These taxes contribute to the overall retail price and are often reinvested in road infrastructure. California, for instance, imposes some of the highest gasoline taxes in the country, reaching 68.1 U.S. cents per gallon in January 2024, which significantly impacts the state's fuel prices.

However, as oil is most often traded in future contracts (where a contract is agreed upon while product delivery will follow in the next two to three months), market speculation is one of the principal determinants for oil prices.
