This API returns a search for the demographic information for a particular geography type and geography name.

Research indicates that the use of injectable drugs, like the use of other illicit drugs, varies by demographic group and geographic area. Methamphetamine use from 2002 to 2004, for example, was more prevalent in the West than in other regions of the country. Analysis of 2003 treatment admissions involving clients who injected their drugs of abuse showed that their profiles by race/ethnicity, gender, and region varied depending on the types of drugs they injected. These findings suggest that there are differences in the rates of injection drug use depending on demographic and geographic characteristics.

This dataset provides population estimate trends from 1998 to the current year for each of California’s 58 counties, further disaggregated by Detailed Analysis Units (DAUs) - the smallest geographic units historically used by the California Department of Water Resources for water planning as part of the California Water Plan. DAUs are subdivisions of Planning Areas and often align with county boundaries, although a single DAU may span multiple counties. They have traditionally supported water demand estimates based on crop and land use types.

The population estimates were developed using U.S. Bureau Census 2000, 2010 and 2020 data. Throughout the estimation process, intermediate results were reviewed and adjusted as needed, with professional judgment applied to smooth trends where appropriate.

Since the California Water Plan is retiring DAUs as its planning and analysis framework, future updates to this dataset will transition away from DAU based geography. Instead, population estimates will be provided based on other geographic units, such as the 8-digit Hydrologic Units (HUC8) defined by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Watershed Boundary Dataset.

A dashboard is available for visualizing historical population trends by county and DAU.

The Gridded Population of the World, Version 3 (GPWv3): Land and Geographic Unit Area Grids measure land areas in square kilometers and the mean Unit size (population-weighted) in square kilometers. The land area grid permits the summation of areas (net of permanent ice and water) at the same resolution as the population density, count, and urban-rural grids. The mean Unit size grids provides a quantitative surface that indicates the size of the input Unit(s) from which population count and density grids are derived..GPWv3 is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) in collaboration with Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT).

Demographic and geographic information.

The datasets presented here enable historical longitudinal studies of micro-level geographic factors in a rural setting. These types of datasets are new, as historical demography studies have generally failed to properly include the micro-level geographic factors. Our datasets describe the geography over five Swedish rural parishes and a geocoded population (at the property unit level) for this area for the time period 1813-1914. The population is a subset of the Scanian Economic Demographic Database (SEDD). The geographic information includes the following feature types: property units, wetlands, buildings, roads and railroads. The property units and wetlands are stored in object-lifeline time representations (information about creation, changes and ends of objects are recorded in time), whereas the other feature types are stored as snapshots in time. Thus, the datasets present one of the first opportunities to study historical spatio-temporal patterns at the micro-level.

The Urban Place GIS Coverage of Mexico is a vector based point Geographic Information System (GIS) coverage of 696 urban places in Mexico. Each Urban Place is geographically referenced down to one tenth of a minute. The attribute data include time-series population and selected census/geographic data items for Mexican urban places from from 1921 to 1990. The cartographic data include urban place point locations on a state boundary file of Mexico. This data set is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) in collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica Geografia e Informatica (INEGI) and the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) of Michigan.

The Socioeconomic High-resolution Rural-Urban Geographic Dataset on India (SHRUG) is a new administrative data source describing socioeconomic development in India. The first version of the SHRUG describes demographic, socioeconomic, firm and political outcomes at a high geographic resolution for the universe of Indian households and non-farm productive establishments, in both rural and urban India, from 1990-2013. The SHRUG is a platform for future collaboration and data sharing between researchers working with administrative data in India. We have created a set of consistent location identifiers for all geographic locations in India from 1990-2013, and establish a methodology to extend this classification to units from future data sources. Researchers working with geographic variation in India can thus benefit from linking to the SHRUG, and can benefit other researchers by making their data available to others through the SHRUG platform. In the accompanying paper, we describe the construction of the data and the strengths and weaknesses of administrative data like these for research on economic development. We then perform several validation exercises to show that the SHRUG is consistent with other data sources. Finally, we present an illustrative data exercise on recent trends in rural and urban development. This is an archive of a prior version of SHRUG (v1.3, or Harvard Dataverse version number 3.x). Two datasets provide geographic, land use and population data for US Counties within the contiguous US. Land area, water area, cropland area, farmland area, pastureland area and idle cropland area are given along with latitude and longitude of the county centroid and the county population. Variables in this dataset come from the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the US Census Bureau.

EOS-WEBSTER provides seven datasets which provide county-level data on agricultural management, crop production, livestock, soil properties, geography and population. These datasets were assembled during the mid-1990's to provide driving variables for an assessment of greenhouse gas production from US agriculture using the DNDC agro-ecosystem model [see, for example, Li et al. (1992), J. Geophys. Res., 97:9759-9776; Li et al. (1996) Global Biogeochem. Cycles, 10:297-306]. The data (except nitrogen fertilizer use) were all derived from publicly available, national databases. Each dataset has a separate DIF.
