The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) challenge the global community to build a world where no one is left behind.
Since 2018, Elsevier has generated SDG search queries to help researchers and institutions track and demonstrate progress toward the SDG targets. In the past 5 years, these queries, along with the university’s own data and evidence supporting progress and contributions to the particular SDG outside of research-based metrics, are used for the THE Impact Rankings.
For 2023, the SDGs use the exact same search query and ML algorithm as the Elsevier 2022 SDG mappings, with only minor modifications to five SDGs, namely SDG 1, 4, 5, 7 and 14. In these cases, the queries were shortened by removing exclusion lists based on journal identifiers. These exclusion lists often contained thousands of items to filter out content in journals that were not core to the SDGs.
To replicate the effect of these journal exclusions, sets of keywords were used to closely mimic the effects the journal exclusions had on the SDG content, while greatly reducing the overall query size and complexity. By following this approach, we were able to limit the changes to the publications in each SDG by less than 2 percent for most SDGs, while reducing the query size by 50 percent or more.
These shortened queries also have the added benefit of running faster in Scopus, allowing further analysis of the SDG data to be done more easily.
For each SDG, the full search query, along with further details about the top keyphrases, subfields, journals and keyphrases are available for download.

Conferences are an essential tool for scientific communication. In disciplines such as Computer Science, over 50% of original research results are published in conference proceedings. In this dataset, there is is a list of conference proceedings, categorized Q1 - Q4 by analogy with SJR journal quartiles. We have analyzed the role of conference proceedings in various disciplines and propose an alternative approach to research evaluation based on conference proceedings and Scimago Journal Rank (SJR). Comparison of the resulting list in Computer Science with the CORE ranking showed a 62% match, as well as an average rank correlation of the distribution by category.

Environmental Modelling & Software (EMS) is a highly ranked (IF: 4.177) Elsevier scientific journal that publishes contributions, in the form of research articles, reviews and short communications, on recent advances in environmental modelling and/or software. The aim is to improve our capacity to represent, understand, predict or manage the behavior of environmental systems at all practical scales. The topical scope of EMS is intentionally broad, which has the effect of attracting many hundreds of submissions per year. However, a large portion of these submissions do not fit within the journal scope in terms of the type and quality of contribution. Indeed, EMS has become noted as one of the top “methods” journals in the environmental science field. As such the editorial board is seeking submissions that provide strong methodological advances in both modelling and software. In this presentation, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Dan Ames will discuss the scope of the journal and will share the 5 most common reasons why research articles are rejected from EMS. Many of these concepts are applicable to other scientific journals and can be used to help authors improve their publication success rate in generally – as well as in EMS specifically. This presentation was delivered in Nanjing, China on September 20, 2018.

Parallel to the dataset CORD-19 of scholarly articles, we provide the literature graph LG-covid19-HOTP composed of not only articles (graph nodes) that are relevant to the study of coronavirus, but also in and out citation links (directed graph edges) to base navigation and search among the articles. The article records are related and connected, not isolated. The graph has been updated weekly since March 26, 2020. The current graph includes 28,669 hot-off-the-press (HOTP) articles since January 2020. It contains 402,946 articles and 3,604,234 links. The link-to-node ratio is remarkably higher than some other existing literature graphs. In addition to the dataset we provide more functionalities at lg-covid-19-hotp.cs.duke.edu such as new articles, weekly meta-data analysis in terms of publication growth over time, ranking by citation, and statistical near-neighbor embedding maps by similarity in co-citation, and similarity in co-reference. Since April 11, we have enabled a novel functionality - self-navigated surf-search over the maps. At the site we also take courtesy input of COVID-19 articles that are missing from the current collection. {"references": ["Semantic Scholar Open Research Corpus. 2019. Version 2019-11-01.
