    Description

Data files containing detailed information about vehicles in the UK are also available, including make and model data.

Some tables have been withdrawn and replaced. The table index for this statistical series has been updated to provide a full map between the old and new numbering systems used in this page.

Tables VEH0101 and VEH1104 have not yet been revised to include the recent changes to Large Goods Vehicles (LGV) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) definitions for data earlier than 2023 quarter 4. This will be amended as soon as possible.

    How to use CSV files

CSV files can be used either as a spreadsheet (using Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet packages) or digitally using software packages and languages (for example, R or Python).

When using as a spreadsheet, there will be no formatting, but the file can still be explored like our publication tables. Due to their size, older software might not be able to open the entire file.

    Description

A dataset providing information of the vehicle types and counts in several locations in Leeds. Purpose of the project The aim of this work was to examine the profile of vehicle types in Leeds, in order to compare local emissions with national predictions. Traffic was monitored for a period of one week at two Inner Ring Road locations in April 2016 and at seven sites around the city in June 2016. The vehicle registration data was then sent to the Department for Transport (Dft), who combined it with their vehicle type data, replacing the registration number with an anonymised ‘Unique ID’. The data is provided in three folders:- Raw Data – contains the data in the format it was received, and a sample of each format. Processed Data – the data after processing by LCC, lookup tables, and sample data. Outputs – Excel spreadsheets summarising the data for each site, for various time/dates. Initially a dataset was received for the Inner Ring Road (see file “IRR ANPR matched to DFT vehicle type list.csv”), with vehicle details, but with missing / uncertain data on the vehicles emissions Eurostandard class. Of the 820,809 recorded journeys, from the pseudo registration number field (UniqueID) it was determined that there were 229,891 unique vehicles, and 31,912 unique “vehicle types” based on the unique concatenated vehicle description fields. It was therefore decided to import the data into an MS Access database, create a table of vehicle types, and to add the necessary fields/data so that combined with the year of manufacture / vehicle registration, the appropriate Eurostandard could be determined for the particular vehicle. The criteria for the Eurostandards was derived mainly from www.dieselnet.com and summarised in a spreadsheet (“EuroStandards.xlsx”). Vehicle types were assigned to a “VehicleClass” (see “Lookup Tables.xlsx”) and “EU class” with additional fields being added for any modified data (Gross Vehicle Weight – “GVM_Mod”; Engine capacity – “EngineCC_mod”; No of passenger seats – “PassSeats”; and Kerb weight – “KerbWt”). Missing data was added from the internet lookups, extrapolation from known data, and by association – eg 99% of cars with an engine size Additional data was then received from the Inner Ring Road site, giving journey date/time and incorporating the Taxi data for licensed taxis in Leeds. Similar data for Sites 1-7 was also then received, and processed to determine the “VehicleClass” and “EU class”. A mixture of Update queries, and VBA processing was then used to provide the Level 1-6 breakdown of vehicle types (see “Lookup Tables.xlsx”). The data was then combined into one database, so that the required Excel spreadsheets could be exported for the required time/date periods (see “outputs” folder).

Changes to tables including car mileage data (NTS0901, NTS0904)

Following a user engagement exercise, the presentation of the car mileage estimates has changed for 2023, to include more car types and fuel types (subject to availability of data) and to discontinue providing a private or company car breakdown. These changes have resulted in revisions to the estimates in the backseries. Please see table notes for more details.

Previous versions of these tables (up to 2022) are available.

    Description

The statistics refer to the volume of road traffic in Wales. Road traffic estimates for Wales are compiled by the Department for Transport on behalf of the Welsh Government. These estimates are based on annual roadside manual road traffic counts carried out across Wales during the year. These roadside counts are combined with automatic traffic count (ATC) data and road lengths to produce overall traffic estimates. Traffic estimates for major roads are based on a census of all such roads whereas traffic estimates for minor roads are estimated by calculating growth rates from a fixed sample of count points on the minor road network. Further details of the methodology are available from the DfT at the link below: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/road-traffic-speeds-and-congestion-statistics-guidance . All surfaced roads (excluding Trunk Roads) are included in the estimates. The categories are: Major roads: Motorways. Dual carriageways designed for fast traffic with access limited to motor vehicles, and with relatively few places for joining or leaving. The only motorway in Wales is the M4. A County roads. All other A roads. Estimates for A roads are also available with sub-categories for urban and rural roads on StatsWales. Urban roads are those within the boundaries of settlements with a population of 10,000 or more, and rural roads are all other non-motorway major roads. Minor roads: B roads. Roads intended to connect different areas, and to feed traffic between A roads and smaller roads on the network. Classified unnumbered. Smaller roads intended to connect together unclassified roads with A and B roads, and often linking a housing estate or a village to the rest of the network. Similar to ‘minor roads’ on an Ordnance Survey map and sometimes known unofficially as C roads. Unclassified. Local roads intended for local traffic. The vast majority of roads fall within this category. The analysis by vehicle type is based on roadside observation where vehicles are classified according to their general appearance. The vehicle types identified are: 1) Pedal cycles: Includes all non-motorised cycles, 2) Motorcycles: Two-wheeled motor vehicles, including mopeds, motor scooters and motorcycle combinations, 3) Cars and taxis: Includes estate cars, all light vans with windows to the rear of the driver's seat, passenger vehicles with 9 seats or fewer, three-wheeled cars, motorised-invalid carriages, Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Jeeps. Cars towing caravans or trailers are counted as one vehicle, 4) Buses and coaches: Includes all public service vehicles and works buses other than vehicles with less than 10 seats, 5) Light vans: All goods vehicles up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight. This includes all car-based vans and those of the next larger carrying-capacity, such as transit vans. Also included are ambulances, pick-ups, milk floats and pedestrian-controlled motor vehicles. Most of this group are delivery vans of one type or another, 6) Goods vehicles: All goods vehicles over 3,500kg gross vehicle weight. Includes tractors (without trailers), road-rollers, box vans and similar large vans. A two-axle motor tractor unit without trailer is also included, 7) All motor vehicles: All vehicles except pedal cycles. Traffic volume is measured using Vehicle Kilometres (VKM), which are calculated by multiplying the annual average daily flow of traffic by the corresponding length of road. For example, 1 vehicle travelling 1 kilometre a day for a year would be 365 VKM over a year. In this release estimates are presented as billion vehicle kilometres (bvk).

    Description

These statistics provide insight into the speeds at which drivers choose to travel and their compliance with speed limits under free flow conditions but should not be taken as estimates of actual compliance or actual average speed across the wider road network.

These statistics cover periods affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Long-term trends in vehicle speed limit compliance have usually been stable over time. Without coronavirus, we would have expected this to continue.

    In 2021:

    • speed compliance was similar to previous years and has remained broadly stable since 2011, with the exception of 2020 which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic
    • 48% of cars exceeded the limit on motorways
    • 11% of cars exceeded the limit on national speed limit single carriageways
    • 51% of cars exceeded the limit on 30mph roads

Seasonal factors such as differences in light or weather conditions may affect differences in compliance throughout the year, particularly in motorcycles. In most vehicle types, there are generally only small differences in compliance between each season.
