In September 2025, one gallon of diesel cost an average of 3.75 U.S. dollars in the United States. That was an increase compared to the month prior, and higher than prices in September 2024. Impact of crude prices on motor fuel consumer prices Diesel prices are primarily determined by the cost of crude oil. In fact, crude oil regularly accounts for around 50 percent of end consumer prices of diesel. As such, supply restrictions or weak demand outlooks influence prices at the pump. The fall in diesel prices noted since the latter half of 2024 is a reflection of lower crude prices. Diesel and gasoline price development The usage of distillate fuel oil began in the 1930s, but until further development in the 1960s, diesel vehicles were mostly applied to commercial use only. In the U.S., diesel-powered cars remain a fairly small portion of the automobile market and diesel consumption is far lower than gasoline consumption. In general, gasoline also tends to be more widely available than diesel fuel and usually sells for a lower retail price. However, diesel engines have better fuel economy than gasoline engines and, as such, tend to be used for large commercial vehicles.

The average price for regular gasoline in the United States stood at **** U.S. dollars per gallon on October 27, 2025. This compared to a diesel price of **** U.S. dollars per gallon. Prices for gasoline and diesel remained stable that week. Real price surge of 2022 and 2023 still below 2011 to 2014 prices When looking at the real price of gasoline over time, U.S. drivers had to pay notably more in the years between 2011 and 2014. The surge in prices noted throughout 2022 and partly for 2023, which followed supply constraints, was still lower in terms of real U.S. dollars. U.S. on the lower-end spectrum of worldwide motor fuel prices The U.S. has some of the lowest conventional motor fuel prices in the world. Although fuel prices are usually higher in high-income countries, the U.S. profits from its position as the world’s largest crude oil producer and can keep retail prices for oil products comparatively low. For example, among high-income countries, prices for automotive premium gasoline (RON 95) were only lower in Russia and Saudi Arabia - countries where crude oil and oil product exports are in part restricted by sanctions, thus keeping domestic supply high.

Crude oil is the greatest cost component determining diesel retail prices in the United States. In August 2025, 42 percent of the diesel retail price was set by crude oil costs. That month, one gallon of diesel sold for an average of 3.75 U.S. dollars. U.S. diesel prices have generally stagnated in late 2025. Fuel consumption remains high despite higher prices Diesel and gasoline prices have experienced significant fluctuations over the past decades. In 2024, the average gasoline price stood at 3.3 U.S. dollars per gallon, a decrease from the 2022 peak but still higher than early 2000s levels. Despite these changes, U.S. gasoline consumption has remained high, averaging around 8.5 million barrels per day in 2024, with seasonal variations affecting demand. Tax impact on fuel costs across states Taxes play a significant role in determining fuel prices, with state-level differences creating notable price variations across the country. As of 2023, the average state tax for gasoline was 30.5 U.S. cents per gallon, while diesel faced a slightly higher average tax of 33.15 U.S. cents. These taxes contribute to the overall retail price and are often reinvested in road infrastructure. California, for instance, imposes some of the highest gasoline taxes in the country, reaching 68.1 U.S. cents per gallon in January 2024, which significantly impacts the state's fuel prices.

The cost of diesel fuel in the United States reached an annual average of 3.76 U.S. dollars per gallon in 2024. This was a decrease compared to the previous year, when diesel sold for an average of 4.21 U.S. dollars per gallon. In 2022, increased economic activity and thus fuel demand combined with supply constraints following the Russia-Ukraine war, which resulted in a notable rise in monthly diesel prices Crude oil prices and their impact on motor fuel prices Motor fuel prices largely mirror major oil benchmarks, such as the OPEC reference basket, WTI, and Brent. As such, the oil glut in 2015 and 2016, which followed years of increased oil production output by the U.S., is largely responsible for the fall in diesel prices seen in those years. The same is true for the 2020 pandemic-induced oil crisis and fall in benchmarks that year. Global Fuel Prices Database provides monthly retail fuel prices of regular gasoline (research octane number, RON, below 95), premium gasoline (RON of 95 or above), diesel, kerosene, LPG for automobiles, bottled LPG, heating oil, and HFO for the period between December 2015 and April 2025. The database relies on publicly available information. For countries that regulate fuel prices, the author manually collected monthly price announcements from the websites or social media of petroleum agencies, ministry of finance, ministry of energy, and statistical offices. In some cases, the data were sourced from local news articles publishing the government’s press releases on price adjustments. For countries with deregulated prices that conduct regular fuel price surveys, the author manually collected the published monthly average prices for the country and if available for several major cities in the country.

Despite fluctuating, the price of diesel fuel per liter in the Netherlands has seen an overall increase since the year 2000. In that year, the average price amounted to ** euro cents per liter. By 2021 this had increased to **** euros. In comparison, the price per liter of unleaded ** octane fuel was **** euros in the same year. TaxationThe average price for a liter of diesel before taxation in the Netherlands was **** British pounds per liter in 2018. More than half of the total price was from taxes at **** British pounds. This was one of the highest taxations on the fuel in the European Union, with only eight other countries paying more. Diesel sales fall The number of newly registered passenger diesel cars has seen a significant decline since 2015. In that year there were approximately *** thousand registered in the Netherlands, but the following year this fell to just ******. In 2017 the number fell further and amounted to ******, signaling a shift away from this type of vehicle. By 2020, diesel cars predating 2005 will be banned from entering the A10 ring road area around the Dutch capital in a bid to curb air pollution, with a complete diesel ban scheduled for 2030.

In 2024, diesel prices in Poland decreased compared to the previous year, amounting to **** euros per liter. Causes of fuel price fluctuations in Poland in 2018 The increase in fuel prices in Poland was mainly influenced by changes in the international oil and fuel markets and by changes in the exchange rate of the Polish currency to the U.S. dollar. The strengthening of the zloty's exchange rate to the dollar slowed down the scale of price rises for Polish fuel consumers. In 2018, the international situation did not ensure stable prices on the market. Waiting for the introduction of oil sanctions against Iran, a possible trade war between the U.S. and China, or information about a potential further reduction in oil production by OPEC+ countries resulted in rising oil prices in global markets. As soon as it became clear that neither sanctions on Iran nor restrictions on oil production affected the supply of crude oil on the world market as expected, prices on the markets started to fall. Nevertheless, drivers and transport companies have not benefited from the rising average annual prices, although state VAT revenues have increased significantly. Higher sales of liquid fuels, rising prices, and an increase in the number of cars on Polish roads have also resulted in additional income for Polish oil companies. Biofuel market in Poland Transport is the sector that accounts for one of the most significant shares of total carbon dioxide emissions from fuel combustion. Complete replacement of oil in transport is possible but costly. The data show that the consumption of biodiesel in transport is higher every year, and, like energy, transportation has a mandatory target for Renewable Energy Systems in 2020. The dominant renewable energy source in transport is biodiesel, followed by bioethanol and renewable electricity in rail transport. The average EU share of RES in transport is over * percent, while in Poland, it is steadily growing, reaching nearly * percent in 2018.

The monthly wholesale price of diesel fuel averaged **** euros per liter in January 2025, an increase compared to the previous month. Prices increased steadily throughout 2021, to peak at *** euros per liter in 2022. The monthly tax on diesel fuel decreased by around *** euros per liter in 2022, but climbed to over *** euros per liter in 2023. In March 2025, diesel fuel taxes represented ** percent of the overall price of this fuel.
