The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is the most comprehensive global database of marine and terrestrial protected areas, updated on a monthly basis, and is one of the key global biodiversity data sets being widely used by scientists, businesses, governments, International secretariats and others to inform planning, policy decisions and management. The WDPA is a joint project between UN Environment and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The compilation and management of the WDPA is carried out by UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), in collaboration with governments, non-governmental organisations, academia and industry. There are monthly updates of the data which are made available online through the Protected Planet website where the data is both viewable and downloadable. Data and information on the world's protected areas compiled in the WDPA are used for reporting to the Convention on Biological Diversity on progress towards reaching the Aichi Biodiversity Targets (particularly Target 11), to the UN to track progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, to some of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) core indicators, and other international assessments and reports including the Global Biodiversity Outlook, as well as for the publication of the United Nations List of Protected Areas. Every two years, UNEP-WCMC releases the Protected Planet Report on the status of the world's protected areas and recommendations on how to meet international goals and targets. Many platforms are incorporating the WDPA to provide integrated information to diverse users, including businesses and governments, in a range of sectors including mining, oil and gas, and finance. For example, the WDPA is included in the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool, an innovative decision support tool that gives users easy access to up-to-date information that allows them to identify biodiversity risks and opportunities within a project boundary. The reach of the WDPA is further enhanced in services developed by other parties, such as the Global Forest Watch and the Digital Observatory for Protected Areas, which provide decision makers with access to monitoring and alert systems that allow whole landscapes to be managed better. Together, these applications of the WDPA demonstrate the growing value and significance of the Protected Planet initiative.

Ecological footprint calculated in number of planets per capita. The method is based on the regional ecological footprint, as calculated by the IUU IdF (Nov 2005). Within the 5 sectors considered in the calculation: food, services, goods, mobility and housing, the latter two have been recalculated on the basis of communal data. The property sector has been allocated with a weighting according to the resources of the communal population. The other two sectors were distributed in proportion to the population. Description

The aim of this paper is to investigate the re-use of research data deposited in digital data archive in the social sciences. The study examines the quantity, type, and purpose of data downloads by analyzing enriched user log data collected from Swiss data archive. The findings show that quantitative datasets are downloaded increasingly from the digital archive and that downloads focus heavily on a small share of the datasets. The most frequently downloaded datasets are survey datasets collected by research organizations offering possibilities for longitudinal studies. Users typically download only one dataset, but a group of heavy downloaders form a remarkable share of all downloads. The main user group downloading data from the archive are students who use the data in their studies. Furthermore, datasets downloaded for research purposes often, but not always, serve to be used in scholarly publications. Enriched log data from data archives offer an interesting macro level perspective on the use and users of the services and help understanding the increasing role of repositories in the social sciences. The study provides insights into the potential of collecting and using log data for studying and evaluating data archive use.

    Description

This land cover data set is derived from the original raster based Globcover global archive. It has been post-processed to generate a vector version at national extent with the LCCS regional legend (22 classes worldwide). The database can be analyzed in the GLCN software Advanced Database Gateway (ADG), which provides a user-friendly interface and advanced functionalities to breakdown the LCCS classes in their classifiers for further aggregations and analysis.

The data set is intended for free public access.

The shape file's attributes contain the following fields: -Area (sqm) -Perimeter (m) -ID -Gridcode (Globcover cell value) -LCCCode (unique LCCS code)

You can download a zip archive containing: -the shape file (.shp) -the ArcGis layer file with global legend (.lyr) -the ArcView 3 legend file (.avl) -the LCCS legend table (.xls)

    Supplemental Information:

This land cover product is a vector version (ESRI shape) of the Globcover archive that was published in 2008 as result of an initiative launched in 2004 by the European Space Agency (ESA). Globcover is currently the most recent (2005) and resoluted (300 m) datasets on land cover globally. Given the need of this valuable information for environmental studies, natural resources management and policy formulation, through activities of the Global Land Cover Network (GLCN) programme, the Globcover has been reprocessed to generate databases at national extent that can be analyzed through the Advanced Database Gateway software (ADG) by GLCN. ADG is a cross-cutting interrogation software that allows the easy and fast recombination of land cover polygons according to the individual end-user requirements. Aggregated land cover classes can be generated not only by name, but also using the set of existing classifiers. ADG uses land cover data with a Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) legend. The ADG software is available for download on the GLCN web site at http://www.glcn.org/sof_7_en.jsp

    Contact points:

    Metadata Contact: FAO-Data

    Resource Contact: Antonio Martucci

    Data lineage:

This land cover database is provided as ESRI shape file (vector format) and derives from reprocessing the raster based global archive, Globcover. Globcover database has undergone the following process: a) vectoralization at the national extent using ESRI ArcGis (arcinfo) 9.3; b) topological reconstruction (custom AML scripts launched inside ArcGis-arcinfo 9.3); c) simplification of areas according to a minimum mapping unit of 0.1 skim (10 ha) (custom AML scripts launched inside ArcGis-arcinfo 9.3); application of the FAO/UNEP Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) legend (24 classes globally); final processing to assure full compatibility with the GLCN software Advanced Database Gateway (ADG).

    Description

This downloadable data package consists of location and facility identification information from EPA's Facility Registry Service (FRS) for all sites that are available in the FRS individual feature layers. The layers comprise the FRS major program databases, including: Assessment Cleanup and Redevelopment Exchange System (ACRES) : brownfields sites ; Air Facility System (AFS) : stationary sources of air pollution ; ICIS-AIR (AIR) : stationary sources of air pollution; Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) : schools data on Indian land; Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) facilities; Clean Air Markets Division Business System (CAMDBS) : market-based air pollution control programs; Comprehensive Environmental Response, Superfund Enterprise Management System (SEMS): hazardous waste sites; Integrated Compliance Information System (ICIS) : integrated enforcement and compliance information; National Compliance Database (NCDB) : Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA); National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) module of ICIS : NPDES surface water permits; Radiation Information Database (RADINFO) : radiation and radioactivity facilities; RACT/BACT/LAER Clearinghouse (RBLC) : best available air pollution technology requirements; Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Information System (RCRAInfo) : tracks generators, transporters, treaters, storers, and disposers of hazardous waste; Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) : certain industries that use, manufacture, treat, or transport more than 650 toxic chemicals; Emission Inventory System (EIS) : inventory of large stationary sources and voluntarily-reported smaller sources of air point pollution emitters; countermeasure (SPCC) and facility response plan (FRP) subject facilities; Electronic Greenhouse Gas Reporting Tool (E-GGRT) : large greenhouse gas emitters; Emissions and; Generation Resource Integrated Database (EGRID) : power plants. The Facility Registry Service (FRS) identifies and geospatially locates facilities, sites or places subject to environmental regulations or of environmental interest. Using vigorous verification and data management procedures, FRS integrates facility data from EPA's national program systems, other federal agencies, and State and tribal master facility records and provides EPA with a centrally managed, single source of comprehensive and authoritative information on facilities. This data set contains the FRS facilities that link to the programs listed above once the program data has been integrated into the FRS database. Additional information on FRS is available at the EPA website https://www.epa.gov/enviro/facility-registry-service-frs. Included in this package are a file geodatabase, Esri ArcMap map document and an XML file of this metadata record. Full FGDC metadata records for each layer are contained in the database.

Here, we've processed the data to facilitate analytics. This processed version has three components:

    1. Original versions of the data

The original versions of the 2014, 2015, 2016 data are available in the "raw" directory of the download and "../input/raw" on Kaggle Scripts. Search for "dictionaries" on this page to find the data dictionaries describing the individual raw files.

    2. Combined CSV files that contain

In the top level directory of the download ("../input" on Kaggle Scripts), there are six CSV files that contain the combined at across all years:

    • BenefitsCostSharing.csv
    • BusinessRules.csv
    • Network.csv
    • PlanAttributes.csv
    • Rate.csv
    • ServiceArea.csv

Additionally, there are two CSV files that facilitate joining data across years:

    • Crosswalk2015.csv - joining 2014 and 2015 data
    • Crosswalk2016.csv - joining 2015 and 2016 data

    3. SQLite database

The "database.sqlite" file contains tables corresponding to each of the processed CSV files.

The code to create the processed version of this data is available on GitHub.
