In 2022, approximately 12.4 percent of accidental house fires that led to fatalities were caused by electrical appliances. Electrical appliances are the most common known cause for deadly house fires, with cigarette and room heater ranking as the second and third most dangerous fire sources, respectively. In more close to 50 percent of cases, the cause of fire outbreak was unknown. During that year, the elderly made up a disproportionate amount of those who died in house fires, indicating a higher vulnerability compared to the average population.

The global electricity fire monitor market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing industrialization, stringent safety regulations across diverse sectors (commercial, industrial, and household), and a rising awareness of fire safety. The market's expansion is fueled by advancements in technology, leading to more sophisticated and reliable fire detection and suppression systems. Standalone electricity fire monitors currently dominate the market due to their ease of installation and cost-effectiveness, particularly in smaller applications. However, the centralized electricity fire monitor segment is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period (2025-2033), driven by the increasing demand for integrated fire safety solutions in large-scale commercial and industrial facilities. This shift reflects a preference for centralized monitoring and control, allowing for more efficient management and quicker response times in case of fire incidents. Geographic expansion is also a key driver, with regions like Asia-Pacific expected to show substantial growth due to rapid urbanization and infrastructure development. Despite this positive outlook, challenges remain, including the relatively high initial investment cost for sophisticated systems and the potential for false alarms impacting system reliability. Significant players such as Schneider Electric, ABB, and Honeywell are actively shaping the market landscape through technological innovation and strategic partnerships. The competitive landscape is characterized by both established multinational corporations and regional players. Competition is primarily based on product features, pricing, and after-sales services. The market is witnessing a growing trend towards intelligent fire monitoring systems incorporating IoT capabilities, allowing for remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and improved overall system efficiency. This technological advancement, coupled with the increasing adoption of building automation systems, is expected to further propel the market's growth in the coming years. The ongoing focus on enhancing safety standards in various industries, particularly in energy and data centers where electrical fires pose a significant risk, will continue to be a key factor driving market demand.

Fire can be a significant driver of permafrost change in boreal landscapes, altering the availability of soil carbon and nutrients that have important implications for future climate and ecological succession. However, not all landscapes are equally susceptible to fire-induced change. As fire frequency is expected to increase in the high latitudes, methods to understand the vulnerability and resilience of different landscapes to permafrost degradation are needed. Geophysical and other field observations reveal details of both near-surface (<1 m) and deeper (>1 m) impacts of fire on permafrost along 11 transects that span burned-unburned boundaries in different landscape settings within interior Alaska. Data collected along the 11 transect locations include: electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), downhole nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), active layer thickness (ALT), organic layer thickness (OLT), and plant species cover. These geospatial datasets are the foundation for the journal article: Minsley, B. J., N. J. Pastick, B. K. Wylie, D. R. N. Brown, and M. Andy Kass (2016), Evidence for nonuniform permafrost degradation after fire in boreal landscapes, J. Geophys. Res. Earth Surf., 121, 320–335, doi:10.1002/2015JF003781.
In the first quarter of 2020, 267 fire outbreaks were registered in the Greater Accra region of Ghana alone. Domestic fires were the most prevalent origin of the outbreaks. Moreover, the spread of fire through electrical installations reached 48 cases in total.
