    Description

On July 21, Biden announced he was ending his bid for reelection, later endorsing Kamala Harris, who is the official Democratic nominee as of the Democratic National Convention in August. Although approval of Harris was once generally low, favorability of the vice president has spiked since announcing her presidential bid. Although the race is certainly closer since Harris began her campaign, polling has fluctuated, with support for Trump increasing just days before the election. National polling indicated that the two presidential hopefuls were 0.1 percentage points apart on November 4, 2024, making it nearly impossible to predict the results. While presidential polls are generally reliable in measuring national trends, they are not infallible, particularly in close races or predictions of Electoral College outcomes.

    Description

Billions of people outside of the US hold a vested interest in the outcome of US presidential elections, despite not being allowed to vote. We developed 9 Voting Advice Applications (VAAs) for the 2020 elections and 5 VAAs for the 2024 elections in partnership with leading newspapers across Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Across these two elections, the VAA tools offered 724,294 users from 187 countries an issue-based comparison with Biden and Trump in 2020, and with Trump and Harris in 2024. Users answered demographic questions, the issue statements, and additional attitudinal items. These issue statements covered both domestic topics and topics of the US’ foreign policy. The candidates’ positions were coded using robust primary and secondary sources on 29 (2020) and 62 (2024) issue statements. This deposit includes the candidates’ placement data as well as the user data generated by these VAAs, offering an unprecedented opportunity to analyze global perceptions of US politics and the election’s far-reaching influence on international relations.

This dataset contains the do files for replicating the analyses in “Peers’ race in adolescence and voting behavior”. The paper uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), a program project directed by Kathleen Mullan Harris and designed by J. Richard Udry, Peter S. Bearman, and Kathleen Mullan Harris at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and funded by grant P01-HD31921 from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human development, with cooperative funding from 23 other federal agencies and foundations. Special acknowledgment is due Ronald R. Rindfuss and Barbara Entwisle for assistance in the original design. Information on how to obtain the Add Health data files is available from the Add Health website (http://www.cpc.unc.edu/addhealth). No direct support was received from grant P01-HD31921 for this analysis. In order to (purchase the access to) the data, you need to contact the Carolina Population Center: http://www.cpc.unc.edu/projects/addhealth. While part of the data is accessible for free, in the paper we make use of restricted access data. We use the In-Home and In-School surveys for Wave 1 and the surveys in Waves III and IV. We also use the following additional data: from Wave I - School Network, Friend Files, School Distance Measures, and School Administrator Questionnaire; from Waves I and III - Contextual Files, Political Files; from Waves I, III and IV: Weight Files.

As of the third quarter of 2025, 16 percent of people in Great Britain indicated that they liked the current U.S. President Donald Trump, unchanged from the previous quarter. In this provided time period, Donald Trump was viewed most positively at the start of 2025. By contrast, Trump was the least popular in the first quarters of 2021 and 2022, when just 14 percent of people said they liked him. Trump returns to power in 2025 Despite indications of a close contest between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, Donald Trump won the 2024 Presidential Election quite comfortably, winning 312 electoral votes to Harris' 226. Like in the previous U.S. election in 2020, a rematch between Donald Trump and Joe Biden looked certain until Biden announced his decision to step down in favor of his Vice President Kamala Harris in July 2024. Earlier in the year, Donald Trump, saw off his rivals in the Republican primaries of 2024, with previous favorite Ron DeSantis dropping out after finishing second in Iowa. Trump invited for second state visit On February 27, 2025, the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer invited Donald Trump to a state visit to the UK for the second time, with this first state visit taking place in 2019. Before the 2019 visit, 46 percent of people in Britain supported it, compared with 40 percent who wanted the visit cancelled. As of March 2025, the share of people who supported a second state visit stood at 43 percent, with 42 percent opposing it. Although relations between Starmer and Trump have remained positive, an MP from the Scottish National Party called for the visit to be cancelled due to the ongoing fallout between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
