The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the largest stock exchange in the world, with an equity market capitalization of just below 32 trillion U.S. dollars as of January 2025. The following three exchanges were the NASDAQ, Shanghai Stock Exchange, and the Japan Exchange Group. What is a stock exchange? A stock exchange is a marketplace where stockbrokers, traders, buyers, and sellers can trade in equities products. The largest exchanges have thousands of listed companies. These companies sell shares of their business, giving the general public the opportunity to invest in them. The oldest stock exchange worldwide is the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, founded in the late sixteenth century. Other functions of a stock exchange Since these are publicly traded companies, every firm listed on a stock exchange has had an initial public offering (IPO). The largest IPOs can raise billions of dollars in equity for the firm involved. Related to stock exchanges are derivatives exchanges, where stock options, futures contracts, and other derivatives can be traded.

    Description

The US dollar index of February 2025 was higher than it was in 2024, although below the peak in late 2022. This reveals itself in a historical graphic on the past 50 years, measuring the relative strength of the U.S. dollar. This metric is different from other FX graphics that compare the U.S. dollar against other currencies. The history of the DXY Index The index shown here – often referred to with the code DXY, or USDX – measures the value of the U.S. dollar compared to a basket of six other foreign currencies. This basket includes the euro, the Swiss franc, the Japanese yen, the Canadian dollar, the British pound, and the Swedish króna. The index was created in 1973, after the arrival of the petrodollar and the dissolution of the Bretton Woods Agreement. Today, most of these currencies remain connected to the United States' largest trade partners. The relevance of the DXY Index The index focuses on trade and the strength of the U.S. dollar against specific currencies. It less on inflation or devaluation, which is measured in alternative metrics like the Big Mac Index. Indeed, as the methodology behind the DXY Index has only been updated once – when the euro arrived in 1999 – some argue this composition is not accurate to the current state of the world. The price development of the U.S. dollar affects many things, including commodity prices in general.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ are the largest stock exchange operators worldwide. What is a stock exchange? The first modern publicly traded company was the Dutch East Industry Company, which sold shares to the general public to fund expeditions to Asia. Since then, groups of companies have formed exchanges in which brokers and dealers can come together and make transactions in one space. Stock market indices group companies trading on a given exchange, giving an idea of how they evolve in real time. Appeal of stock ownership Over half of adults in the United States are investing money in the stock market. Stocks are an attractive investment because the possible return is higher than offered by other financial instruments.

The General Electric Company’s stock cost 101.86 U.S. dollars per share at the end of 2023, a significant increase compared to the closing of the previous year. GE is an international conglomerate operating in various industry sectors, with aviation, power, oil & gas and healthcare being the main sources of revenue for the company. GE specific statistics For a more precise picture on the status of GE, the company’s balance sheet gives insight. GE’s revenue has remained relatively stable, but the number of employees has decreased in the past few years. This suggests that the company, though maintaining its income, is cutting costs due to worries over profitability. The drop in the stock price over recent years could be the public’s uncertainty over the company’s future, or it could point to real struggles within the firm.

The software-as-a-service (SaaS) industry continues to dominate the tech landscape, with Salesforce leading the pack among public SaaS companies on U.S. stock exchanges. As of November 2024, Salesforce boasts a market capitalization of over 310 billion U.S. dollars, highlighting the immense value investors place on subscription-based software models. This trend reflects the growing preference of businesses worldwide for flexible, scalable solutions over traditional upfront software investments. Global growth and regional disparities The SaaS market is poised for significant expansion across all regions, with Latin America emerging as the fastest-growing market. Projections indicate that Latin America's cloud and SaaS revenue will surge from six billion U.S. dollars in 2021 to 20 billion U.S. dollars by 2026, representing a compound annual growth rate of 28 percent. This rapid growth underscores the increasing global adoption of SaaS solutions, particularly in emerging markets. Adoption trends and security concerns SaaS adoption varies by company size, with smaller firms leading the charge. In 2023, companies with 1–500 employees reported a nearly 70 percent adoption rate, compared to just over 50 percent for large enterprises with more than 10,000 staff. However, as SaaS usage grows, so do security concerns. Identity and access governance topped the list of security worries with 43 percent of respondents in 2023, followed closely by third-party application access and permissions at 40 percent. These concerns highlight the need for robust security measures as businesses increasingly rely on SaaS solutions.

As of January 2025, the SSE Composite Index had closed at 3,250.6 points. The index reflects the performance of all stocks traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, including both boards, the main board, and the Star market. SSE still number one In the greater Chinese region, the stock exchange in Shanghai was the largest, beating the bourses in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. In 2023, the Shanghai Stock Exchange recorded a market capitalization of over 6.5 trillion. Not only market capitalization was a unique attribute, but the Shanghai Stock Exchange was also home to the most valuable stock in mainland China, which was the baijiu producer Moutai Kweichow. Limited access Despite its size, the exchange in Shanghai only grants limited access to overseas investors. The bourse listed A-shares and B-shares. While A-shares are denominated in yuan and almost exclusively available for domestic traders, the prices of B-shares are in U.S. dollars and available for overseas investors as well. In addition, the bourse offers access to foreign investors through a trading accreditation which is supervised by the Chinese authorities. However, these tight controls are the reason why Hong Kong, despite its lower relative market capitalization, remains an important gateway to capital for mainland Chinese companies.

Ripple - or XRP - prices surged in 2021, but went down significantly as 2022 progressed. As of March 26, 2025, one XRP token was worth 2.35 U.S. dollars. Ethereum's price, for example, kept on reaching new all-time highs, a feat not performed by XRP. Indeed, XRP's more price spikes followed relatively late - only occurring in early 2021, against late 2020 for most other cryptos - after the US SEC filed a legal complaint against Ripple in November 2020. This legal action caused the XRP price to plummet from around 0.70 U.S. dollars to 0.20 U.S. dollars.Ripple versus XRP: two become oneTechnically speaking, Ripple is not a cryptocurrency. Renamed from a protocol called OpenCoin in 2013, Ripple facilitates open-source payments. XRP, on the other hand, is the cryptocurrency that runs on this network. In that sense, Ripple and XRP have a similar symbiosis to each other like the Ethereum network and its cryptocurrency Ether. Unlike Ethereum - whose price changes are connected to the world of Decentralized Finance or DeFI - Ripple/XRP mostly looks at developments on cross-border payments for companies. In 2020, companies worldwide began to favor fintech solutions for future B2B solutions and, in a way, Ripple is an extension of that. What affects the price of Ripple?Ripple is mostly active in Southeast Asia - a region with a splintered payment landscape and that heavily investigates its own types of state-issued cryptocurrency to make cross-border payments a lot easier. Price spikes tend to follow after news on this topic in this specific region. In 2019, for example, the XRP price grew after Japan and South Korea began testing to reduce time and costs for transferring international funds between the two countries. In March 2021, Ripple announced that it had agreed to acquire 40 percent of Malaysian cross-border payments firm Tranglo to meet growing demand in Southeast Asia.

    Description

Silver futures contracts to be settled in December 2028 were trading on U.S. markets at around 34 U.S. dollars per troy ounce on June 20, 2023. This is above the price of 30.44 U.S. dollars per troy ounce for contracts to be settled in May 2024, indicating silver traders expect the price of silver to decrease over the next five years. Silver futures are contracts that effectively lock in a price for an amount of silver to be purchased at a time in the future, which can then be traded on markets. Futures markets therefore provide an indicator of how investors think a commodities market will develop in the future.
