In 2024, households in California needed an hourly wage of over 47 U.S. dollars to afford the rent of a two-bedroom apartment. Massachusetts had the second-least affordable two-bedroom apartments, as a household would have to earn at least around 45 U.S. dollars per hour in order to afford rent payments. These figures are considerably higher than the average minimum wage in place in many states. There was no state in which a minimum wage worker could afford rent for the average two-bedroom apartment, if they only worked 40 hours a week. Where are the least affordable counties and metros? The least affordable rents were predominately in Californian counties and metropolitan areas in 2024. At present nearly half of the world’s population is under some form of government restriction to curb the spread of COVID-19, an extremely contagious disease. In Bangladesh, in the wake of five deaths and 48 infections from COVID-19, between March 24 and May 30, 2020 the government imposed a nationwide lockdown. While this lockdown restricted the spread of COVID-19, in the absence of effective support, it can generate severe food and nutrition insecurity for daily wage-based workers. Of the 61 million employed labor force in Bangladesh, nearly 35% of them are paid on a daily basis. This study examines the food security and welfare impacts of the COVID-19 induced lockdown on daily wage workers both in the farm and nonfarm sectors in Bangladesh. Using information from more than 50,000 respondents complied from 2016-17 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) in Bangladesh, this study estimates daily wage rates as Bangladesh Taka (BDT) 272.2 in the farm sector and BDT 361.5 in the nonfarm sector. Using the estimated daily wages earnings, this study estimates that a one-day complete lockdown generates a US$64.2 million equivalent economic loss only considering the wage loss of the daily wage workers. After estimating the daily per capita food expenditure separately for farm and nonfarm households, this study estimates a minimum compensation package for the daily wage-based farm and nonfarm households around US $ 1 per day per household to ensure minimum food security for the daily wage-based worker households.

Based on our analysis ACS 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates, we present the following observations: - All workers, aged 15 years and older: In Low Moor, the median income for all workers aged 15 years and older, regardless of work hours, was $49,018 for males and $31,250 for females.

These income figures highlight a substantial gender-based income gap in Low Moor. Women, regardless of work hours, earn 64 cents for each dollar earned by men. This significant gender pay gap, approximately 36%, underscores concerning gender-based income inequality in the city of Low Moor.

- Full-time workers, aged 15 years and older: In Low Moor, among full-time, year-round workers aged 15 years and older, males earned a median income of $56,250, while females earned $44,375, leading to a 21% gender pay gap among full-time workers. This illustrates that women earn 79 cents for each dollar earned by men in full-time roles. This analysis indicates a widening gender pay gap, showing a substantial income disparity where women, despite working full-time, face a more significant wage discrepancy compared to men in the same roles.

Surprisingly, the gender pay gap percentage was higher across all roles, including non-full-time employment, for women compared to men. This suggests that full-time employment offers a more equitable income scenario for women compared to other employment patterns in Low Moor.

Abstract This paper studies potential explanations of the declining wage inequality in Brazil such as changes in demographic/skill composition, wage structure, occupations/sectors and minimum wage. I perform a wage inequality decomposition to quantify composition and price effects and use a CES production function to estimate the effects of the skill supply on relative wages. I find that the fall in upper-tail inequality is driven by changes in the returns to education and experience, while that in lower-tail inequality is also given by those to minimum wage and female workers. These patterns are consistent with the decline in relative wages between skill groups which are given by the increase in both the supply of skills and the real minimum wage.
