    Description

    The average wholesale electricity price in November 2025 in Spain is forecast to amount to **** euros per megawatt-hour, a decrease compared to the previous month. The electricity price was roughly half compared to the same month in the previous year. Renewable energy dominance Wind energy has emerged as the leading source of electricity generation in Spain, accounting for over ** percent of the total in 2024. This shift towards renewables is further evidenced by the country's installed power capacity, which exceeded *** gigawatts in 2024. Solar photovoltaic leads with **** gigawatts of installed capacity, followed by wind and combined cycle. The growth in renewable energy capacity has been a key factor in shaping Spain's electricity market and influencing price trends. Consumption patterns and price fluctuations Despite the increase in renewable energy capacity, electricity consumption in Spain decreased to ****** terawatt hours in 2024, up from the previous year. In the same year, the average price of electricity was **** euros per megawatt-hour, a notable decrease from the record high of ***** euros per megawatt-hour in 2022. These price movements reflect the complex interplay between supply, demand, and the ongoing transition to renewable energy sources in Spain's electricity market.

    Wind Speed's Impact on Spanish Power Prices

    A Study of Market Efficiency

    By [source]

    About this dataset

    This dataset provides a comprehensive analysis of the influence of wind speeds on short-term electricity prices in the Spanish electricity market, OMIE. It includes information on average, minimum and maximum daily power prices in euros per megawatt hour (€/MWh) along with corresponding data from observational points about wind speed and strong gusts in kilometres per hour (km/h).

    By exploring the interactions between weather patterns and energy markets, this dataset is a valuable tool for energy stakeholders looking to forecast and manage their prices more effectively. It’s also an important resource for scientists, weather agencies and environmental regulators who need to get a handle on how changing wind patterns can impact pricing in the short term. Finally, this data is ideal for educational use as well – providing an insightful overview of how external factors can influence power costs

    How to use the dataset

    This dataset is useful to identify the influence of wind speed observations on the power prices in the Spanish electricity market, OMIE. By understanding this relationship, stakeholders can develop strategies to forecast, manage and optimize energy production and consumption.

    To make use of this dataset one should begin by exploring the data with visualizations and summary statistics. This will provide an overview of the average daily prices in euros per megawatt hour (€/MWh) as well as associated temperatures obtained by a series of wind data observation points in kilometres per hour (km/h). Comparing these variables will allow for analysis into their correlations and any seasonal fluctuations present. Additionally, further exploration can be made by plotting multiple variables against each other such as maximum power prices and percentage of maximum wind speeds achieved over various timeframes.

    Once the individual components are better understood, more comprehensive assessment can be conducted including linear regression models to evaluate interaction between independent variablen like hourly temperature observations and dependent variables like price fluctuations due to variability in demand or supply availability within given hours or days etc. With this knowledge refined analysis can be done not only with current data but future predictions from driving forces within market trends etc along with relevant external factors such as weather patterns etc too if needed could also be studied using correlation or causality studies using advanced modelling techniques if required

    Research Ideas

    • Developing pricing models and strategies in the energy market by analyzing the correlation between wind speeds and power prices across different time periods compared to various influencing factors such as supply, demand, weather conditions etc.
    • Utilizing this data to develop concepts and strategies for forecasting electricity prices with much higher accuracy than traditional methods .
    • Exploring the impacts of wind farm construction on the voltage stability and long-term price trends in regional electric grids by studying how new wind farms affect the regional power mix mix and corresponding supply/demand curves over time

    Electricity Prices and Renewables in Spain

    Hourly Granular Data from 2020-11-01 to 2022-10-31

    By [source]

    About this dataset

    This dataset provides an in-depth analysis of the electricity prices and renewable energy production in Spain, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the electrical market. This data contains granular hourly insights such as average total price (in euro/MWh) and average free market/reference market price (in euro/MWh). Furthermore, detailed energy production is available for both free and reference markets (in MWh), as well as free markets share percentages and renewable energy generation percent. Crucially, this dataset also indicates the source of renewable energy production, along with the amount produced measured in MW. All components combined offer a wide view on the country's electricity prices, sources of power & amount produced from the source - allowing informed decisions to be made regarding electricity consumption & generation

    How to use the dataset

    This dataset provides valuable insight into the electricity prices and renewable energy production in Spain. It can be used to analyze trends in prices and renewable energy generation over time.

    Data is provided hourly granular, with the average total price of electricity (in euro/MWh) as well as the average price in both the free market and reference market (also in euro/MWh). The data also includes information on energy produced by both markets, expressed in MWh, as well as their respective market shares (both expressed in percent). Renewable energy production is also included, specified by source and expressed in MW.

    To get started you will need to have a basic understanding of how electricity markets work. With that knowledge you will be able to make sense of various metrics such as total price, free market share or renewable generation % etc.

    Firstly you need to decide what kind of information it is that you want to analyze from this dataset – whether it’s trends over time for particular sources of renewable energy or comparative analysis between different types of energy production methods. This will help determine which parts of the data are useful for your analysis.

    Once done, you can start exploring various axes – i.e compare different metrics such as total power produced vs cost or pollutant emissions- across different days or even hour wise with respect to hours that have more demand etc . Highlighting any outliers gives meaningful insights into areas where further research is needed while correlating multiple factors helps discover hidden relationships between variables not necessarily linked through intuition alone! Ultimately giving users more depth and understanding when making decisions based on this data!

    Research Ideas

    • Identifying trends in renewable energy sources and the implementation of new policies to incentivize production from those sources;
    • Estimating the effect of market forces and regulations on electrical pricing across different markets;
    • Investigating correlations between geographical regions and their respective reliance upon certain energy sources or prices for electricity

At the time, Irish households were charged around 0.44 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour, while in Italy, the price stood at 0.42 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. By comparison, in Russia, residents paid almost 10 times less. What is behind electricity prices? Electricity prices vary widely across the world and sometimes even within a country itself, depending on factors like infrastructure, geography, and politically determined taxes and levies. For example, in Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden, taxes constitute a significant portion of residential end-user electricity prices. Reliance on fossil fuel imports Meanwhile, thanks to their great crude oil and natural gas production output, countries like Iran, Qatar, and Russia enjoy some of the cheapest electricity prices in the world. Here, the average household pays less than 0.1 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. In contrast, countries heavily reliant on fossil fuel imports for electricity generation are more vulnerable to market price fluctuations.
