The Education Facility point feature class represents public and private primary, secondary, and post-secondary school facilities in the Des Moines, Iowa metropolitan area. This dataset was created for a FEMA grant project (2008 Legislative Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program, LPDM-2008-IA-77-002) to develop data and a methodology for performing GIS-based Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA2000) Multi Hazard Mitigation Plan Risk Assessments. The data were developed from local, state, and national sources and prepared by the University of Northern Iowa GeoInformatics Training, Research, Education and Extension Center (GeoTree ) between May 2010 and April 2011. The data were accepted and are maintained by the City of Des Moines and Des Moines Area Regional GIS partners. This dataset was developed for use in the Des Moines Area Regional GIS, which supports public safety response and emergency management in the Des Moines metropolitan area and surrounding counties. The Des Moines Area Regional GIS is a shared data repository hosted by the City of Des Moines. The Regional GIS partnership includes City of Des Moines, Polk County, and several cities within Polk County. Each partner is responsible for maintaining data for their respective jurisdiction.

The Fire Station point feature class represents Fire Station facilities in the Des Moines Regional GIS database which covers Polk County, the cities or incorporated areas of Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Grimes, West Des Moines, Clive, Urbandale, Altoona, Pleasant Hill, and Polk City. The Street Centerlines feature class represents street centerlines within The City of Des Moines boundaries and the Regional GIS (RGIS) area.

The Location Facility feature class is one of 20 essential (critical) facility feature classes developed for and maintained by the Des Moines Area Regional GIS for the purpose of performing hazard risk assessments and loss estimation using GIS. The data is also appropriately used in preparing hazard mitigation plans, emergency response plans, and general maps. The data is not compatible for direct use in HAZUS-MH (www.fema.gov/hazus) but may be extracted and converted for use in HAZUS-MH using the Comprehensive Data Management System (CDMS) tools. Used in HAZUS-MH, the data provides a basis for estimating the damage to and resulting loss of functionality of essential facilities in a given flood, hurricane, and/or earthquake scenario. Thereby, the HAZUS-MH user can model the economic and physical impacts of a flood, hurricane, and/or earthquake scenario.

Geospatial (GIS) Data on glacial topography derived from LiDAR elevation data. Contains GIS vector data (in ESRI file geodatabases) that characterize the geometry ofglacial landforms created during the last glaciation (12,000 to 14,000 years ago), such as moraines, ice walled lake plains, doubly breached doughnuts and eskers and is supplementedby online LiDAR derived elevation data. For easy data access, an ArcGIS Pro 3.0 project (aprx) file is provided.

In 2006, the Des Moines Regional GIS group contracted with Sanborn to digitize the planimetric features utilizing 3D stereo digitizing methods and GIS processing required under the RFP. The Program Management task included coordination and oversight of the NewCom Technology tasks; incorporating the imagery and photogrammetric data from the spring of 2006 flight, stereo digitizing the planimetric features and GIS processing of the impervious surface features to ensure clean topological data structure for subsequent area / polygon calculations. Maintenance of the data includes heads-up digitizing using the orthophoto images.

Sanitary Sewer Pipes was created from the importing of the City of Des Moines Engineering departments MGE sewer database into a geodatabase. Design of the geodatabase was made to accommodate Public Works GBAMS asset software. Domain values for the geodatabase was made by interpolation and discussion between Public Works, Engineering, and GIS.
