    Description

A resilience survey instrument was created by Energize Colorado that assessed the social and operational performance of small businesses, based on key measures of business health and success found in the scientific literature. The survey was sent electronically to approximately 14,000 small business owners from Energize Colorado’s database. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and statistical tests measuring the correlation between the SBRI, demographics, and overall business performance, in order to understand predictors of small business resilience.

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

The Business Structure Database (BSD) contains a small number of variables for almost all business organisations in the UK. The BSD is derived primarily from the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR), which is a live register of data collected by HM Revenue and Customs via VAT and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) records. The IDBR data are complimented with data from ONS business surveys. If a business is liable for VAT (turnover exceeds the VAT threshold) and/or has at least one member of staff registered for the PAYE tax collection system, then the business will appear on the IDBR (and hence in the BSD). In 2004 it was estimated that the businesses listed on the IDBR accounted for almost 99 per cent of economic activity in the UK. Only very small businesses, such as the self-employed were not found on the IDBR.

The IDBR is frequently updated, and contains confidential information that cannot be accessed by non-civil servants without special permission. However, the ONS Virtual Micro-data Laboratory (VML) created and developed the BSD, which is a 'snapshot' in time of the IDBR, in order to provide a version of the IDBR for research use, taking full account of changes in ownership and restructuring of businesses. The 'snapshot' is taken around April, and the captured point-in-time data are supplied to the VML by the following September. The reporting period is generally the financial year. For example, the 2000 BSD file is produced in September 2000, using data captured from the IDBR in April 2000. The data will reflect the financial year of April 1999 to March 2000. However, the ONS may, during this time, update the IDBR with data on companies from its own business surveys, such as the Annual Business Survey (SN 7451).

The data are divided into 'enterprises' and 'local units'. An enterprise is the overall business organisation. A local unit is a 'plant', such as a factory, shop, branch, etc. In some cases, an enterprise will only have one local unit, and in other cases (such as a bank or supermarket), an enterprise will own many local units.

For each company, data are available on employment, turnover, foreign ownership, and industrial activity based on Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)92, SIC 2003 or SIC 2007. Year of 'birth' (company start-up date) and 'death' (termination date) are also included, as well as postcodes for both enterprises and their local units. Previously only pseudo-anonymised postcodes were available but now all postcodes are real.

The ONS is continually developing the BSD, and so researchers are strongly recommended to read all documentation pertaining to this dataset before using the data.

    Linking to Other Business Studies
These data contain IDBR reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research.

    Latest Edition Information
For the sixteenth edition (March 2024), data files and a variable catalogue document for 2023 have been added.

    Main Topics:

The following variables are available for enterprises and local units:
    • employment (and employees)
    • turnover
    • Standard Industrial Classification (1992, 2003 and 2007 classifications are available)
    • legal status (e.g. sole proprietor, partnership, public corporation, non-profit organisation etc)
    • foreign ownership
    • birth (company start date)
    • death (termination date of trading)
    • various geographical variables
'Employment' includes business owners, whereas 'employees' measures the number of staff, excluding owners.

Observations for enterprises also include a variable for ownership if the enterprise is part of a large group of companies.

Local units have an additional ‘death code’ variable, which serves as an indicator as to why the plant closed (e.g. as a result of a merger). It should also be noted that there is no turnover information for individual plants. This is because the ONS does not collect financial information at the plant level, which is notoriously difficult, especially for manufacturing plants where often no financial transactions are processed.

The birth and death variables are particularly useful for research, although it should be noted that for businesses that began trading before 1973, their birth date will be set to 1973. This is the year that VAT was introduced in the UK, and hence the first point in time for VAT registration for these companies. Companies that began trading since 1973 have their ‘real’ date of birth listed.

    Description

The sample considered for the study consisted of founders/owners and managers of small businesses operating in the various industrial sectors in South Africa. Data were collected from this sample set using self-administered questionnaires. Approval was secured for the use of a database comprising South African small businesses drawn from various small business hubs, national small business directories, and Government small business support agencies. The choice of quantitative methodology is consistent with the objectivist ontological and positivist epistemological disposition of the current study. The study made use of survey methods to facilitate the generation of answers to research problems and questions, the determination of what research objectives could be met, as well as the trends shaping the phenomena being studied. Effectuation was measured using a 13-item scale developed and validated by Chandler et al. (2011). Small business performance was measured according to a multi-dimensional and subjective scale developed in the study by Zahra et al. (2002).

    Description
The British Business Census of Entrepreneurs, 1851-1911 (BBCE) is a quality-controlled, consistent, and integrated database that is as complete as feasible for all British business proprietors in the period 1851-1911, and aligned to modern definitions used up to the 2011 census. It covers England and Wales for 1851-1911, and Scotland for 1851-1901. It includes as fully as possible all: Employers (those who employed others); Sole proprietor own account self-employed (those who employed no-one else); and Directors of corporations (Limited Companies). BBCE mainly derives from the Integrated Census Microdata (I-CeM) Project (see SN 7856), to which BBCE is linked via individual RecID; but BBCE also infills missing or truncated data in I-CeM using census transcripts from S&N and coding from CEBs, and also provides entrepreneur data for 1871. BBCE makes available employment status codes for all years 1851-1911, occupational coding to main occupation and portfolios, coding of partnerships and directors, and extracts workforce size where given by employers over 1851-81, and for farmers the acreage occupied. There is data linkage and coding of individuals identifiable in the census who were directors of corporations, together with information on their companies.

Further information may be found on the BBCE project website.

Publications, working papers and presentations are also regularly updated at the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure Drivers of entrepreneurship and small business project website.

The original data producers and copyright holders of I-CeM are Professors K. Schurer and E.J. Higgs, and the original data producer and copyright holder for S&N is Nigel Bayley.

    Description

The focus of this project was insider fraud -- crimes committed by the owners and operators of insurance companies that were established for the purposes of defrauding businesses and employees. The quantitative data for this collection were taken from a database maintained by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), an organization that represents state insurance departments collectively and acts as a clearinghouse for information obtained from individual departments. Created in 1988, the Regulatory Information Retrieval System (RIRS) database contains information on actions taken by state insurance departments against individuals and firms, including cease and desist orders, license revocations, fines, and penalties imposed. Data available for this project include a total of 123 actions taken against firms labeled as Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangements or Multiple Employer Trusts (MEWA/MET) in the RIRS database. Variables available in this data collection include the date action was taken, state where action was taken, dollar amount of the penalty imposed in the action, and disposition for action taken.

    Description

In January 2004, a consortium of public and private sector organisations commissioned Warwick Business School to carry out the United Kingdom Survey of Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises' (SME) Finances, 2004. This was the first representative survey of SMEs to offer a close analysis of businesses with fewer than 250 employees, their main owners and their access to external finance. A second survey was conducted in 2008, where business owners were interviewed by telephone about the finances they have used or applied for in the last three years, their financial relationships, the characteristics of the business and personal details.

In 2007, another consortium of UK public sector bodies, small business representative organisations and finance providers agreed to sponsor a similar survey to the 2004 survey, conducted by the Centre for Business Research based at the University of Cambridge. This study is held at the UKDA under SN 6049, with the title United Kingdom Survey of Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises' Finances, 2007. It aimed to compile another benchmark and to identify any changes or trends that had emerged since 2004, but made a number of changes to the 2004 questionnaire, so that it is not a direct member of the UKSMEF series, but stands alongside it as a separate cross-sectional survey. The UKSMEF 2008 survey was conducted by the same Principal Investigator as the 2004 survey, based at Warwick Business School, and the 2008 report provides direct comparison between the 2004 and 2008 surveys.
The aims of the 2009 survey were to:

    • provide benchmarking data on the availability of credit to SMEs and the types of finance used
    • collect information on the relationship between SMEs and their providers of finance
    • develop a general purpose micro database for quantitative research on business finance (offering, for example, scope for comparisons with the US Survey of Small Business Finances)
The 2009 sample consisted of 1,250 follow up interviews with businesses interviewed for the 2008 survey. Telephone interviews were conducted by IFF Research Ltd during autumn 2009. These interviews focused on the cost and availability of overdrafts and term loans to businesses in the previous year due to policy makers concerns about the affect of the Credit Crisis on bank lending to SMEs. The data can be used for panel data analysis, in conjunction with UKSMEFs 2004 and 2008, or for standalone cross-sectional analysis. A set of population weights is included in the dataset so that this analysis can be weighted to the UK SME population. These weights were calculated using statistics provided by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills Enterprise Directorate - see Business population estimates, formerly 'SME Statistics'.

Further information may be found on the ESRC UK Survey of SME Finances 2009 Follow On Study award webpage.

NEW!: Use the new Business Account Number lookup tool.

SUMMARY This dataset includes the locations of businesses that pay taxes to the City and County of San Francisco. Each registered business may have multiple locations and each location is a single row. The Treasurer & Tax Collector’s Office collects this data through business registration applications, account update/closure forms, and taxpayer filings. Business locations marked as “Administratively Closed” have not filed or communicated with TTX for 3 years, or were marked as closed following a notification from another City and County Department.

The data is collected to help enforce the Business and Tax Regulations Code including, but not limited to: Article 6, Article 12, Article 12-A, and Article 12-A-1. http://sftreasurer.org/registration.

    HOW TO USE THIS DATASET

  19. System migration in 2014: When the City transitioned to a new system in 2014, only active business accounts were migrated. As a result, any businesses that had already closed by that point were not included in the current dataset.
  20. 2018 account cleanup: In 2018, TTX did a major cleanup of dormant and unresponsive accounts and closed approximately 40,000 inactive businesses.

    Description

This dataset is an output of a desk audit by Monash University Researcher, Tui McKeown, working with Ken Phillips, executive director of Independent Contractors Australia (ICA), which funded the project. Self-employed people make up 20% of the workforce and are internally recognised as a powerful entrepreneurial and consumer force. However, what is “known” about them is mostly based on assumptions rather than facts. The aims of the project were twofold. The first was to clearly identify and summarise the key features of three of the largest databases and research resources available within Australia for profiling this complex sector. The second is to see what synthesis can be achieved between these three sources as resources and so develop a deeper understanding of this sector. Source data included the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2008 Forms of Employment Survey and the 2009 Australian Labour Market report; four reports by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) into the micro business sector; and from Roy Morgan Research, a 2009 report into the self employed in Australia and the Roy Morgan Research Asteroid database which collected information between January 1999 and December 2008. All data is published in the full report (A desk audit into the data and research on micro-business profiling in Australia) that is available on the ICA website. It provides grounded and accurate information for policy frameworks and will assist those who need to communicate with self-employed people, as well as future PhD students and researchers.

    What is this directory for?

Mayor Michelle Wu is committed to creating equal opportunities for businesses of all kinds in Boston. Through the business certification process, the City identifies businesses that are owned by women, minorities, veterans as well as those that are small or local. Once a business is certified with our office, they are included in any vendor outreach efforts for City contracting opportunities and are also connected to resources offered inside and outside of the City.

In order to provide access to more minority-owned and woman-owned businesses, small and small local businesses, and veteran and service disabled veteran-owned small businesses, the City of Boston Directory of certified businesses is now available on Analyze Boston.

If you think you might be eligible for certification, visit our website and apply today

If you have questions about obtaining certification, please contact stacey.williams@boston.gov
