    Description

This site is part of pilot effort at the US Department of Energy (DOE) - Office of NEPA Policy and Compliance to evaluate providing IT web services as a shared service, hosted on the cloud, and using only Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The site is an integrated component of the larger NEPAnode project but is a stand alone service. The site allows users to upload static map images with no geographic data so that they can be accurately referenced/rectified on an webmap. This site allows for the revitalizing of otherwise unusable/archived maps such as historic maps, site surveys, site plans, etc. turning them into usable geographic data which is subsequently made available as a KML file for use in Google Earth/Maps and as a Web Mapping Service (WMS) for using in web-based webmapping application such as NEPAnode or in desktop GIS software.

    Description

RTB Maps is a cloud-based electronic Atlas. We used ArGIS 10 for Desktop with Spatial Analysis Extension, ArcGIS 10 for Server on-premise, ArcGIS API for Javascript, IIS web services based on .NET, and ArcGIS Online combining data on the cloud with data and applications on our local server to develop an Atlas that brings together many of the map themes related to development of roots, tubers and banana crops. The Atlas is structured to allow our participating scientists to understand the distribution of the crops and observe the spatial distribution of many of the obstacles to production of these crops. The Atlas also includes an application to allow our partners to evaluate the importance of different factors when setting priorities for research and development. The application uses weighted overlay analysis within a multi-criteria decision analysis framework to rate the importance of factors when establishing geographic priorities for research and development.Datasets of crop distribution maps, agroecology maps, biotic and abiotic constraints to crop production, poverty maps and other demographic indicators are used as a key inputs to multi-objective criteria analysis.Further metadata/references can be found here: http://gisweb.ciat.cgiar.org/RTBmaps/DataAvailability_RTBMaps.htmlDISCLAIMER, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS AND PERMISSIONS:This service is provided by Roots, Tubers and Bananas CGIAR Research Program as a public service. Description

Abstract: The objective of this work was to develop and provide a free web application able to generate thematic maps. The initiative aims to incorporate the functionalities of the “Software para Definição de Unidades de Manejo” (SDUM) desktop application, which has proven to be suitable for working with thematic maps and management zones, but that was only available for desktop computers. The developed web application was tested with real data from two agricultural fields located in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Thematic maps of soil and plant characteristics relevant to precision agriculture were created through the following interpolation methods: inverse distance, moving average, and nearest neighbor. The obtained results show that the usage of this web tool allows identifying areas with the same behavior toward soil variables, making it possible for the user to have a better and more accurate vision of the area to be worked on and to identify possible causes of variation in productivity. Because it is installed in a server with on-demand features, the software has a satisfactory performance from a functional point of view and can be accessed from any web environment.

2014 Coastal Land Use Data. Digital survey of aerial imagery and desktop mapping software. Carried out by the University of Leicester. Project details: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/documents/mapping-our-shores-fifty-years-of-land-use-change-at-the-coast.pdf In 1965, concerned about the impact of development along the coast, the National Trust launched ‘Enterprise Neptune’ to help raise money to buy and protect the most ‘pristine’ stretches. In order to understand which areas were most at risk from development, University of Reading staff & students were commissioned to carry out a physical coastal land use survey that was lovingly recorded on 350 OS 2.5 miles to 1 inch scale maps (1965 Coastal Land Use dataset).Half a century later, the Neptune Coastline Campaign, has raised £65 million, enabling the National Trust to acquire an additional 550 miles of coastline to a total of 775 miles. To celebrate this milestone the Trust commissioned the University of Leicester to re-survey the land use along the coast with a desktop methodology that focused on change. For more information on the creation of the Land Use datasets see: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/tran.12128/abstract

    Description

The reciprocal relationships between ecological process and landscape pattern are fundamental to landscape ecology. Landscape ecologists traditionally use raster maps portraying classified features such as land use or land cover categories, and metrics suggested by the patch-corridor-matrix conceptual model of pattern. Less attention has been given to the landscape gradient conceptual model and raster maps portraying numeric features such as greenness or percent vegetation cover. We introduce the open-source tool GraySpatCon to calculate and map a variety of landscape pattern metrics from both conceptual models using either categorical or numeric maps. The 51 metrics, drawn mostly from the landscape ecology and image processing literatures, are calculated from the frequencies of input pixel values and/or the pixel value adjacencies in an analysis region. GraySpatCon conducts either a moving window analysis which produces a continuous map of a pattern metric, or a global analysis which produces a single metric value. We describe an implementation in the GuidosToolbox desktop application which allows novice users to interactively explore GraySpatCon functionality. In the R desktop environment, we demonstrate several metrics using an example map of percent tree cover and illustrate a multi-scale moving window analysis to identify scale domains. Comparisons of computational efficiency indicate a substantial GraySpatCon advantage over related software in the R environment.
