    Consumer packaged goods

    The consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry is one of the largest and most successful industries in North America. During the last several decades, this industry experienced remarkable growth in both revenue and shareholder returns, fueled by the expansion of emerging-market economies and the subsequent increase in global consumption. The last few years, however, saw a decline in people’s disposable incomes, as well as a general change in consumer attitudes. Nevertheless, CPG sales in the United States constantly grew over the past five years. Sales figures were estimated to exceed *** billion U.S. dollars by 2016. Consumer packaged goods include commodities such as food and drinks, clothing and footwear, tobacco and cleaning products. CPGs are consumable items which need frequent replacing, unlike automobiles or furniture.

    In 2014, U.S. consumers spent approximately *** billion U.S. dollars on consumer packaged goods, with Baby Boomers and Senior citizens accounting for more than half of the country’s CPG expenditure. Grocery stores were the most popular CPG distribution channel, followed by drugstores and mass merchandisers and/or supermarkets. That year, ** percent of U.S. households had bought consumer packaged goods from grocery stores.

    CPG companies employ different marketing strategies to boost revenues. For instance, some ** billion CPG coupons were redeemed in the United States from 2007 to 2014. As a result, American consumers were able to save some three billion U.S. dollars on consumer packaged goods annually.

    IRI (Information Resources, Inc.) has just released an extensive set of data for academic use. This is 5 [now updated to 6] years of store scanner data and consumer panel data for 30 large consumer packaged goods categories. TNS is providing advertising data on two categories. This data covers stores in 49 markets for store level data and 2 markets for consumer panel data. This is such a large data set (over 50 gigabytes) that we are delivering it on a USB drive. More information about this data set can found at the IRI web site. http://us.infores.com/academic This site contains a high level description of the data set (Bronnenberg, Kruger and Mela, 2008, published in the July-August issue of Marketing Science), and a document containing terms of use for the dataset. We've set up a Google Groups site to support the data set. This group is available to those who've signed the terms of use and received the data set. This is the first database submission that Marketing Science has accepted.

    Context

    Nielsen receives transaction level scanning data (POS Data) from its partner stores on a regular basis. Stores sharing POS data include bigger format store types such as supermarkets, hypermarkets as well as smaller traditional trade grocery stores (Kirana stores), medical stores etc. using a POS machine.

    While in a bigger format store, all items for all transactions are scanned using a POS machine, smaller and more localized shops do not have a 100% compliance rate in terms of scanning and inputting information into the POS machine for all transactions.

    A transaction involving a single packet of chips or a single piece of candy may not be scanned and recorded to spare customer the inconvenience or during rush hours when the store is crowded with customers.

    Thus, the data received from such stores is often incomplete and lacks complete information of all transactions completed within a day.

    Additionally, apart from incomplete transaction data in a day, it is observed that certain stores do not share data for all active days. Stores share data ranging from 2 to 28 days in a month. While it is possible to impute/extrapolate data for 2 days of a month using 28 days of actual historical data, the vice versa is not recommended.

    Nielsen encourages you to create a model which can help impute/extrapolate data to fill in the missing data gaps in the store level POS data currently received.
