    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Elk Grove population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Elk Grove across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Elk Grove was 178,444, a 0.24% increase year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Elk Grove population was 178,009, an increase of 0.03% compared to a population of 177,964 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Elk Grove increased by 96,781. In this period, the peak population was 178,444 in the year 2023. The numbers suggest that the population has not reached its peak yet and is showing a trend of further growth. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description

The winter range of the West Goose Lake Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) sub-herd is located north of Alturas and west of Highway 395 within the Devil’s Garden Ranger District of the Modoc National Forest. This area is characterized by juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) woodlands, and sagebrush flats with some stands of lodgepole (Pinus contorta) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) throughout flat, rocky terrain. From this area, a portion of the herd migrates approximately 50 miles north into Oregon’s Fremont National Forest, habitat that primarily consists of lodgepole and ponderosa pine forests. Minimal barriers exist along this migration route since the corridor primarily occurs on land managed by the US Forest Service. Additionally, although the core migration route does cross Highway 140, little to no impacts are known to exist from this crossing. These data provide the location of migration routes for elk in the West Goose Lake population in California and Oregon. They were developed from 25 migration sequences collected from a sample size of 12 animals comprising GPS locations collected every 4-8 hours.

Elk (Cervus canadensis) are generally considered a keystone species across a variety of landscapes. Elk (C. canandenis nelsoni) in Jasper National Park is one of four extant subspecies of elk occurring in North America. They are an important wildlife component in the Park regarding the management of human-wildlife conflict and understanding caribou/wolf population dynamics. Every five years, data are collected by aerial surveys over set transects across the Park to estimate population size and composition and inform management activities.

    Description

The project leads for the collection of this data were Erin Zulliger and Richard Shinn. Elk (12 adult females, 1 adult male, and 3 juvenile [less than 1 year of age] males) were captured from 2018 to February 2020 and equipped with Lotek and Vectronic satellite GPS collars. Additional GPS data was collected from elk (2 females and 1 male) in 1999-2002 and included in the analysis to supplement the small sample size of the 2018-2020 dataset. GPS locations were fixed at 4-hour intervals in the 2018-2020 dataset and 6 to 8-hour intervals in the 1999-2002 dataset. To improve the quality of the data set as per Bjørneraas et al. (2010), the GPS data were filtered prior to analysis to remove locations which were: i) further from either the previous point or subsequent point than an individual elk is able to travel in the elapsed time, ii) forming spikes in the movement trajectory based on outgoing and incoming speeds and turning angles sharper than a predefined threshold , or iii) fixed in 2D space and visually assessed as a bad fix by the analyst.

The methodology used for this migration analysis allowed for the mapping of winter ranges and the identification and prioritization of migration corridors. Brownian Bridge Movement Models (BBMMs; Sawyer et al. 2009) were constructed with GPS collar data from 12 migrating elk, including 25 migration sequences, location, date, time, and average location error as inputs in Migration Mapper. Five migration sequences from 3 elk, with an average migration time of 6.8 days and an average migration distance of 16.14 km, were used from the 1999-2002 dataset. All three of these elk were used to supplement the eastern members of this herd, which travel shorter distances between summer and winter range than western individuals in the sample. Twenty migration sequences from 9 elk, with an average migration time of 11.2 days and an average migration distance of 57.75 km, were used from the 2018-2020 dataset. Corridors and stopovers were prioritized based on the number of animals moving through a particular area. BBMMs were produced at a spatial resolution of 50 m using a sequential fix interval of less than 27 hours and a fixed motion variance of 1400. Winter range analyses were based on data from 11 individual elk and 18 wintering sequences using a fixed motion variance of 1400. Winter range designations for this herd would likely expand with a larger sample, filling in some of the gaps between winter range polygons in the map. Large water bodies were clipped from the final outputs.

Corridors are visualized based on elk use per cell, with greater than or equal to 1 elk and greater than or equal to 3 elk (20% of the sample) representing migration corridors and high use corridors, respectively. Stopovers were calculated as the top 10 percent of the population level utilization distribution during migrations and can be interpreted as high use areas. Stopover polygon areas less than 20,000 m2were removed, but remaining small stopovers may be interpreted as short-term resting sites, likely based on a small concentration of points from an individual animal. Winter range is visualized as the 50thpercentile contour of the winter range utilization distribution.

    Description

Elk are by far the dominant ungulate in Waterton Lakes Naitonal Park, with a population large enough to influence park ecosystems, particularly in the montane and aspen parkland ecoregions. As important grazers, they help to maintain grassland health by preventing woody plant encroachment, but overgrazing will cause grassland health to deteriorate. In Waterton Lakes National Park, aerial elk surveys (Figure 1) have been conducted since the early 1970s. The winter elk population census is conducted by means of an aerial or ground survey, in which a complete minimum population count is calculated, with the goal of detecting change over time. Historic counts are collated from park files and annual reports, as well as survey reports.

    Description

Little information exists regarding demographic rates and abundance of elk in the Marble Mountains in California. In the early 1990s and 2000s, elk were reintroduced from Oregon into the Marble Mountain area (CDFW, 2018). Since then, elk have reestablished throughout much of the area, but GPS collar data and information on movement are limited. Current research examines how fire influences elk occupancy in the area. Elk were collared from 2006 to 2013, at sites in the Klamath National Forest and Marble Mountain Wilderness in the north, and close to Cecilville in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in the south. After collaring, elk were separated into three distinct sub-herds (north: Ukonom, central: Wooley Creek, and south: South Fork) due to non-overlapping GPS data points within these areas. The Marble Mountain elk do not migrate between traditional summer and winter seasonal ranges. Instead, the herd contains short-distance elevation-based migrants that display a nomadic migratory tendency, moving up or down elevational gradients. Some elk used higher elevation areas throughout the summer, though this pattern was not ubiquitous. Therefore, annual home ranges were modeled using year-round GPS data to demarcate high use areas in lieu of modeling the specific winter ranges commonly seen in other ungulate analyses in California. More collars are being deployed in collaboration with the Karuk Tribe, but these data are not included here. These mapping layers show the location of the annual ranges for elk (Cervus canadensis) in the Marble Mountain population in California. They were developed from 12 sequences collected from a sample size of 11 animals comprising GPS locations collected every 2-10 hours.

    Description

Parks Canada monitored wolf and elk winter populations annually in BNP during the study period over 26 years from 1985-1986 (i.e., November 1985 to April 1986) through 2010-2011. The agency began counting the Bow Valley (non-refuge) wolf population upon wolf recolonization in the winter of 1985-1986. Prior to the winter of 1992-1993, the Bow Valley supported two wolf packs (the Castle and Spray packs), which then merged to form a single pack (the Bow Valley pack). We summed the population counts from the Castle and Spray packs to determine the total number of wolves in the Bow Valley during the early years of the study period. Parks Canada conducted late-winter aerial surveys to determine elk populations in the town of Banff (refuge) and the Bow Valley. We applied a sightability adjustment of 13% to correct observer bias in the elk population counts. Parks Canada took aggressive management actions to control growing urban elk populations in the Banff townsite (Banff hereafter) starting in 1998. From 1998 to 2001, Parks Canada relocated elk far outside the system (equivalent to harvest with no return) to mitigate emerging human-elk conflicts. As a part of this management plan, Parks Canada began an aversive conditioning program to further combat the problems of habituated elk. Outside of this three-year period, Banff elk have not been subjected to any human harvest under the management authority of Parks Canada. Similarly, the Bow Valley wolf and elk populations have not experienced any human hunting or culling for the duration of our study, although both were subjected to occasional vehicle caused mortality despite extensive highway mitigation. For further study area description, see Hebblewhite M, Pletscher DH, Paquet PC (2002) Elk population dynamics in areas with and without predation by recolonizing wolves in Banff National Park, Alberta.
