    Description

The Ice Cream Stores industry has been under significant strain in recent years due to compounding impacts of the pandemic, a rising cost of living and changing consumer preferences. Lockdowns and social distancing measures disrupted normal trading, with many establishments introducing delivery services to combat falling revenue. Since then, the rising cost of living and declining discretionary incomes have further shrunk revenue, as households have cut back on non-essential spending. Additionally, changing tastes towards products like gelato and frozen yoghurt, coupled with a growing focus on health and wellbeing, have necessitated introducing healthier ice cream alternatives like dairy-free and sugar-free options, presenting additional challenges for traditional ice cream stores. Increasing competition and rising purchase costs are also negatively impacting the industry's performance. The growth of gelato and frozen yoghurt franchises has eaten into incumbent ice cream franchises’ market share, while fast food outlets offering low-cost soft-serve ice cream options have also intensified competition. Rising costs of key raw materials like milk and sugar have resulted in shrinking profit margins. Overall, industry revenue is expected to decline at an annualised 3.4% over the five years through 2024-25, to total $421.2 million. This includes an anticipated 5.0% decline in 2024-25, as the cost-of-living crunch sees consumers continue to opt for inexpensive ice cream options. The industry is set for a change in fortunes, backed by optimistic consumer sentiment amid an improving Australian economy. Consequently, discretionary spending is projected to rise, propelling demand for ice cream. Despite this trend, intensifying competition from both internal and external sources poses a challenge. Nevertheless, as domestic and global sugar production grows, falling sugar prices are forecast to boost profit by lowering production costs. Lower costs could either pave the way for attractive pricing strategies to drive sales or contribute to improved profit margins. The buoyant industry outlook is set to coax more businesses into the industry, naturally increasing employment and wage expenses. Revenue is forecast to grow at an annualised 1.2% over the five years through 2029-30, to reach $447.7 million.

    Description

The Event Promotion and Management Services industry endured significant setbacks with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Government-mandated lockdowns and social distancing measures slashed the number of conferences and events, causing industry revenue to plummet in 2019-20 and 2020-21. As restrictions began to ease, the market displayed promising signs of recovery. People could once again attend sports matches and concerts, and social events could be hosted. Companies gradually resumed organising gatherings and households went back to purchasing event tickets, supporting a recovery in industry profitability. Despite fluctuations, improvements in business confidence over the past five years have fuelled demand for corporate conferences, functions and events. Even so, drops in household discretionary incomes have weighed on consumer spending on event tickets and other discretionary services. Overall, industry revenue is expected to have grown at an annualised 0.5% over the five years through 2024-25, to $11.1 billion. This includes an anticipated jump of 2.3% in 2024-25. The industry comprises various segments, including event management and promotion, ticketing and tourist information services. Demand for these services has seen a general upwards trend over recent years. Major consumer markets for these services include private firms promoting their products through events, industry associations holding conferences, government departments hosting community exhibitions and households buying tickets for events like music concerts, sports and tourist information centres. Although the industry has a broad base of businesses, TEG Pty Limited (via Ticketek) and Ticketmaster Australasia Pty Limited hold a dominant position in ticketing activities. In the years ahead, the industry is forecast to continue expanding. The prospects for expansion are positive as associations will host more events, providing members with a broader array of services. Likewise, higher household discretionary income and increasing business and consumer confidence will boost ticket sales and event expenditures. Industry revenue is projected to climb at an annualised 2.8% over the five years through 2029-30, to reach $12.7 billion. This optimistic outlook is set to attract more event management companies to the industry, supporting growth in participation and employment.

    Description

Ice cream manufacturers have enjoyed a period of sustained growth, with revenue anticipated to grow at an annualised 2.7% over the five years through 2024-25, to $1.7 billion. Ice cream is a discretionary good, which means that the Ice Cream Manufacturing industry’s performance depends on trends in real household discretionary income. During the pandemic, government support measures propelled household income and spending, boosting demand for ice cream and supporting revenue growth. The industry has felt the impacts of a collapse in discretionary income post-pandemic, with a fall over the three years through 2023-24 as government stimulus ended and inflation intensified. Although discretionary income is expected to improve slightly in 2024-25, cost-of-living pressures will continue to strain consumers’ budgets. Household spending cuts have led to reduced demand for ice cream products. With demand constrained, the industry’s revenue is expected to fall 5.3% in 2024-25. Ice cream ingredients, like milk and sugar, have grown exponentially in price over the past few years. Manufacturers have looked to pass on these elevated input costs to consumers, but major supermarkets’ significant buying power has forced some manufacturers to absorb the brunt of rising costs. This has led purchase costs to eat into revenue and profit. Elevated input costs have also resulted in sinking dairy product production, contributing to a dip in ice cream exports and growth in imports. Manufacturers have turned to new export markets to maintain their performance, especially South Korea, where export revenue for ice cream manufacturers has skyrocketed 111.2% over the past five years. South Australia will introduce a ban on advertising unhealthy food, including ice cream, on its public transit assets from 1 July 2025. With the potential for similar policies at the federal level, the industry’s advertising focus may shift to non-restrictive digital marketing platforms, starting in South Australia. Forecast relief from financial pressures on households is set to expand discretionary income in the coming years, raising demand for ice cream. With greater demand, revenue is projected to grow at an annualised 1.2% through the end of 2029-30, to $1.8 billion, with profitability following closely behind.
