm, isobar, etc.), or individual values of two independent variables. Vapor-liquid, vapor-solid, and liquid-solid saturation calculations with either temperature or pressure specified are available. The user can specify which properties to display and the units in which to enter and display data. Additional features include an interactive on-line help system, the ability to plot calculated points and a wide variety of thermodynamic diagrams, and the capability to copy and paste data to and from other applications.

    These histograms represent our calibration of conductance of a volcanic geothermal field (with a clay cap) and the observed steam flow rates. Darajat is a vapor geothermal field located in West Java, Indonesia. First production from the field was started in 1994 and additional capacity was added in 2000 and 2007 to bring the total production capacity to 271 MW from three power plants. Please refer to Rejeki et al. (2010) for geologic and modeling background. The steam flow measurements are the average production over one year for 27 different wells. Four of these wells were drilled near to or outside of the geothermal field and are characterized by production rates of < 5kg/s.     Description

    More than 80% of the total steam injection process operating costs are for the production of steam and the operation of surface and subsurface equipment. The proper design and operation of the surface equipment is of critical importance to the success of any steam injection operation. However, the published monographs on thermal recovery have attached very little importance to this aspect of thermal oil recovery; hence, a definite need exists for a comprehensive manual that places emphasis on steam injection field practices and problems. This handbook is an attempt to fulfill this need. This handbook explores the concept behind steam injection processes and discusses the information required to evaluate, design, and implement these processes in the field. The emphasis is on operational aspects and those factors that affect the technology and economics of oil recovery by steam. The first four chapters describe the screening criteria, engineering, and economics of steam injection operation as well as discussion of the steam injection fundamentals. The next four chapters begin by considering the treatment of the water used to generate steam and discuss in considerable detail the design, operation and problems of steam generations, distribution and steam quality determination. The subsurface aspects of steamflood operations are addressed in chapters 9 through 12. These include thermal well completion and cementing practices, insulated tubulars, and lifting equipment. The next two chapters are devoted to subsurface operational problems encountered with the use of steam. Briefly described in chapters 15 and 16 are the steam injection process surface production facilities, problems and practices. Chapter 17 discusses the importance of monitoring in a steam injection project. The environmental laws and issues of importance to steam injection operation are outlined in chapter 18.

    Description

    The main goal of this project was to gain an understanding of the influence of controllable, operating practices and of reservoir parameters on the steam drive. The steam drive, because the chief phenomena of fluid flow and heat flow obey the same laws of diffusion, can be physically scaled. The validity of the results of the scaled models is evidenced by the correspondence of the results with those reported in field operations. In order to conserve on resources, this report is limited to a summary statement of the findings and conclusions of the overall project with separate chapters devoted to an account of specific tasks which came to fruition during the latter part of the project. Summary of results are presented for the following projects: gravitational instability of a steam drive; roles of oil viscosity and steam temperature on the production of crude oil when the steam flow is stratified; extension of the steam drive to tars and bitumens; occurrence of the optimum steam injection rate; emulsification and oil productivity; role of reservoir thickness; cyclic injection of steam in a steam drive; high gravity crudes; partial substitution of inert gas for steam. Two projects completed and described in detail are: effect of oil viscosity on reservoir thickness on the steam drive; and anticipated effect of diurnal injection on steam efficiency.
