The total number of residential building approvals in the private sector in Australia reached around 15,620 in February 2025. Among all building approvals for dwellings that month, approximately 9,135 were for houses.

Private House Approvals in Australia increased to 1.10 percent in July from -1.90 percent in June of 2025. This dataset includes a chart with historical data for Australia Private House Approvals.

Provides the number and value of dwelling units approved by sector (public/private) and by state, number and value of new houses, new other residential dwelling units approved by type of building, and the number and value of non-residential building jobs approved by type of building (i.e. by function such as 'retail and wholesale trade', 'offices') and value ranges. State data includes the number of private sector houses approved; number and value of new other residential dwellings by type of building such as flats, units or apartments in a building of one or two storeys; number and value of non-residential building jobs by type of building and sector; and for Greater Capital City Statistical Areas, the total number of dwelling units approved broken down by Houses, Dwellings Excluding Houses and Total Dwelling Units. Seasonally adjusted and trend estimates by state are included for the number of dwelling units and value of building approved. The quarterly value of building approved is shown in chain volume measure terms. Small geographic area data cubes are presented for Statistical Areas Level 2 and Local Government Areas. Small area data cubes will be released in an "Additional information" release five business days after the main publication.

The dashboard was created following a Council direction to monitor both Planning Act application approvals and building permits issued for new dwellings. Since Q1 2023, City staff have been reporting these figures quarterly to the Planning and Housing Committee in the Residential Dwelling Approvals Pipeline as a PDF. The new housing approvals dashboard replaces the Residential Dwelling Approvals Pipeline PDF reports and presents data in a more accessible, engaging, and user-friendly format that is more readily available to residents, developers, and housing stakeholders across the city. The housing approvals dashboard indicators reflect the full housing development pipeline, from planning approvals to building permits, dwelling construction starts, dwelling construction completions, as well as Planning Act application timelines. This dataset presents number of dwelling units and value of buildings approved annually from 2014–15 to 2022–23 by Local Government Areas (LGA), 2022.

The monthly Building Approvals (BAPS) collection collects data relating to residential and non-residential building work above certain value limits that have been approved within the reference month. Data from this collection is an important leading economic indicator of future building activity. It also provides the sampling framework for the quarterly Building Activity Survey, which is a major contributor to the quarterly National Accounts estimates.

Building Approval statistics are used extensively by both public and private sector organisations to monitor economic activity, employment and investment.

Please note, the Building Approvals data from financial years 2014-15 to 2015-16 was originally published using the 2011 version of the ASGS boundaries. A small number of buildings approved during this period had lower quality address information. This may result in minor deviations from previously published state totals.

In February 2025, approximately 9,135 building approvals were issued for houses in the private sector in Australia. The number of private house building approvals reached a peak in March 2021 at over 15,870 approvals.

In February 2025, the number of building approvals for dwelling units excluding houses in the private sector in Australia amounted to around 6,485. The number of building approvals increased from about 3,950 in the same period last year. Meanwhile, the number of building approvals for houses in February 2025 was around 9,135.

Building Permits in Australia increased to 17076 units in June from 15255 units in May of 2025. This dataset provides the latest reported value for - Australia Building Permits - plus previous releases, historical high and low, short-term forecast and long-term prediction, economic calendar, survey consensus and news.

The number of residential units, net of losses, approved by month.

This is the sum of residential units approved minus the units lost from planning permissions granted during the given month, as entered onto the London Development Database (LDD).

The figures include all submitted schemes, including those that replace earlier permissions on the same site or add details to previous outline permissions.

For this reason the monthly totals are comparable but the numbers can not be added to get a running total. Note that data is provided by the London Boroughs who are responsible for the quality of the data.

Borough data is not always submitted on time so the totals shown are subject to change as the data are checked and missing permissions are added.
