In 2023, DIY retailer hagebaumarkt had the most stores in Germany with 458, followed by Eurobaustof and Bauvista. Other popular chains included Obi and Fishbull. If you want something done The German DIY and home improvement sector is dynamic, with stores enjoying popularity and demand among consumers. In fact, the number of people who sometimes engage in DIY activities in their leisure time has been growing. Home improvement retail as such is expected to generate increasing revenues in the 2020s. The DIY market boomed in particular during the pandemic, as the population was restricted in terms of mobility and activities, often opting for gardening and home improvement tasks as a way to pass the time. While the restrictions have now been lifted for a while, inflation levels in Germany amid the current energy crisis led to increased prices across industries. Consumers might therefore still decide to buy materials for their DIY, rather than hire someone or buy a new item. Future challenges Total DIY and home improvement store numbers in Germany have been decreasing in recent years, which may pose challenges for the brick-and-mortar business. One of the reasons for this development is the expansion of e-commerce transactions in the sector, as the ongoing, long-term spread of online shopping is affecting all industries. In fact, among the main advantages of online shopping listed by Germans, the leading ones were saving time, easier comparison of prices, and lower prices in general.

    Description

In fiscal year 2023, the sales value of do-it-yourself (DIY) retail stores in Japan amounted to just below four trillion Japanese yen. In the last decade, DIY retailers generated stable sales of around four trillion yen, with a peak recorded in 2020 as self-made items grew in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic. DIY in the Japanese retail market DIY retailers are commonly known as “home centers” in Japan, which are comparable to hardware stores overseas. Unlike traditional small-sized hardware stores that are commonly family-owned businesses, home improvement centers boast a larger product variety, serving as a one-stop solution for professional handymen and laypersons. Stores stock primarily non-food products, out of which tools and materials used in DIY-related crafts are the main sales segment. Other product segments for home improvement projects include household utensils, gardening products, and electric appliances. DIY stores are categorized as specialty retailers in Japan and represent only a minor segment within the domestic retail sector. Nonetheless, they cater to other consumer demands outside of DIY activities as well, particularly as a major sales channel in the pet market. Calming the heated competition The first large-scale home improvement centers in Japan were opened in the post-war era and within the last decades, the size of the store network grew steadily as it reached a record high of close to five thousand stores in 2022. While many businesses limited their operation to a small number of stores within prefectural or regional borders, the leading DIY stores like Komeri, DCM Holdings, and Kohnan Shoji eyed a nationwide strategy. Through the acquisition of smaller competitors and new openings particularly around the borders of rural areas, the market leaders further varied their brand portfolio by specializing in certain product segments and varying store sizes to cater to different demands.

Global DIY Home Improvement Market Drivers

The market drivers for the Diy Home Improvement Market can be influenced by various factors. These may include:

Growing Homeownership Rates: The demand for do-it-yourself home repair projects is being driven by rising homeownership rates, especially among younger generations and millennials. To add personality to their homes and raise the value of their properties, homeowners are more likely to do do-it-yourself modifications, repairs, and renovations.

Desire for Cost Savings: Compared to engaging professional contractors, DIY home remodeling projects can save costs. DIYers frequently decide to forego hiring labor services in favor of saving money on supplies by buying and installing everything themselves.
Availability of Online Tutorials and Resources: With the growth of DIY tutorials, instructional videos, and online resources, customers have easy access to important advice and ideas for home renovation tasks. Social media channels, DIY blogs, and YouTube give homeowners the freedom to take on projects on their own and learn new skills.

Convenience and Flexibility: Do-it-yourself home remodeling gives homeowners the freedom to work when and how they want, making it convenient and flexible. For those who are busy, do-it-yourself tasks are a desirable alternative because they may be completed on the weekends or in the evenings without depending on contractors’ availability.

Empowerment and Creative Expression: Homeowners can take pleasure in their achievements, personalize their living environments, and express their creativity through do-it-yourself home remodeling projects. Doing work around the house gives one a sense of accomplishment and empowerment and strengthens their bond with their surroundings and house.

Sustainability & Environmental Awareness: The need for eco-friendly do-it-yourself home renovation projects is being driven by growing concerns about environmental sustainability. Reusing, upcycling, and sustainable materials are popular choices among do-it-yourselfers who want to cut down on waste and their projects’ environmental effect.

Renovation at Home TV Series and Media Influence: Popular home improvement TV series, periodicals, and internet resources provide homeowners with innovative concepts and styles that pique their interest in do-it-yourself projects. Media coverage of interior design and renovation shapes consumer tastes and promotes do-it-yourself projects.

Trend Towards Home Comfort and Wellness: The COVID-19 pandemic has sped up the trend toward home comfort and wellness, encouraging homeowners to make do-it-yourself renovations to improve their living spaces. Home organization, comfort enhancements, and indoor/outdoor living areas are DIY projects that fit with changing lifestyle requirements.
DIY-friendly Product Innovation: Pre-assembled kits, simple-to-install fixtures, and streamlined instructions are just a few examples of the user-friendly, DIY-friendly products that manufacturers and retailers are increasingly offering to appeal to the do-it-yourself market. For customers with different skill levels, these goods increase the accessibility and attainable nature of DIY projects.

    Description

Hardware and home improvement stores’ revenue is forecast to rise at a compound annual rate of 1.4% over the five years through 2024 to reach €155.8 billion. Private spending on home renovation and maintenance, construction activity, environmental awareness and the number of households each play their part in determining sales. The EU and the UK enjoyed a housing market boom prior to 2023, when soaring mortgage rates deterred many from buying a new house. While demand for outfitting new houses is down, more Europeans are turning to repair, maintenance and renovation work on their existing properties, helping to raise sales of hardware and home improvement products. This trend accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people confined to their homes looked to refresh their surroundings and found themselves with more time to dedicate to DIY projects. Hardware and home improvement stores were deemed by many governments as essential businesses, allowing them to remain open during the lockdowns. In 2024, revenue growth is expected to be constrained by the cost-of-living crisis. Shoppers are increasingly price-sensitive and many are thinking twice before spending in response to intense inflationary pressures, cutting sales for many hardware and home improvement stores. Price inflation is expected to outweigh falling sales volumes, leading to revenue growth of 1% in 2024. Over the five years through 2029, hardware and home improvement stores’ revenue is slated to climb at a compound annual rate of 1.5% to reach €168 billion. Ever-growing levels of environmental awareness among Europeans will drive strong demand for sustainably sourced and energy-efficient products, like reclaimed wood and lithium-ion battery-powered hand tools. Competition from online-only retailers will continue to heat up, forcing hardware and home improvement stores to expand their in-store offerings to attract customers – augmented reality stations where shoppers can visualise their new products in their homes are one way retailers can try to do this.
