Analysis of the divorce rate by the duration of marriage showed that almost one-third of the divorces in 2023 occurred within the first five years of marriage in Turkey. Additionally, 21.7 percent of the finalized divorces were between couples that had been married from six to 10 years.

The number of divorces in Turkey fluctuated, though mostly increased from 2001 to 2022. Over this time period the number of divorces in Turkey has increased from approximately 92 thousand in 2001 to almost 181 thousand in 2022. In 2023, the figures dropped to nearly 172 thousand.

The most pressing reason for divorce for both men and women was the irresponsible and indifferent behavior of the spouse in Turkey in 2021. Additionally, more than 19 percent of the women gave cheating as the reason for their divorce, while for men, the share was just 8 percent.

In 2020, the number of new marriages registered was the lowest at 488 thousand in Turkey during the coronavirus pandemic. The highest number of new marriages was recorded at 641 thousand in 2008 in the country. In 2023, over 565,000 new marriages were recorded.
