    In 2022, the states with the highest death rates due to heart disease were Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Alabama. That year, there were around 257 deaths due to heart disease per 100,000 population in the state of Oklahoma. In comparison, the overall death rate from heart disease in the United States was 167 per 100,000 population. The leading cause of death in the United States Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 21 percent of all deaths in 2022. That year, cancer was the second leading cause of death, followed by unintentional injuries and COVID-19. In the United States, a person has a one in six chance of dying from heart disease. Death rates for heart disease are higher among men than women, but both have seen steady decreases in heart disease death rates since the 1950s. What are risk factors for heart disease? Although heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, the risk of heart disease can be decreased by avoiding known risk factors. Some of the leading preventable risk factors for heart disease include smoking, heavy alcohol use, physical inactivity, an unhealthy diet, and being overweight or obese. It is no surprise that the states with the highest rates of death from heart disease are also the states with the highest rates of heart disease risk factors. For example, Oklahoma, the state with the highest heart disease death rate, is also the state with the third-highest rate of obesity. Furthermore, Mississippi is the state with the highest levels of physical inactivity, and it has the second-highest heart disease death rate in the United States.

    This dataset of U.S. mortality trends since 1900 highlights trends in age-adjusted death rates for five selected major causes of death. Age-adjusted death rates (deaths per 100,000) after 1998 are calculated based on the 2000 U.S. standard population. Populations used for computing death rates for 2011–2017 are postcensal estimates based on the 2010 census, estimated as of July 1, 2010. Rates for census years are based on populations enumerated in the corresponding censuses. Rates for noncensus years between 2000 and 2010 are revised using updated intercensal population estimates and may differ from rates previously published. Data on age-adjusted death rates prior to 1999 are taken from historical data (see References below). Revisions to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) over time may result in discontinuities in cause-of-death trends.     In 2021, South Korea had the lowest rate of death from ischemic heart disease among OECD countries, with around 28 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. In comparison, there were around 395 deaths due to ischemic heart disease per 100,000 population in Lithuania. Cardiovascular disease worldwide Fatty deposits accumulating in the inner wall of the coronary artery which restrict blood flow to the heart cause ischemic heart disease (IHD) and can also precipitate heart attacks and strokes. Cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, heavy alcohol use, and unhealthy diet are more prevalent in Eastern European countries, contributing to a much higher burden of cardiovascular diseases and deaths. In Russia, the general public greatly underestimates the burden of cardiovascular diseases with the actual number of deaths over 40 percent higher than what people estimate. Prevention and intervention Invasive interventions for heart disease can include surgical procedures such as heart bypass surgery- where blood is diverted around clogged parts of major arteries- which ranges in cost around the world. Other medical interventions include the use of prescribed or over-the-counter drugs, such as prescription nitrates or beta blockers, or OTC medications like aspirin. Lifestyle factors to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels can help decrease risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases, including maintaining a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and smoking and alcohol cessation.

    This dataset documents cardiovascular disease (CVD) death rates, relative and absolute excess death rates, and trends. Specifically, this report presents county (or county equivalent) estimates of CVD death rates in 2000-2020, trends during 2010-2019, and relative and absolute excess death rates in 2020 by age group (ages 35–64 years, ages 65 years and older).     Description

    Standardised death rate per 100,000 persons for cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes and cancer.

    Cardiovascular Disease: In 2019, cardiovascular disease accounted for 43,249 deaths which was 25.5% of all deaths. Of these, there were 21,849 deaths for males and 21,400 deaths for females1.

    Cancer: The ABS advises that in 2019, the leading cause of death was Ischaemic heart disease (18,244 deaths), accounting for 10.8% of all deaths1. However, deaths from all cancers (neoplasms) combined accounted for 29.5% (49,967deaths) 1.

    Diabetes: In 2019, diabetes was Australia's seventh leading cause of death, accounting for 2.9% of all deaths. There were 4,967 deaths from diabetes, comprising 2,731 deaths for males and 2,236 deaths for females1.

    Respiratory Disease: In 2019, respiratory disease accounted for 16,275 deaths, representing 9.6% of all deaths. Of these, there were 8,145 deaths for males and 8,130 deaths for females1.

    Total deaths between ages 30 and 69: In 2019, there were 25,181 deaths from non-communicable diseases for persons aged between 30 and 69. This comprised of 15,133 deaths for males and 10,048 deaths for females.

    The indicator measures the standardised death rate of chronic diseases. Chronic diseases included in the indicator are malignant neoplasms, diabetes mellitus, ischaemic heart diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic lower respiratory diseases and chronic liver diseases (International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes C00 to C97, E10 to E14, I20 to I25, I60 to I69 and J40 to J47). Death due to chronic diseases is considered premature if it occurs before the age of 65. The rate is calculated by dividing the number of people under 65 dying due to a chronic disease by the total population under 65. Data on causes of death (COD) refer to the underlying cause which - according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) - is "the disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury". COD data are derived from death certificates. The medical certification of death is an obligation in all Member States. The data are presented as standardised death rates, meaning they are adjusted to a standard age distribution in order to measure death rates independently of different age structures of populations. This approach improves comparability over time and between countries. The standardised death rates used here are calculated on the basis of the standard European population referring to the residents of the countries.

    Description

    This dataset documents rates and trends in heart disease and stroke mortality. Specifically, this report presents county (or county equivalent) estimates of heart disease and stroke death rates in 2000-2019 and trends during two intervals (2000-2010, 2010-2019) by age group (ages 35–64 years, ages 65 years and older), race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native, non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islander, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, non-Hispanic White), and sex (women, men). The rates and trends were estimated using a Bayesian spatiotemporal model and a smoothed over space, time, and demographic group. Rates are age-standardized in 10-year age groups using the 2010 US population. Data source: National Vital Statistics System.

    Description

    This data presents national-level provisional maternal mortality rates based on a current flow of mortality and natality data in the National Vital Statistics System. Provisional rates which are an early estimate of the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, are shown as of the date specified and may not include all deaths and births that occurred during a given time period (see Technical Notes). A maternal death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes. In this data visualization, maternal deaths are those deaths with an underlying cause of death assigned to International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) code numbers A34, O00–O95, and O98–O99. The provisional data include reported 12 month-ending provisional maternal mortality rates overall, by age, and by race and Hispanic origin. Provisional maternal mortality rates presented in this data visualization are for “12-month ending periods,” defined as the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births occurring in the 12-month period ending in the month indicated. For example, the 12-month ending period in June 2020 would include deaths and births occurring from July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020. Evaluation of trends over time should compare estimates from year to year (June 2020 and June 2021), rather than month to month, to avoid overlapping time periods. In the visualization and in the accompanying data file, rates based on death counts less than 20 are suppressed in accordance with current NCHS standards of reliability for rates. Death counts between 1-9 in the data file are suppressed in accordance with National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) confidentiality standards. Provisional data presented on this page will be updated on a quarterly basis as additional records are received. Previously released estimates are revised to include data and record updates received since the previous release. As a result, the reliability of estimates for a 12-month period ending with a specific month will improve with each quarterly release and estimates for previous time periods may change as new data and updates are received.

In 2022, the states with the highest death rates due to heart disease were Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Alabama. That year, there were around 257 deaths due to heart disease per 100,000 population in the state of Oklahoma. In comparison, the overall death rate from heart disease in the United States was 167 per 100,000 population. The leading cause of death in the United States Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 21 percent of all deaths in 2022. That year, cancer was the second leading cause of death, followed by unintentional injuries and COVID-19. In the United States, a person has a one in six chance of dying from heart disease. Death rates for heart disease are higher among men than women, but both have seen steady decreases in heart disease death rates since the 1950s. What are risk factors for heart disease? Although heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, the risk of heart disease can be decreased by avoiding known risk factors. Some of the leading preventable risk factors for heart disease include smoking, heavy alcohol use, physical inactivity, an unhealthy diet, and being overweight or obese. It is no surprise that the states with the highest rates of death from heart disease are also the states with the highest rates of heart disease risk factors. For example, Oklahoma, the state with the highest heart disease death rate, is also the state with the third-highest rate of obesity. Furthermore, Mississippi is the state with the highest levels of physical inactivity, and it has the second-highest heart disease death rate in the United States.
