ABSTRACT Objective: to provide preliminary normative data for the Reading and Writing Test by type of school, and normative data for the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production for private schools and update their normative data available for public schools, all of which are for children in the final year of early childhood education. Methods: 267 children, in the age range of 5 years, and typical development. Identification Questionnaire for Parents, Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production and Reading and Writing Test were used. The means of performance in the tests of the present sample were compared with the existing normative data to justify normative data provision and updating. Results: Student’s t-test revealed that the private school children outperformed those of the public schools in all measures, reinforcing the need for specific standards, according to the type of school. There were strong to very strong relationships among the variables evaluated, demonstrating a marked association between phonological awareness and initial reading and writing abilities. The Wilcoxon test revealed significant differences between the performance of the children of the present study, from both private and public schools, and the data from the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production standardization sample, suggesting the need to update the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production standards. Finally, the new normative data were presented. Conclusion: the need to make available and update the test standards used, according to the type of school, was confirmed. Further studies are necessary to expand the data presented to other age groups.

In this paper, we present our financial literacy pilot study with two classes (kindergarten and Grade 1/2, N=37) and their educators (N=3) in Ontario, Canada. Teachers were provided with two days of professional development about five concepts of financial literacy (scarcity, saving, money, exchange, and giving) as well as picture books and accompanying lessons to teach the concepts through a teaching unit. A financial literacy pre-assessment was conducted with each student, the teachers taught the financial literacy unit for three weeks, and then students were reassessed on their financial literacy skills. Students’ scores were 35% higher on the post-assessment compared to the pre-assessment. Kindergarten students had greater gains in scores than the Grade 1/2 students. Educators were also interviewed before the professional development sessions and after they taught the financial literacy unit. Educators believed the program was successful and engaging for students, expressed the desire to continue to teach financial literacy after the study was complete, and felt more confident in their abilities after participating in the study. We advocate that financial literacy needs to begin early and needs more attention in early childhood education programs so students develop skills over time.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the reading and writing teaching practices in two pre-school classes (five-year-old children): one belonging to the public schools in Recife/PE (Brazil) and another in Paris (France). It was sought to analyze more specifically the work focused on the appropriation of alphabetic writing from the reading and writing activities developed in the classroom. The methodological procedures were interviews, observations of the daily school routine, and writing words activities with students. The analysis of the collected data showed that the teachers organized their pedagogical work in order to emphasize the use of texts and readings that were already part of the children’s universe, and also developed games and activities that led the students to think about the principles of alphabetic writing. At the end of the school year most students of both classes showed understanding of the relationship between writing and the sound of words.

TwitterIn the past five decades, the global literacy rate among adults has grown from 67 percent in 1976 to 87.36 percent in 2023. In 1976, males had a literacy rate of 76 percent, compared to a rate of 58 percent among females. This difference of over 17 percent in 1976 has fallen to just seven percent in 2020. Although gaps in literacy rates have fallen across all regions in recent decades, significant disparities remain across much of South Asia and Africa, while the difference is below one percent in Europe and the Americas. Reasons for these differences are rooted in economic and cultural differences across the globe. In poorer societies, families with limited means are often more likely to invest in their sons' education, while their daughters take up a more domestic role. Varieties do exist on national levels, however, and female literacy levels can sometimes exceed the male rate even in impoverished nations, such as Lesotho (where the difference was over 17 percent in 2014); nonetheless, these are exceptions to the norm.

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) profile is a teacher assessment of children’s development at the end of the EYFS, specifically the end of the academic year in which a child turns 5. This is typically the summer term of reception year. The EYFSP was introduced in 2012/13.
As part of wider reforms to the EYFS, the EYFS profile was revised significantly in September 2021. Changes included revisions to all 17 ELGs across the 7 areas of learning, the removal of ‘exceeding’ assessment band, and the removal of statutory local authority moderation. It is therefore not possible to directly compare 2021/22 assessment outcomes with earlier years. The 2019/20 and 2020/21 collections were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Teacher assessments cover all schools and early years providers with children registered for government-funded early years provision at the end of the EYFS. These include all state-funded schools and maintained nursery schools, children in private, voluntary and independent (PVI) providers, including childminders. Excludes a child who has not been assessed due to long periods of absence, for instance a prolonged illness, or arrived too late in the summer term for teacher assessment to be carried out, or for an exemption.
Local authority district data are based on matching the postcode of the school or provider to the National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL). Percentages may not sum to 100.
