    Description

    The National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) is a program of studies designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. The NHANES combines personal interviews and physical examinations, which focus on different population groups or health topics. These surveys have been conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) on a periodic basis from 1971 to 1994. In 1999, the NHANES became a continuous program with a changing focus on a variety of health and nutrition measurements designed to meet current and emerging concerns. The sample for the survey is selected to represent the U.S. population of all ages. Many of the NHANES 2001-2002 questions also were asked in NHANES II 1976-1980, Hispanic HANES 1982-1984, NHANES III 1988-1994. New questions were added to the survey based on recommendations from survey collaborators, NCHS staff, and other interagency work groups.

    In the 2001-2002 wave, the NHANES includes more than 100 datasets. Most have been combined into three datasets for convenience. Each starts with the demographic dataset and includes datasets of a specific type.

    Not all files from the 2001-2002 wave are included. This is for two reasons, both of which related to the merging variable (SEQN). For a subset of the files, SEQN is not a unique identifier for cases (i.e. some respondents have multiple cases) or SEQN is not in the file at all. The following datasets from this wave of the NHANES are not included in these three files and can be found individually from the "https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/index.htm" Target="_blank">NHANES website at the CDC:

    Description

    Following a request from the European Commission for a review of European dietary reference values (DRVs), the EFSA’s Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) has prepared a number of Scientific Opinions on DRVs for micronutrients. The DATA Unit supported this activity by estimating the nutrient intake of a number of micronutrients in nine selected European countries and different age groups. In addition, the DATA Unit also provided information on average content of food sources of the respective nutrients per country based on the composition database, as well as main food group contributors to nutrient intakes and assessed the comparability of the provided data with pertinent published intake data.

    Intake estimates have been assessed using food consumption data from the EFSA Comprehensive Food Consumption Database (EFSA, 2011a) and the EFSA Nutrient composition database. Food composition data used to populate the Nutrient composition database were provided to EFSA through the EFSA procurement project ‘Updated food composition database for nutrient intake’ (Roe at al., 2013). Data were provided following the EFSA specification for standard sample description for food and feed and were classified according to the FoodEx2 classification system of EFSA (EFSA, 2011b).

    The food composition data used in these assessments and here published cover the following vitamins and minerals: calcium (Ca); copper (Cu); cobalamin (vitamin B12); magnesium (Mg); niacin; phosphorus (P); potassium (K); riboflavin; thiamin; iron (Fe); selenium (Se); vitamin B6; vitamin K, zinc (Zn), and vitamin E1. The food composition dataset contains data from seven2 countries: Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, and United Kingdom. This dataset version has been checked for outliers but is prior to data completion for missing foods and nutrient values.

    1 Vitamin E is defined as alpha-tocopherol (AT) only, however as most food composition databases in the EU contain values as alpha-tocopherol equivalents (TE), data on TE are also provided

    Database of federally funded research projects pertaining to dietary supplements. CARDS contains projects funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Institutes and Centers (ICs) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) beginning with fiscal year 1999, the first year that NIH ICs began reporting research related to dietary supplements. Projects funded by other Federal agencies will be added to CARDS as they become available. The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) will post notices on its website and listserv when CARDS updates are completed. Codes assigned to each research project allow the CARDS user to identify: * research related to specific dietary supplement ingredients; for example, vitamin E or St. John''''s wort * the type of study; for example, a Phase III study or an animal study * health outcomes or biological effects; for example, osteoporosis or antioxidant function * whether the research is directly related or indirectly related to dietary supplements. For example, a clinical trial comparing bone density in women given a daily calcium supplement versus a placebo would be classified as directly related to dietary supplements. A study examining the activation of steroid hormone receptors by supplemental vitamin D in cell culture would be classified as indirectly related to dietary supplements because the direct physiological or health effects of vitamin D supplementation are not being studied. A search of the CARDS database can be used to sort and tabulate information for a variety of purposes. For example, a researcher may want to know which ICs at the NIH fund research on herbal supplement ingredients. A consumer may want to know if the Federal government is supporting research on a popular dietary supplement ingredient such as vitamin C.

    Description

    Background: Dietary supplements are widely used. However, dietary supplements are not always safe. For example, an estimated 23,000 emergency room visits every year in the United States were attributed to adverse events related to dietary supplement use. With the rapid development of the Internet, consumers usually seek health information including dietary supplement information online. To help consumers access quality online dietary supplement information, we have identified trustworthy dietary supplement information sources and built an evidence-based knowledge base of dietary supplement information—the integrated DIetary Supplement Knowledge base (iDISK) that integrates and standardizes dietary supplement related information across these different sources. However, as information in iDISK was collected from scientific sources, the complex medical jargon is a barrier for consumers’ comprehension. Objective: To assess how different approaches to simplify and represent dietary supplement information from iDISK will affect lay consumers’ comprehension.

    Methods: Using a crowdsourcing platform, we recruited participants to read dietary supplement information in four different representations from iDISK: (1) original text, (2) syntactic and lexical text simplification, (3) manual text simplification, and (4) a graph-based visualization. We then assessed how the different simplification and representation strategies affected consumers’ comprehension of dietary supplement information in terms of accuracy and response time to a set of comprehension questions.

    Results: With responses from 690 qualified participants, our experiments confirmed that the manual approach, as expected, had the best performance for both accuracy and response time to the comprehension questions, while the graph-based approach ranked the second outperforming other representations. In some cases, the graph-based representation outperformed the manual approach in terms of response time.

    Conclusions: A hybrid approach that combines text and graph-based representations might be needed to accommodate consumers’ different information needs and information seeking behavior.

    De Voedselconsumptiepeiling brengt in kaart wat Nederland eet en drinkt. De voedselconsumptiegegevens geven inzicht in de consumptie van voedingsmiddelen, de inname van macro- en microvoedingsstoffen, de inname van potentieel schadelijke chemische stoffen en in de ontwikkelingen hiervan (trends).

    De cijfers in deze tabel zijn afkomstig uit de Voedselconsumptiepeiling (VCP) 2019-2021 van het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM). Deze tabel bevat gegevens over de gebruikelijke inname van voedingsstoffen per dag van mensen in de leeftijd van 1 tot 80 jaar. De gegevens zijn uitgesplitst naar geslacht en leeftijd en daarnaast voor verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. Niet alle uitsplitsingen zijn beschikbaar, dan worden er lege regels getoond.     Er zijn 2 tabellen beschikbaar op statline over de inname van macro- en micronutriënten. Het verschil tussen deze 2 tabellen is dat de ene tabel de inname uit voedingsmiddelen en supplementen weergeeft en de andere tabel de inname alleen uit voedingsmiddelen. Daarbij kan nog worden opgemerkt dat in de tabel waarin supplementen wel zijn meegenomen alleen de relevante nutriënten zijn weergegeven. Dat wil zeggen: alleen die nutriënten worden weergegeven waaraan supplementen hebben bijgedragen. Het betreft daarbij de volgende nutriënten: Visvetzuren (EPA en DHA), Calcium, Koper, IJzer, Non haem ijzer, Magnesium, Selenium, Zink, Retinol, Retinol activiteit equivalenten, Vitamine B1, Vitamine B2, Vitamine B3, Vitamine B6, Folate equivalenten, Foliumzuur, Vitamine B12, Vitamine C, Vitamine D, Vitamine E, Jodium.

    De voedingsgegevens zijn verzameld onder circa 3500 kinderen en volwassenen met twee 24-uursvoedingsnavragen.     [English] 1. EXPLANATION The Food Consumption Survey charts the food consumption in the Netherlands. The food consumption data provide insight into consumption, the intake of macro and micronutrients, the intake of potential chemical substances and its changes in time.

    The figures in this table are from the Food Consumption Survey (VCP) 2019-2021 of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). This table contains data on the habitual intake of nutrients per day of people aged 1 to 80 years. The data are broken down by gender and age and different population groups. Not all the breakdowns are available, if not, then empty lines are shown in the table. The available breakdowns are: - Total population - Age in 2 groups - Sex in 2 groups - Age and Sex in 4 groups - Age and Sex in 12 groups - Education - Education broken down by sex - Education broken down by age in 2 groups - Education broken down by age and sex in 4 groups - Region - Region broken down by sex - Region broken down by age in 2 groups - Region broken down age and sex in 4 groups - Urbanisation - Urbanisation broken down by sex - Urbanisation broken down by age in 2 groups - Urbanisation broken down by age and sex in 4 groups - BMI - BMI broken down by sex - BMI broken down by age in 2 groups - BMI broken down by age and sex in 4 groups Another matter is that the age groups for intake of alcohol are based on age 12-80 years.

    There are 2 tables available on statline about the intake of macro- and micronutrients. The difference between these 2 tables is that the one shows the intake from foods and dietary supplements and the other table shows the intake from foods only. NB: In the table where supplements have been included only the relevant nutrients are shown. I.E: Only those nutrients are shown that have a contribution by supplements. This concerns the following nutrients: Fish fatty acids (EPA+DHA), Calcium, Copper, Iron, non-haeme iron, Magnesium, Selenium, Zinc, Retinol, Retinol activity equivalents, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B6, Folate equivalents, Folic acid artificially added, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Iodine.

    The data have been collected from around 3500 children and adults with two 24-hour dietary recalls. More information about the study can be found on the website www.wateetnederland.nl (see also publications on this website) or in the other tables on RIVM-Statline.

    The Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement (CPS-FSS) is the source of national and State-level statistics on food insecurity used in USDA's annual reports on household food security. The CPS is a monthly labor force survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Census Bureau for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Once each year, after answering the labor force questions, the same households are asked a series of questions (the Food Security Supplement) about food security, food expenditures, and use of food and nutrition assistance programs. Food security data have been collected by the CPS-FSS each year since 1995. Four data sets that complement those available from the Census Bureau are available for download on the ERS website. These are available as ASCII uncompressed or zipped files. The purpose and appropriate use of these additional data files are described below: 1) CPS 1995 Revised Food Security Status data--This file provides household food security scores and food security status categories that are consistent with procedures and variable naming conventions introduced in 1996. This includes the "common screen" variables to facilitate comparisons of prevalence rates across years. This file must be matched to the 1995 CPS Food Security Supplement public-use data file. 2) CPS 1998 Children's and 30-day Food Security data--Subsequent to the release of the April 1999 CPS-FSS public-use data file, USDA developed two additional food security scales to describe aspects of food security conditions in interviewed households not captured by the 12-month household food security scale. This file provides three food security variables (categorical, raw score, and scale score) for each of these scales along with household identification variables to allow the user to match this supplementary data file to the CPS-FSS April 1998 data file. 3) CPS 1999 Children's and 30-day Food Security data--Subsequent to the release of the April 1999 CPS-FSS public-use data file, USDA developed two additional food security scales to describe aspects of food security conditions in interviewed households not captured by the 12-month household food security scale. This file provides three food security variables (categorical, raw score, and scale score) for each of these scales along with household identification variables to allow the user to match this supplementary data file to the CPS-FSS April 1999 data file. 4) CPS 2000 30-day Food Security data--Subsequent to the release of the September 2000 CPS-FSS public-use data file, USDA developed a revised 30-day CPS Food Security Scale. This file provides three food security variables (categorical, raw score, and scale score) for the 30-day scale along with household identification variables to allow the user to match this supplementary data file to the CPS-FSS September 2000 data file. Food security is measured at the household level in three categories: food secure, low food security and very low food security. Each category is measured by a total count and as a percent of the total population. Categories and measurements are broken down further based on the following demographic characteristics: household composition, race/ethnicity, metro/nonmetro area of residence, and geographic region. The food security scale includes questions about households and their ability to purchase enough food and balanced meals, questions about adult meals and their size, frequency skipped, weight lost, days gone without eating, questions about children meals, including diversity, balanced meals, size of meals, skipped meals and hunger. Questions are also asked about the use of public assistance and supplemental food assistance. The food security scale is 18 items that measure insecurity. A score of 0-2 means a house is food secure, from 3-7 indicates low food security, and 8-18 means very low food security. The scale and the data also report the frequency with which each item is experienced. Data are available as .dat files which may be processed in statistical software or through the United State Census Bureau's DataFerret http://dataferrett.census.gov/. Data from 2010 onwards is available below and online. Data from 1995-2009 must be accessed through DataFerrett. DataFerrett is a data analysis and extraction tool to customize federal, state, and local data to suit your requirements. Through DataFerrett, the user can develop an unlimited array of customized spreadsheets that are as versatile and complex as your usage demands then turn those spreadsheets into graphs and maps without any additional software.     Description

    NSDD is a database with harmonised data from two population based projects ”Västerbotten Intervention Project” och ”MONICA in northern Sweden”. Information is collected by a validated, semi-quantitative, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Data collection is done by identical instrument and in the same manner in the two projects. The FFQ has three main sections: portion size indication for staple foods, intake frequencies, and dietary supplements. Some information on dietary and meal regimens is available. In addition to information on intake frequencies of single food items or food groups, estimated energy and nutrient intake and a selection of dietary indexes are available. Enheten för biobanksforskning (EBF) handhar databasen, medan Västerbottens läns landsting ansvarar för insamling och förvaring av biobanksmaterial. The Västerbotten Intervention Project (VIP) och MONICA are population based projects studying life habits in the population and to reduce the incidence of cardio metabolic diseases. Detailed information on the two projects can be found at their respective website. These are reached via http://www.biobank.umu.se/ The dataset includes data regarding intakes of food items, nutrients, calculated diet indexes and intake of food supplements. Data are collected through self-reported questionnaire. The dataset growths by approximately 5000 observations per year and the proportion with repeated observations increases. Clinical samples (plasma, serum and DNA) are not included in NSDD but handled separately, in a biobank (see http://www.biobank.umu.se/). By January 2016, the combined VIP-MONICA diet dataset includes 121,996 unique subjects (equal proportion men and women) with at least one visit and a diet recording. Of these 8.2% are excluded because of incomplete food intake data, extreme (highest and lowest 1%) food Intake levels (FIL), extreme energy intakes (lowest 1% and >5,000 kcal). Nearly 40% have a second 10-year follow up and 7% a third 10-year follow-up. Intakes are reported on a fixed 9-level scale: never, a few times/year, 1-3 times/month, 1 time/week, 2-3 times/week, 4-6 times/week, 1 time/day, 2-3 times/day, ≥4 times/day. Variables in the dataset: 64-84 food items, 65 nutrients including alcohol, 12 on supplements, 3 diet indexes, In addition, some hundred variables on medical status, socio-economy, tobacco use, physical activity, etc. can be linked from VIP and MONICA.

    This database was developed with support from the Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health for flavonoid intake studies. The database is a useful tool for flavonoid intake and health outcome studies for any population globally. It contains data for 29 individual flavonoid compounds in six subclasses of flavonoids for every food in a subset of 2,926 food items which provide the basis for the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS 4.1). Proanthocyanidins data are not included at the present time. For flavonoid intake data for the U.S. population based on NHANES 2007-08, please refer to the Food Surveys Research Group website.
