    Introduction

Small Business Statistics: Small businesses are often seen as the backbone of the economy, and rightly so. They bring fresh ideas to the market and create jobs for people who may not have opportunities in larger companies. From one-person businesses to significant job creators, small businesses are crucial to the economy.

However, with 82% failing because of cash flow problems and only 50% making it to the five-year mark, it’s clear that achieving success is not easy. Here are some Small Business Statistics that can help entrepreneurs understand the market better and position their products or services for success.

    Description

Sourcing accurate and up-to-date map data across Asia and MENA has historically been difficult for retail brands looking to expand their store networks in these regions. Either the data does not exist or it isn't readily accessible or updated regularly.

GapMaps Map Data uses known population data combined with billions of mobile device location points to provide highly accurate and globally consistent demographics data across Asia and MENA at 150m x 150m grid levels in major cities and 1km grids outside of major cities.

GapMaps Map Data also includes the latest Point-of-Interest (POI) Data for leading retail brands across a range of categories including Fast Food/ QSR, Health & Fitness, Supermarket/Grocery and Cafe sectors which is updated monthly.

With this information, brands can get a detailed understanding of who lives in a catchment, where they work and their spending potential which allows you to:

    • Better understand your customers
    • Identify optimal locations to expand your retail footprint
    • Define sales territories for franchisees
    • Run targeted marketing campaigns.

GapMaps Map Data for Asia and MENA can be utilized in any GIS platform and includes the latest estimates (updated annually) on:

    1. Population (how many people live in your local catchment)
    2. Demographics (who lives within your local catchment)
    3. Worker population (how many people work within your local catchment)
    4. Consuming Class and Premium Consuming Class (who can can afford to buy goods & services beyond their basic needs and /or shop at premium retailers)
    5. Retail Spending (Food & Beverage, Grocery, Apparel, Other). How much are consumers spending on retail goods and services by category.

    Description

Overview This dataset re-shares cartographic and demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau to provide an obvious supplement to Open Environments Block Group publications. These results do not reflect any proprietary or predictive model. Rather, they extract from Census Bureau results with some proportions and aggregation rules applied. For additional support or more detail, please see the Census Bureau citations below. Cartographics refer to shapefiles shared in the Census TIGER/Line publications. Block Group areas are updated annually, with major revisions accompanying the Decennial Census at the turn of each decade. These shapes are useful for visualizing estimates as a map and relating geographies based upon geo-operations like overlapping. This data is kept in a geodatabase file format and requires the geopandas package and its supporting fiona and DAL software. Demographics are taken from popular variables in the American Community Survey (ACS) including age, race, income, education and family structure. This data simply requires csv reader software or pythons pandas package. While the demographic data has many columns, the cartographic data has a very, very large column called "geometry" storing the many-point boundaries of each shape. So, this process saves the data separately, with demographics columns in a csv file and geometry in a gpd file needed an installation of geopandas, fiona and DAL software. More details on the ACS variables selected and derivation rules applied can be found in the commentary docstrings in the source code found here: https://github.com/OpenEnvironments/blockgroupdemographics. ## Files While the demographic data has many columns, the cartographic data has a very, very large column called "geometry" storing the many-point boundaries of each shape. So, this process saves the data separately, with demographics columns in a csv file named YYYYblcokgroupdemographics.csv. The cartographic column, 'geometry', is shared as file named YYYYblockgroupdemographics-geometry.pkl. This file needs an installation of geopandas, fiona and DAL software.

    Description

The Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D): Company Summary estimates provide economic data classified by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status of nonemployer firms. The NES-D is not a survey; rather, it leverages existing administrative records to assign demographic characteristics to the universe of nonemployer businesses. The nonemployer universe is comprised of businesses with no paid employment or payroll, annual receipts of $1,000 or more ($1 or more in the construction industries), and filing IRS tax forms for sole proprietorships (Form 1040, Schedule C), partnerships (Form 1065), or corporations (the Form 1120 series). Data for all firms are also presented. These estimates are produced by combining estimates for nonemployer firms from the Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NESD) and employer firms from the Annual Business Survey (ABS).
