This data contains information about all the business firms in the Town of Dumfries. This including men-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned, and minority-owned businesses. This data comes from the most recent U.S. Census provided by the United States Census Bureau. This data set provides statistics about employer and nonemployer businesses from 2021 for the nation, states, counties, and metropolitan statistical areas (MSA). It includes the number of firms, revenue, number of employees, and annual payroll, broken down by industry and owner demographics including as sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.About NES-DThe Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics series (NES-D) provides information on the demographic characteristics of nonemployer businesses. The NES-D is the result of a research project by the Census Bureau to complete the picture of U.S. business ownership by demographics for the United States. Historically, the quinquennial Survey of Business Owners (SBO) provided the only comprehensive source of information on both employer and nonemployer businesses by demographic characteristics of the business owners. In 2017, the SBO was replaced by the Annual Business Survey (ABS). The ABS is an annual survey that collects demographic characteristics from employer businesses. However, the ABS excludes the collection of demographic data from nonemployer businesses. The NES-D was developed to produce similar estimates as ABS on owner demographics for nonemployer businesses. The NES-D is not a survey; rather, it leverages existing individual-level administrative records to assign demographic characteristics to the universe of nonemployer businesses. Demographic characteristics including sex, ethnicity, race, veteran status, owner age, place of birth, and U.S. citizenship are assigned to nonemployer business owners.Together, the NES-D and the ABS will continue to provide the only source of detailed and comprehensive statistics on the scope, nature and activities of all U.S. businesses by the demographic characteristics of the business owners. NES-D data will be available annually by detailed geography and industry levels, receipt-size class, and legal form of organization (LFO). Beginning with the 2019 NES-D, the data will include urban and rural classification.

The Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D): Company Summary estimates provide economic data classified by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status of nonemployer firms. The NES-D is not a survey; rather, it leverages existing administrative records to assign demographic characteristics to the universe of nonemployer businesses. The nonemployer universe is comprised of businesses with no paid employment or payroll, annual receipts of $1,000 or more ($1 or more in the construction industries), and filing IRS tax forms for sole proprietorships (Form 1040, Schedule C), partnerships (Form 1065), or corporations (the Form 1120 series). Data for all firms are also presented. These estimates are produced by combining estimates for nonemployer firms from the Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NESD) and employer firms from the Annual Business Survey (ABS).

This table includes information on business demography according to the European standard. Figures in this table are also submitted in this form to Eurostat. Information concerns the population of active enterprises, enterprise births and deaths, broken down by legal form and by the National Classification of Economic Activity 2008 (NCEA 2008, based on NACE Rev 2.0). Data also includes persons employed and employees in these enterprises.

The figures in this table are final for 2010 through 2022. The figures for 2023 are provisional. Only the data on Dissolved companies for 2023 will be adjusted.

When will new figures be released? Figures on a new reporting year (T – 2) will be published in July of the current year T.

The Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D): Characteristics of Business Owners estimates provide information on selected economic and demographic characteristics of business owners tabulated by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status of an owner. Data on enterprise births, deaths, active enterprises and survival rates across boroughs.

Data includes:

1. the most recent annual figures for enterprise births and deaths
2. a time series of the number of births and deaths of entrprises together with a percentage of births and deaths to active enterprises in a given year
3. a time series of the number of active enterprises.
4. survival rates of enterprises for up to 5 years after birth

Notes and definitions:

• The starting point for business demography is the concept of a population of active businesses in a reference year (t). These are defined as businesses that had either turnover or employment at any time during the reference period.
• A birth is identified as a business that was present in year t, but did not exist in year t-1 or t-2. Births are identified by making comparison of annual active population files and identifying those present in the latest file, but not the two previous ones.
• A death is defined as a business that was on the active file in year t, but was no longer present in the active file in t+1 and t+2. In order to provide an early estimate of deaths, an adjustment has been made to the 2007 and 2008 deaths to allow for reactivations. These figures are provisional and subject to revision.

The OECD Secretariat collects a wide range of statistics on businesses and business activity. The Structural Business Statistics by size class dataset is part of the Structural and Demographic Business Statistics (SDBS) database featuring the harmonised data collection of the OECD Statistics and Data Directorate relating to a number of key variables, such as value added, operating surplus, employment, and the number of business units.

Data are broken down to class (4-digit) level of International Standard of Industrial Classification (ISIC Revision 4), and by enterprise size class based on the number of persons employed.

Data cover OECD member and partner countries, non-OECD countries that are members of the European Statistical System who provide data to Eurostat, as well as countries participating in OECD Regional initiatives.

Directory of Economic Activities
The Directory of Economic Activities operation (DIRAE) collects information from all the establishments that carry out Economic activities in the Basque Country; provides basic structural information on the sectors of economic activity and serves as a framework of reference for the implementation of sector censuses and surveys; it also allows the analysis of the population employed in the establishments of the community. At present it does not include the activities of the households that employ domestic staff and extraterritorial bodies.

The Statistics regarding company start-ups and closures
The Statistics regarding company start-ups and closures seeks to quantify the number of companies and establishments that are created and closed over time, according to the different economic sectors, territorial spheres and other characteristics of those units, and the legal entity or its size. This demographics information is directly obtained from the Directory of Economic Activities and also provides the start-up and closure rates over time.

The 2018 edition of Woods and Poole Complete U.S. Database provides annual historical data from 1970 (some variables begin in 1990) and annual projections to 2050 of population by race, sex, and age, employment by industry, earnings of employees by industry, personal income by source, households by income bracket and retail sales by kind of business. The Complete U.S. Database contains annual data for all economic and demographic variables for all geographic areas in the Woods & Poole database (the U.S. total, and all regions, states, counties, and CBSAs). The Complete U.S. Database has following components: Demographic & Economic Desktop Data Files: There are 122 files covering demographic and economic data. The first 31 files (WP001.csv – WP031.csv) cover demographic data. The remaining files (WP032.csv – WP122.csv) cover economic data. The annual Business demography data collection covers variables which explain the characteristics and demography of the business population. The methodology allows for the production of data on enterprise births (and deaths), that is, enterprise creations (cessations) that amount to the creation (dissolution) of a combination of production factors and where no other enterprises are involved. In other words, enterprises created or closed solely as a result of e.g. restructuring, merger or break-up are not considered. The data are drawn from business registers, although some countries improve the availability of data on employment and turnover by integrating other sources.

Until 2010 reference year the harmonised data collection is carried out to satisfy the requirements for the Structural Indicators, used for monitoring progress of the Lisbon process, regarding business births, deaths and survival. Business demography also delivered the key information for policy decision-making and for the indicators to support the Europe 2020 strategy. It also provides key data for the joint OECD-Eurostat "Entrepreneurship Indicators Programme".

In summary, the collected indicators are as follows:

• Population of active enterprises
• Number of enterprise births
• Number of enterprise survivals up to five years
• Number of enterprise deaths
• Related variables on employment
• Derived indicators such as birth rates, death rates, survival rates and employment shares
• An additional set of indicators on high-growth enterprises and 'gazelles' (high-growth enterprises that are up to five years old)

Geographically EU Member States and EFTA countries are covered.

As of 1 February 2020, the United Kingdom is no longer part of the European Union. You may still find reference to aggregated data for the EU with 28 Member States (EU28) and UK data in the Business demography statistics. In particular, content created before 1 February 2020 refers to periods when the United Kingdom was a Member State, and therefore remains valid. However, the EU28 aggregates within BD domain will neither be calculated for reference period 2019 and after, nor the UK data will be revised for the available reference periods.

The methodology laid down in the Eurostat-OECD Manual on Business Demography Statistics is followed closely by most of the countries (see Country specific notes in the Annexes).

Business demography statistics provide information about the life cycle of businesses and their development over time. They also show how the economic contribution of the business economy in terms of employment develops across a number of enterprise characteristics.

The EU Member States transmit BD annually to the European Commission (Eurostat) on the basis of European legislation.

BD covers all activities of the business economy with the exception of agricultural activities and public administration. The data are provided by all EU Member States, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, some candidate and potential candidate countries.

Most of the data is collected by National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) and are drawn from business registers, although some countries improve the availability of data on employment and turnover by integrating other sources.

The annual Business demography data collection covers variables which explain the characteristics and demography of the business population. The methodology allows for the production of data on enterprise births (and deaths), that is, enterprise creations (cessations) that amount to the creation (dissolution) of a combination of production factors and where no other enterprises are involved (enterprises created or closed solely as a result of e.g. restructuring, merger or break-up are not considered).

For high-growth enterprises, the following indicators are available at EU and country level:

• Number of high-growth enterprises (growth by 10% or more);
• Number of employees of high-growth enterprises;
• Number of young high-growth enterprises (up to five years old high-growth enterprises);
• Number of employees of young high-growth enterprise.
