    Description

The Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D): Company Summary estimates provide economic data classified by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status of nonemployer firms. The NES-D is not a survey; rather, it leverages existing administrative records to assign demographic characteristics to the universe of nonemployer businesses. The nonemployer universe is comprised of businesses with no paid employment or payroll, annual receipts of $1,000 or more ($1 or more in the construction industries), and filing IRS tax forms for sole proprietorships (Form 1040, Schedule C), partnerships (Form 1065), or corporations (the Form 1120 series). Data for all firms are also presented. These estimates are produced by combining estimates for nonemployer firms from the Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NESD) and employer firms from the Annual Business Survey (ABS).

    About

These economic estimates are accredited official statistics providing an estimate of the contribution of DCMS Sectors to the UK economy, measured by the number of businesses.

    Headline findings

In March 2024, there were 590,695 businesses in the included DCMS sectors (21.7% of all UK registered businesses), a slight increase of 1.0% from March 2023. In comparison, the number of UK businesses overall in March 2024 was similar to March 2023 (-0.1%).

Of the 590,695 businesses in the included DCMS sectors in March 2024:

    • the vast majority (87.4%) fell into the micro (0 to 9) employment band, a slightly lower proportion than for UK registered businesses in general (89.1%).
    • 72.4% of businesses had a turnover of less than £250,000, a higher proportion than for UK businesses in general (66.1%).

    • 24.1% of business sites in the included DCMS sectors were located in London, a higher proportion compared to UK business sites overall (18.6%).

    Content

    These statistics cover the contributions of the following DCMS sectors to the UK economy;

    • Creative Industries
    • Cultural Sector
    • Gambling
    • Sport
    • Tourism industries (constructed on a different basis to the tourism sector estimates in our other economic estimates releases)

Users should note that there is overlap between DCMS sector definitions. Estimates are not available for the civil society sector, because they are not identifiable in the data source used for this release.

Tourism industries estimates in this release are constructed on a different basis to the tourism sector estimates in our other economic estimates and will be larger as they take into account the entire industry rather than strictly tourism activity.

The release also includes estimates for the audio visual sector.

A definition for each sector is available in the published data tables. Further information on all these sectors is available in the associated technical report along with details of methods and data limitations.

    Recent changes to this release

We have made a number of changes to DCMS sector economic estimates: business demographics in recent years:

    • previous reports have included data on charities registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales, Community Interest Companies (CICs) and the now-discontinued Public Service Mutuals which were defined as civil society organisations.
    • previous releases have included estimates of the turnover produced by businesses in each employment band and the number of businesses by foreign-owned status, both of which are not available in this release due to the change in data source from the Annual Business Survey (ABS) to the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR).

Additional information about the change in data source from the ABS to the IDBR in 2022 can be found in the source data change summary note.

We welcome any views on these changes at evidence@dcms.gov.uk.

The Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB) provides detailed annual data for all U.S. business establishments with paid employees by geography, industry, and enterprise size. This program covers all NAICS industries except crop and animal production; rail transportation; National Postal Service; pension, health, welfare, and vacation funds; trusts, estates, and agency accounts; private households; and public administration. The SUSB also excludes most government employees. Further, SUSB data for years 1988-1997 were tabulated based on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. The SUSB features several arts-related NAICS industries, including the following: Arts, entertainment, and recreation (NAICS Code 71) Performing arts companies Spectator sports Promoters of performing arts, sports, and similar events Independent artists, writers, and performers Museums, historical sites, and similar institutions Amusement parks and arcades Professional, scientific, and technical services (NAICS Code 54) Architectural services Graphic Design Services Landscape architectural services Photographic services Retail trade (NAICS Code 44-45) Sporting goods, hobby, and musical instrument stores Sewing, needlework, and piece goods stores Book stores Art dealers Also, the SUSB features several arts related SIC industries, including the following: Commercial photography (SIC Code 7335) Commercial art and graphic design (SIC Code 7336) Museums and art galleries (SIC Code 8412) Dance studios, schools, and halls (SIC Code 7911) Theatrical producers and services (SIC Code 7922) Sports clubs, managers, & promoters (SIC Code 7941) Motion Picture Production & Services (SIC Code 7810) Data compiled for the SUSB are extracted from the Business Register (BR). The BR contains continuously updated data from the Census Bureau's economic censuses and currently business surveys, quarterly and annual Federal tax records and other department and federal statistics. SUSB data are available approximately 24 months after each reference year and are available for the United States, each state, and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA). The annual SUSB consist of number of firms, number of establishments, annual payroll, and employment during the week of March 12. In addition, estimated receipts data are included for years ending in 2 and 7. Dynamic data, which are created from the Business Information Tracking Series (BITS), consist of the number of establishments and corresponding employment change for births, deaths, expansions, and contractions. The SUSB is important because it provides the only source of annual, complete, and consistent enterprise-level data for U.S. businesses, with industry detail. Private businesses use the data for market research, strategic business planning, and managing sales territories. State and local governments, as well as, budget, economic development, and planning offices use the data to assess business changes, develop fiscal policies, and plan future policies and programs. In addition, the data are the standard reference source for small business statistics. Users can view the latest SUSB annual data and employment change data on the main SUSB page. For more detailed industry and employment size classes, users can download additional data in comma-delimited format. Annual data are tabulated back to 1988 and employment change data back to 1989-1990. Data users can find news and updates about the SUSB data via the News & Updates section.

It includes the number of firms, revenue, number of employees, and annual payroll, broken down by industry and owner demographics including as sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.About NES-DThe Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics series (NES-D) provides information on the demographic characteristics of nonemployer businesses. The NES-D is the result of a research project by the Census Bureau to complete the picture of U.S. business ownership by demographics for the United States. Historically, the quinquennial Survey of Business Owners (SBO) provided the only comprehensive source of information on both employer and nonemployer businesses by demographic characteristics of the business owners. In 2017, the SBO was replaced by the Annual Business Survey (ABS). The ABS is an annual survey that collects demographic characteristics from employer businesses. However, the ABS excludes the collection of demographic data from nonemployer businesses. The NES-D was developed to produce similar estimates as ABS on owner demographics for nonemployer businesses. The NES-D is not a survey; rather, it leverages existing individual-level administrative records to assign demographic characteristics to the universe of nonemployer businesses. Demographic characteristics including sex, ethnicity, race, veteran status, owner age, place of birth, and U.S. citizenship are assigned to nonemployer business owners.Together, the NES-D and the ABS will continue to provide the only source of detailed and comprehensive statistics on the scope, nature and activities of all U.S. businesses by the demographic characteristics of the business owners. NES-D data will be available annually by detailed geography and industry levels, receipt-size class, and legal form of organization (LFO). Beginning with the 2019 NES-D, the data will include urban and rural classification.

    Description

Data on enterprise births, deaths, active enterprises and survival rates across boroughs.

    Data includes:

    1. the most recent annual figures for enterprise births and deaths
    2. a time series of the number of births and deaths of entrprises together with a percentage of births and deaths to active enterprises in a given year
    3. a time series of the number of active enterprises.
    4. survival rates of enterprises for up to 5 years after birth

    Notes and definitions:

    • The starting point for business demography is the concept of a population of active businesses in a reference year (t). These are defined as businesses that had either turnover or employment at any time during the reference period.
    • A birth is identified as a business that was present in year t, but did not exist in year t-1 or t-2. Births are identified by making comparison of annual active population files and identifying those present in the latest file, but not the two previous ones.
    • A death is defined as a business that was on the active file in year t, but was no longer present in the active file in t+1 and t+2. In order to provide an early estimate of deaths, an adjustment has been made to the 2007 and 2008 deaths to allow for reactivations. These figures are provisional and subject to revision.

Data on size of firms (micro-business, SME, large) for business and employees in London by industry can be found on the ONS website.

    Description

Overview This dataset re-shares cartographic and demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau to provide an obvious supplement to Open Environments Block Group publications. These results do not reflect any proprietary or predictive model. Rather, they extract from Census Bureau results with some proportions and aggregation rules applied. For additional support or more detail, please see the Census Bureau citations below. Cartographics refer to shapefiles shared in the Census TIGER/Line publications. Block Group areas are updated annually, with major revisions accompanying the Decennial Census at the turn of each decade. These shapes are useful for visualizing estimates as a map and relating geographies based upon geo-operations like overlapping. This data is kept in a geodatabase file format and requires the geopandas package and its supporting fiona and DAL software. Demographics are taken from popular variables in the American Community Survey (ACS) including age, race, income, education and family structure. This data simply requires csv reader software or pythons pandas package. While the demographic data has many columns, the cartographic data has a very, very large column called "geometry" storing the many-point boundaries of each shape. So, this process saves the data separately, with demographics columns in a csv file and geometry in a gpd file needed an installation of geopandas, fiona and DAL software. More details on the ACS variables selected and derivation rules applied can be found in the commentary docstrings in the source code found here: https://github.com/OpenEnvironments/blockgroupdemographics. ## Files While the demographic data has many columns, the cartographic data has a very, very large column called "geometry" storing the many-point boundaries of each shape. So, this process saves the data separately, with demographics columns in a csv file named YYYYblcokgroupdemographics.csv. The cartographic column, 'geometry', is shared as file named YYYYblockgroupdemographics-geometry.pkl. This file needs an installation of geopandas, fiona and DAL software.

    About

These Economic Estimates are National Statistics providing an estimate of the contribution of DCMS Sectors to the UK economy, measured by the number of businesses.

We have experimented with using a different, more timely data source to calculate this year’s Business Demographics statistics. As a result, they are not comparable with earlier DCMS Sector Business Demographics publications. More information is provided in these published documents and in the “Call for Feedback” section below.

    Content

    These statistics cover the contributions of the following DCMS sectors to the UK economy;

    • Creative Industries
    • Cultural Sector
    • Digital Sector
    • Gambling
    • Sport
    • Telecoms
    • Tourism (defined in this release as the Tourism Industries)

Users should note that there is overlap between DCMS Sector definitions and that the Telecoms sector sits wholly within the Digital sector. Estimates are not available for the Civil Society sector, because they are not identifiable in the data source used for this release.

The release also includes estimates for the Audio Visual sector, which is not a DCMS Sector but is “adjacent” to it and includes some industries also common to DCMS Sectors.

A definition for each sector is available in the published data tables.

    Released

These statistics were first published on 8 December 2022

    Call for Feedback

In this publication we have experimented with using a snapshot of the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) to generate estimates of DCMS Business Demographics, rather than the Annual Business Survey (ABS) as in previous releases. This has the advantage of being more timely, and commits to most tables included in previous Business Demographics publications. We have used the March 2019, March 2020, March 2021 and March 2022 snapshots from the ONS https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/business/activitysizeandlocation/datasets/ukbusinessactivitysizeandlocation">UK business: activity, size and location release rather than raw data from the IDBR.

We are looking for feedback on this approach. We particularly welcome views on:

    • Continuing with this approach using the more timely IDBR data source.
    • Returning to the previous approach using the ABS as a data source.
    • Experimenting with a ‘mixed approach’ where estimates would be produced using the IDBR snapshot, supplemented with further data from the ABS to produce additional tables.

Please contact evidence@dcms.gov.uk before Thursday 9th February 2023 with any feedback.
