    Description

The Cline Center Global News Index is a searchable database of textual features extracted from millions of news stories, specifically designed to provide comprehensive coverage of events around the world. In addition to searching documents for keywords, users can query metadata and features such as named entities extracted using Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods and variables that measure sentiment and emotional valence. Archer is a web application purpose-built by the Cline Center to enable researchers to access data from the Global News Index. Archer provides a user-friendly interface for querying the Global News Index (with the back-end indexing still handled by Solr). By default, queries are built using icons and drop-down menus. More technically-savvy users can use Lucene/Solr query syntax via a ‘raw query’ option. Archer allows users to save and iterate on their queries, and to visualize faceted query results, which can be helpful for users as they refine their queries. Additional Resources: - Access to Archer and the Global News Index is limited to account-holders. If you are interested in signing up for an account, please fill out the Archer Access Request Form so we can determine if you are eligible for access or not. - Current users who would like to provide feedback, such as reporting a bug or requesting a feature, can fill out the Archer User Feedback Form. - The Cline Center sends out periodic email newsletters to the Archer Users Group. Please fill out this form to subscribe to it. Description

This data release is the update of the U.S. Geological Survey - ScienceBase data release by Bera and Over (2017), with the processed data through September 30, 2017. The primary data for each year is downloaded from the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) (Argonne National Laboratory, 2017) and is processed following the guidelines documented in Over and others (2010). Daily potential evapotranspiration (PET) in thousandths of an inch is computed from average daily air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit (°F), average daily dewpoint temperature in degrees Fahrenheit (°F), daily total wind movement in miles (mi), and daily total solar radiation in Langleys per day (Lg/d) and disaggregated to hourly PET in thousandths of an inch using the Fortran program LXPET (Murphy, 2005). Missing and apparently erroneous data values were replaced with adjusted values from nearby stations used as “backup”. Temporal variations in the statistical properties of the data resulting from changes in measurement and data storage methodologies were adjusted to match the statistical properties resulting from the data collection procedures that have been in place since January 1, 1989 (Over and others, 2010). The adjustments were computed based on the regressions between the primary data series from ANL and the backup series using data obtained during common periods; the statistical properties of the regressions were used to assign estimated standard errors to values that were adjusted or filled from other series. Each hourly value is assigned a corresponding data source flag that indicates the source of the value and its transformations. The Illinois Climate Network (Water and Atmospheric Resources Monitoring Program, 2015) station at St. Charles, Illinois is used as "backup" for the air temperature, solar radiation and wind speed data. Midwestern Regional Climate Center (Midwestern Regional Climate Center, 2017) station at Chicago O'Hare International Airport is used as "backup" for the dewpoint temperature and wind speed data. Each data source flag is of the form "xyz" that allows the user to determine its source and the methods used to process the data (Over and others, 2010). Description

LMOS_Ground_IEPA_Data_1 is the Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS) ground site data collected at the Illinois EPA (IEPA) ground site during the LMOS field campaign. This product is a result of a joint effort across multiple agencies, including NASA, NOAA, the EPA, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), National Science Foundation (NSF), Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium (LADCO) and its member states, and several research groups at universities. Data collection is complete.Elevated spring and summertime ozone levels remain a challenge along the coast of Lake Michigan, with a number of monitors exceeding the 2015 National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone. The production of ozone over Lake Michigan, combined with onshore daytime “lake breeze” airflow is believed to increase ozone concentrations at locations within a few kilometers off shore. This observed lake-shore gradient motivated the Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS). Conducted from May through June 2017, the goal of LMOS was to better understand ozone formation and transport around Lake Michigan; in particular, why ozone concentrations are generally highest along the lakeshore and drop off sharply inland and why ozone concentrations peak in rural areas far from major emission sources. LMOS was a collaborative, multi-agency field study that provided extensive observational air quality and meteorology datasets through a combination of airborne, ship, mobile laboratories, and fixed ground-based observational platforms. Chemical transport models (CTMs) and meteorological forecast tools assisted in planning for day-to-day measurement strategies. The long term goals of the LMOS field study were to improve modeled ozone forecasts for this region, better understand ozone formation and transport around Lake Michigan, provide a better understanding of the lakeshore gradient in ozone concentrations (which could influence how the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) addresses future regional ozone issues), and provide improved knowledge of how emissions influence ozone formation in the region.

    Description

Please see the individual layer/table below to access the detailed metadata. In order to support science-based water resource management, a systematic effort was undertaken to characterize the nature and function of the hydrogeology in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Jo Daviess County is a karst area. Karst is a geologically and hydrologically integrated or interconnected and self-organizing network of landforms and subsurface large-scale, secondary porosity created by a combination of fractured carbonate bedrock, the movement of water into and through the rock body as part of the hydrologic cycle, and physical and chemical weathering (Panno, S.V. et al, 2017). Springs, cover-collapse sinkholes, crevices, and caves are among the defining features of a karst terrain; each of these features is found in Jo Daviess County. Examples of these features have been located in the field and using other remotely-sensed data and characterized by scientists from the Illinois State Geological and Water Surveys (Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). For this project, groundwater samples were collected from springs and wells and analyzed for inorganic chemistry, dissolved organic carbon, stable isotopes of water, and tritium. The project objective was to initiate a karst feature database, to collect water samples from springs to determine groundwater background concentrations of major anions, cations, and field parameters, and to then characterize and group the different populations of groundwater within Jo Daviess County. This project was supported by Grant Awards F16AP00772 and F18AC00961, from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to the League of Women Voters of Illinois Education Fund as well as support from the Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois. In addition to reports created for each sampling location (containing data, photographs and interpretation) and submitted to USFWS as grantee performance reports for Grant Award F16AP00772, the publication cited below references the data and provides interpretation:Panno, S.V., W.R. Description

The Cline Center Historical Phoenix Event Data covers the period 1945-2019 and includes 8.2 million events extracted from 21.2 million news stories. This data was produced using the state-of-the-art PETRARCH-2 software to analyze content from the New York Times (1945-2018), the BBC Monitoring's Summary of World Broadcasts (1979-2019), the Wall Street Journal (1945-2005), and the Central Intelligence Agency’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service (1995-2004). It documents the agents, locations, and issues at stake in a wide variety of conflict, cooperation and communicative events in the Conflict and Mediation Event Observations (CAMEO) ontology. The Cline Center produced these data with the generous support of Linowes Fellow and Faculty Affiliate Prof. Dov Cohen and help from our academic and private sector collaborators in the Open Event Data Alliance (OEDA). For details on the CAMEO framework, see: Schrodt, Philip A., Omür Yilmaz, Deborah J. Gerner, and Dennis Hermreck. "The CAMEO (conflict and mediation event observations) actor coding framework."
