Accessible Recreation Destinations (ARDs) are recreation areas located on lands managed by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), such as trailheads and boating, camping, fishing, and picnic areas, from which all pedestrians can access wheelchair accessible features.DEC welcomes all visitors to explore state lands, and we are committed to providing an ever-increasing range of accessible outdoor recreation opportunities. See Accessible Recreation Destinations web page for more information on the information provided in this data layer and to explore the range of wheelchair accessible opportunities statewide via an interactive online map displaying the data in this layer.Accessible Features at DEC Facilities are designed or renovated to be consistent with the U.S. Access Board Accessibility Guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) according to the requirements at the time of construction or modification.Accessible campsites at developed DEC Campgrounds are designated for use by people with mobility disabilities and offer an accessible picnic table and fireplace/ring, along with a firm, graded surface suitable for navigation of a mobility device. See Campgrounds page for more information.Accessible primitive campsites on backcountry DEC lands have a firm, graded surface suitable for navigation of a mobility device and offer an undeveloped camping experience on a no-fee, first-come, first-served basis. See Primitive Camping page for more information.Accessible boat launches, fishing platforms, and picnic and viewing areas have wheelchair accessible amenities and are accessible by an outdoor access route or accessible trail.Accessible trails have shallow grades, wide tread, and firm compact surfaces of crushed stone, boardwalk, and pavement. Trail access information including trail length, slope, width, and surface type is provided for accessible trails to help hikers select trails that match their interests and abilities.Trail grade, or slope, is described as a percent of rise over run e.g., 1 foot rise over 20 feet run is 5% slope. DEC accessible trails typically have a grade of 2-5% with a width of 3-5 feet and a firm surface of compacted stone; maximum grade of our accessible trails is 12% and minimum width is 3 feet.Outdoor features are subject to storm damage, weathering, and other factors which may result in features temporarily not meeting the standards to which they were constructed. Please check the DEC facility page before your visit for updates and to find contact information for staff who can inform you about site conditions.
