Data collected on schools for the administration of statutory assessments including test order information. The data will include location/geographical information such as addresses and postcodes. The data is extracted from Edubase (www.education.gov.uk/edubase), a publically available portal, on a regular basis before being used within STA. The data does not include any financial data.

EDUBASE is a database of educational information relating to the field of black education in South Africa, covering the period from the nineteenth century to 1992. The resources curated by the EDUBASE collection including books and book chapters, journal articles, conference papers and presentations, white papers and other forms of governmental and civil society documents. In total, EDUBASE includes nearly 9000 publications on the topic of education for black South Africans. A separate database inspired by EDUBASE focusing specifically on education in the Transkei was produced by David Hiscock, and has been added to this collection. The database was originally located on UCT's servers. Over time, it migrated formats several times, from floppy disks to stiffy disks, then to CD-ROMs, a flashdrive, and finally to cloud-based storage provided here on ZivaHub. The School of Education at UCT kindly allocated space for the project up to 1992, and the physical collection now resides at UCT Libraries Special Collections, as the 'BC1584 Edubase Collection'. This collection consists of the database files in MS Access format (EDUBASE_Kallaway.mdb and EDUBASE_Hiscock_Transkei.mbd), along with a list of keywords in .csv format, and a set of instructions on how to navigate the databases as a PDF. The database itself is searchable by keyword, author or date of publication. Open versions of both databases have also been added in .csv format. The funding for the project was made possible by the authors of Apartheid and Education who agreed to donate their share of the royalties to a fund that was established for this purpose. Various people have worked on the EDUBASE over the years, including Jackie Kallaway, Deirdre Birch, Vera Hulley, David Hiscock and Debbie Sheward. Many thanks to them for making possible the development this invaluable tool for the advancement of research in this important area. This dataset contains all the schools in the London Borough of Camden and surrounding boroughs that appear in the EduBase database (managed by the Department for Education). Attribution includes School type, name, address and location; as well as information on pupil numbers and facilities.

Increasing emphasis has been placed on character education in recent years, including significant investment by the Department for Education (DfE) in projects aimed at developing desirable character traits in children and young people through the Character Innovation Fund. Character education can be defined in various ways, and can be seen to overlap with concepts in the literature such as 'non-cognitive skills' or 'social and emotional skills'. The primary aim of this survey was to gain a representative profile of provision within schools, colleges and other educational institutions, as well as providing an understanding of the issues that institutions face in delivering character education.

For the purpose of this survey, character education was defined as any activities that aim to develop desirable character traits in children and young people. Ultimately, character education seeks to prepare children and young people for well-rounded and successful adult lives; supporting improved academic attainment, employability and citizenship. This survey was commissioned in order to understand what schools in England currently do to try and develop desirable character traits among their pupils, and to explore their experiences of putting this provision into place. The DfE intend for this evidence to provide a basis for future work, including research into effective practice and gaps in provision. The survey forms part of a wider, mixed methods project exploring mental health and character education provision in schools and colleges across England. A sample of 6,907 primary schools, secondary schools (with and without sixth forms), post-16 institutions (FE colleges and sixth form colleges) and other less common types of institutions (including Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), alternative provision and special schools) in England was drawn from the most up-to-date extract from Edubase (March 2016) for the dual topic survey of mental health and character education provision. The survey of character education was carried out in the final term of the 2015-2016 academic year. The related survey covering mental health, Supporting Mental Health in Schools and Colleges, 2016-2017, is available under SN 8354.

Updated in Februrary 2017. Air quality in London has improved in recent years as a result of policies to reduce emissions, primarily from road transport. However, recently updated maps of pollution concentrations for 2013 (LAEI 2013) still show significant areas of exceedances of the annual mean NO2 EU Limit Values. Improvements are planned to address these, as recently announced in the Mayor’s package of air quality measures. The Updated Analysis of Air Pollution Exposure in London research provides an update to similar analysis undertaken in 2013 (which looked at pollution exposure in 2010), published recently by City Hall. It examines pollution exposure in London in 2013 and considers how exposure varies by indicators of age, relative deprivation and ethnic groups in London. It also looks at total exposure (broken down by borough) and exposure at schools. Through the research described in this report, City Hall is seeking to understand the inequalities in accessing clean air in London and considering how this will be improved by planned air pollution policies. The spreadsheet lists the schools located in areas where average concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) are over the legal and safe limit as defined by the EU Limit Values; the Limit Value is 40 μg/m3. The modelled NO2 data used in this report is from the 2013 London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (LAEI), and the list of schools used is from Edubase public portal from the Department of Education. The list is shown by borough and in descending order with the most polluted first.
