In the last few decades, the Democratic Party has often pulled ahead of the Republican Party in terms of party identification. However, 2022 saw a shift in party identification, with slightly more Americans identifying with the Republican Party for the first time since 2011, when both parties stood at 45 percent in 2011. These values include not only those surveyed who identified with a major political party, but also those who identified as independent, but have leanings towards one party over another.
Since 1988, the share of adults in the U.S. who identify as political independents has continued to grow, often surpassing the that of Democrats or Republicans. In 2024, approximately 43 percent of adults rejected identification with the major parties, compared to 28 percent of respondents identified with the Democratic Party, and 28 percent with the Republican Party.
According to a 2023 survey, Americans between 18 and 29 years of age were more likely to identify with the Democratic Party than any other surveyed age group. While 39 percent identified as Democrats, only 14 percent identified ad Republicans. However, those 50 and older identified more with the Republican Party.

The data for this web map is compiled from King County Elections voter registration data for the years 2013-2019. The total number of registered voters is based on the geo-location of the voter's registered address at the time of the general election for each year. In the map the lighter colors represent a relatively low percentage range of voter registration and the darker colors represent a relatively high percentage range of voter registration. The 2019 General Election Voter Turnout layer is voter turnout data by historical precinct boundaries for the corresponding year. The King County Demographics Layer is census data for language, income, poverty, race and ethnicity at the census tract level and is based on the 2010-2014 American Community Survey 5 year Average provided by the United States Census Bureau. Since the data is based on a survey, they are considered to be estimates and should be used with that understanding. The demographic data sets were developed and are maintained by King County Staff to support the King County Equity and Social Justice program. NYU Libraries has licensed access to the L2 Political Academic Voter File. The file is a continuously updated dataset consisting of public information for every registered voter in the United States and includes basic socio-demographic indicators (some of which are modeled), consumer preferences, political party affiliation, voting history, and more.
The data consists of .tab files organized into individual state folders (all states and DC). Each state folder contains two files: demographics data and voter history data, with a data dictionary for each dataset. The size of the folders vary by state and data for all states adds up to approximately 40 GB. This collection of historical election data contains state files that list county-level returns for over 90 percent of all elections to the offices of president, governor, United States senator, and United States representative from 1824 through 1968. The data files include returns for all parties and candidates (as well as write-in and scattering votes if available for individual states), and for special elections as well as regularly-scheduled contests. Over 1,000 individual party names and many additional unaffiliated candidates are included.

These data are derived from CANDIDATE NAME AND CONSTITUENCY TOTALS, 1788-1990 (ICPSR 0002). They consist of returns for two-thirds of all elections from 1788 to 1823 to the offices of president, governor, and United States representative, and over 90 percent of all elections to those offices since 1824. They also include information on United States Senate elections since 1912. Returns for one additional statewide office are included beginning with the 1968 election. This file provides a set of derived measures describing the vote totals for candidates and the pattern of contest in each constituency. These measures include the total number of votes cast for all candidates in the election, each candidate's percentage of the vote received, and several measures of the relative performance of each candidate. They are appended to the individual candidate records and permit extensive analysis of electoral contests over time. This dataset contains returns for all parties and candidates (as well as scattering vote) for general elections and special elections, including information on elections for which returns were available only at the constituency level. Included in this edition are data from the District of Columbia election for United States senator and United States representative. The offices of two senators and one representative were created by the "District of Columbia Statehood Constitutional Convention Initiative," which was approved by District voters in 1980. Elections for these offices were postponed until the 1990 general election. The three offices are currently local District positions, which will turn into federal offices if the District becomes a state.
According to a survey conducted in the United States in summer 2022, 79 percent of Republican respondents felt that news coverage had a great deal of political bias, making these voters the most likely to hold this opinion of the news media. Independents also felt strongly about this issue, whereas only 33 percent of Democrats said they saw a great deal of political bias in news.

Political bias in news can alienate consumers and may also be poorly received when coverage of a non-political topic leans too heavily towards one end of the spectrum. However, at the same time, personal politics in general are often closely interlinked with how a consumer perceives or engages with news and information. A clear example of this can be found when looking at political news sources used weekly in the U.S., with Republicans and Democrats opting for the national networks they most identify with. But what if audiences cannot find the content they want?
A change in behavior
Engaging with news aligning with one’s politics is not uncommon. That said, perceived bias in mainstream media may lead some consumers to look elsewhere and turn away from more “neutral” outlets if they believe the news is no longer partisan. Data shows that a number of leading conservative websites registered a substantial increase in visitors year over year. Looking at this data in context of Republicans’ concern about bias in political news, it is likely that this trend will continue and consumers will pursue outlets they feel resonate with them most.
In 2018, Massachusetts was the state that leaned most toward the Democratic Party, with 56 percent of people surveyed throughout the year stating they either identify with or lean towards the Democrats. On the other end of the political spectrum, 59 percent of respondents in Wyoming preferred the Republican Party.

This study sought to describe the civic and political behavior of the American public, with a special focus on youth ages 15 to 25. Utilizing dual surveying methods, both telephone- and Internet-based surveys as their methodology, the researchers sampled 3,246 respondents in order to examine what specific civic and political activities citizens were engaging in and the frequencies of those activities. Political attitudes and behaviors included but were not limited to voting, volunteering and signing petitions. Researchers measured respondents' civic and political involvement with 19 Core Indicators of Engagement, including a combination of civic indicators, electoral indicators, and indicators of political voice. The collection includes three datasets: National Youth Survey of Civic Engagement, Spring 2002: 396 variables for 1166 cases National Civic Engagement Survey I, Spring 2002: 266 variables for 3246 cases National Civic Engagement Survey II (Replication Survey), Fall 2002: 163 variables for 1400 cases Demographic variables in this collection include: Education Status/Level, Gender, Age, Race, Ethnicity, Marital Status, Employment Status, Housing Type, Household Income/Household Demographics, Geographic Region, Religious Affiliation, and Political Affiliation.
As of November 2019, 61 percent of Democrats and Democrats leaners were found to distrust Fox News for political and election news. Conversely, the source was the most trusted among Republicans. Radio shows by conservative media personalities Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity was also distrusted by 43 and 38 percent of Democrat respondents. Overall, Democrats were more likely to trust a wide range of political news sources.
The share of people in the United States who trust in the government has been steadily decreasing for both Democrats and Republicans. However, 2024 saw an increase across all political ideologies, but remained lowest amongst conservative Republicans, with only seven percent of those surveyed inMay 2024 stating they trust their government always or most of the time. This figure stood at 66 percent in 1972.
Only 16 percent of respondents in the U.S. believed that the government is responding well to the issue of global warming, according to a survey carried out in Spring 2024. On average, Democrats were more likely to agree with such a statement, with 20 percent of them saying the government is responding well to global warming. Republicans were more critical of the current government's take on global warming, with only 11 percent of them agreeing with the statement.
According to a 2023 survey of U.S. adults, non-Hispanic white adults were much more likely to identify as Republican or Republican-leaning than non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic adults.

According to a survey held in September 2024, the share of Democrats who trust the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly in the United States amounted to 54 percent, down from 58 percent in the previous year. Meanwhile, 12 percent of Republicans said that they trusted the news media a great deal or a fair amount.
