    Description

Data files containing detailed information about vehicles in the UK are also available, including make and model data.

Some tables have been withdrawn and replaced. The table index for this statistical series has been updated to provide a full map between the old and new numbering systems used in this page.

The Department for Transport is committed to continuously improving the quality and transparency of our outputs, in line with the Code of Practice for Statistics. In line with this, we have recently concluded a planned review of the processes and methodologies used in the production of Vehicle licensing statistics data. The review sought to seek out and introduce further improvements and efficiencies in the coding technologies we use to produce our data and as part of that, we have identified several historical errors across the published data tables affecting different historical periods. These errors are the result of mistakes in past production processes that we have now identified, corrected and taken steps to eliminate going forward.

Most of the revisions to our published figures are small, typically changing values by less than 1% to 3%. The key revisions are:

    Licensed Vehicles (2014 Q3 to 2016 Q3)

We found that some unlicensed vehicles during this period were mistakenly counted as licensed. This caused a slight overstatement, about 0.54% on average, in the number of licensed vehicles during this period.

3.5 - 4.25 tonnes Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) Classification

Since 2023, ZEVs weighing between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes have been classified as light goods vehicles (LGVs) instead of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). We have now applied this change to earlier data and corrected an error in table VEH0150. As a result, the number of newly registered HGVs has been reduced by:

    • 3.1% in 2024

    • 2.3% in 2023

    • 1.4% in 2022

    Table VEH0156 (2018 to 2023)

Table VEH0156, which reports average CO₂ emissions for newly registered vehicles, has been updated for the years 2018 to 2023. Most changes are minor (under 3%), but the e-NEDC measure saw a larger correction, up to 15.8%, due to a calculation error. Other measures (WLTP and Reported) were less notable, except for April 2020 when COVID-19 led to very few new registrations which led to greater volatility in the resultant percentages.

Neither these specific revisions, nor any of the others introduced, have had a material impact on the statistics overall, the direction of trends nor the key messages that they previously conveyed.

Specific details of each revision made has been included in the relevant data table notes to ensure transparency and clarity. Users are advised to review these notes as part of their regular use of the data to ensure their analysis accounts for these changes accordingly.

If you have questions regarding any of these changes, please contact the Vehicle statistics team.

    How to use CSV files

CSV files can be used either as a spreadsheet (using Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet packages) or digitally using software packages and languages (for example, R or Python).

When using as a spreadsheet, there will be no formatting, but the file can still be explored like our publication tables. Due to their size, older software might not be able to open the entire file.

    Description

In March 2020 more than ****** mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEV) were sold in the United Kingdom. The Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) tends to issue new registration plates in March and September and hence, registration figures frequently soar in these months.

The number of cars with alternative fuels grows

Unlike plug-in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, mild hybrid electric vehicles are included in the segment of petrol and diesel-fueled cars in the SMMT's latest publications. This fact notwithstanding, vehicles with hybrid-electric propulsion held a market share of just under ***** percent in 2020. At the same time, the number of petrol and diesel-fueled cars registered is expected to fall to as low as *********** units in 2020. There is a shift away from internal combustion engines Environmental regulations and the Volkswagen diesel scandal are probable causes for the decline of diesel and petrol car registrations in the United Kingdom. Other reasons include incentives to go electric and improvements in the charging infrastructure. The variety of models available in the market is also on the rise.

    Description

The roadside survey is a survey of vehicles passing observation points on the UK road network. It uses automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras to capture registration marks at 256 sites during June each year (or every other from 2011 onwards).

The data are primarily used to create the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) evasion estimates, MOT non-compliance estimates and foreign-registered vehicles in traffic estimates.

These files present anonymised individual vehicle observation information by matching the captured registration mark with data held in the DVLA database. The files do not include registration mark, precise observation data / location, keeper name or keeper address details.

The data will be of use to anyone who wishes to understand the mix of vehicle types using British roads.

    Description

Information on motor vehicles that were registered for the first time during quarter 2 (April to June) 2015.

The statistics are derived from data held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), which administers vehicle registration and licensing records in the United Kingdom (Great Britain prior to July 2014).

    During April to June 2015:

    • 789,000 vehicles were registered for the first time in Great Britain during April to June 2015. This was 9% up on 2014, but still 3% lower than in the peak year of 2003
    • a total of 6,527 new ultra-low emission vehicles were registered for the first time (in the UK), up 138% from the same period in 2014
    • average CO2 emissions from new cars registered was 122 g/km. This was 3.0% lower than in the same quarter of 2014

At the end of June 2015, there were:

    • 36.3 million vehicles registered for use on the roads in Great Britain, up 1.2% on one year previously

    Description

Statistics on motor vehicles that were registered for the first time during July to September 2021 and those that were licensed at the end of September 2021.

Recent trends in new vehicle registrations have been heavily affected by the measures implemented from March 2020 onwards to limit the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

During July to September 2021, there were:

    • 542,000 vehicles registered for the first time in Great Britain
    • 83,000 ultra low emission vehicles registered for the first time in Great Britain

At the end of September 2021, there were:

    • 39.2 million licensed vehicles in Great Britain

    Geographical coverage: United Kingdom

Information broken down by: Data available by local authority on request, published quarterly.

    Latest data

In the second quarter of 2015 (April to June), 6,527 new ultra-low emission vehicles were registered for the first time in the UK.

QuarterNew UK registrations of ultra-low emission vehicles
    2014 April to June2,746
    2015 April to June6,527
    Percentage change+138%

The 6,527 ultra-low emission vehicles registered for the first time in quarter 2 2015 represents an increase of 138% from the figure of 2,746 in the same quarter of the previous year. Most of these vehicles use electric engines, so the Plug-In Car and Plug-In Van Grants introduced by the Department for Transport in January 2011 and February 2012 respectively, and an increase in the supply of electric and plug-in hybrid cars to the UK market will have contributed to this increase. A number of new models came onto the market in 2014.

    Background information

The Department for Transport uses the term ‘ultra-low emission vehicles’ to refer to vehicles with significantly lower levels of tailpipe emissions than conventional vehicles. In practice, the term currently refers to electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Vehicles that use non-fossil fuel propulsion have zero tailpipe emissions. For other propulsion types, only vehicles with tailpipe emissions below 75 grams per kilometre are included. The figures are produced from DVLA’s new registration system and only vehicles being registered in Great Britain or Northern Ireland for the first time are included.

There is a high level of seasonal variation in new vehicle registrations (for example higher sales when registration plates change in September and April), therefore it is misleading to compare data for consecutive quarters. Comparisons should be made with the same quarter of previous years
