    Description

At the end of the 2024 financial year, just over 34,000 cafés and restaurants in operation in Australia had an annual turnover of between 200,000 and two million Australian dollars. This figure represents a majority of the roughly 55,700 cafés and restaurants operating nationwide. A much smaller number of cafés and restaurants reported an annual turnover greater than two million Australian dollars. A key sector of the Australian economy In recent years, a rise in the number of cafés and restaurants has been witnessed throughout Australia, remaining over 55,000 establishments for two consecutive years. Before the COVID-19 pandemic severely affected Australia’s economy, the annual turnover of cafés, restaurants, and takeaway food services nationwide had increased each year for more than a decade. In 2024, annual revenue reached a new peak of over 65 billion Australian dollars. Australia's coffee culture New South Wales leads across Australia's states and territories with over 19,225 cafés and restaurants at the end of the financial year 2024, followed closely by Victoria. This concentration in Australia's most populous states underscores the urban-centric nature of the country's food service industry. Coffee plays a crucial role in this landscape, with Australians ranking it as their most regularly consumed beverage in a 2024 survey. The popularity of coffee has supported the proliferation of both international chains, including McCafé, and domestic franchises, such as The Coffee Club and Donut King, across Australia.

Worker Retention Analytics Platforms Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the Global Worker Retention Analytics Platforms market size was valued at $2.4 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $8.1 billion by 2033, expanding at a robust CAGR of 14.2% during 2024–2033. The primary factor driving this remarkable growth is the mounting need among organizations to reduce employee turnover and improve workforce stability in an increasingly competitive labor market. As businesses recognize the high costs associated with recruiting and training new employees, the adoption of advanced analytics platforms to proactively identify retention risks and implement targeted engagement strategies has become a strategic imperative across industries worldwide.

    Regional Outlook

North America currently commands the largest share of the Worker Retention Analytics Platforms market, accounting for approximately 37% of global revenue in 2024. This dominance can be attributed to the region’s mature enterprise sector, widespread digital transformation initiatives, and early adoption of HR technology. The United States, in particular, boasts a well-established ecosystem of analytics vendors, driven by progressive labor policies and a high demand for sophisticated workforce management solutions. Furthermore, the prevalence of remote and hybrid work models in the region has accelerated the need for real-time employee engagement and retention insights, prompting organizations to invest heavily in analytics platforms that can deliver actionable recommendations and measurable ROI.

Asia Pacific is emerging as the fastest-growing region in the Worker Retention Analytics Platforms market, forecasted to register a remarkable CAGR of 17.8% from 2024 to 2033. Rapid economic development, the expansion of multinational corporations, and increasing awareness of the costs associated with high employee attrition are fueling demand for advanced retention analytics solutions across countries like China, India, Japan, and Australia. Investments in digital infrastructure, coupled with the proliferation of cloud-based HR platforms, are enabling organizations in the region to harness predictive analytics and machine learning for workforce optimization. Additionally, governments in Asia Pacific are introducing labor reforms and skill development initiatives that further incentivize enterprises to prioritize employee retention and engagement through technology.

In emerging economies across Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, the adoption of Worker Retention Analytics Platforms is steadily gaining traction, although growth is tempered by challenges such as limited digital maturity, budget constraints, and varying regulatory frameworks. Organizations in these regions are increasingly recognizing the value of data-driven retention strategies, especially in sectors facing acute talent shortages or high turnover rates. However, localized demand is often shaped by unique workforce dynamics, cultural factors, and evolving labor laws, necessitating tailored analytics solutions. Policy interventions and foreign investments are expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of retention analytics platforms in these emerging markets over the forecast period.

Employee Engagement Platform for Restaurants Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the Global Employee Engagement Platform for Restaurants market size was valued at $1.25 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $3.62 billion by 2033, expanding at a CAGR of 12.5% during 2024–2033. The rapid digital transformation across the hospitality sector, coupled with the increasing need to enhance employee retention, productivity, and satisfaction, stands out as a primary driver for the robust growth of this market globally. As restaurants face mounting pressure to deliver exceptional customer experiences amid labor shortages and high turnover rates, investment in advanced employee engagement platforms is becoming a strategic imperative. These platforms streamline communication, foster collaboration, and enable real-time feedback, which are critical for operational efficiency and staff morale in a demanding industry like food service.

    Regional Outlook

North America currently commands the largest share of the global Employee Engagement Platform for Restaurants market, accounting for approximately 38% of total revenues in 2024. This dominance is attributed to the mature digital infrastructure, early adoption of cloud-based solutions, and a highly competitive restaurant landscape in the United States and Canada. The region's established quick service and full-service restaurant chains are prioritizing investments in technology to address high employee turnover and deliver consistent service quality. Furthermore, progressive labor policies and a strong focus on workplace culture have accelerated the adoption of engagement platforms. The presence of leading software vendors and service providers in North America further amplifies innovation and market penetration, positioning the region as a trendsetter in employee engagement technologies.

Asia Pacific is poised to be the fastest-growing region, with a projected CAGR of 15.2% from 2024 to 2033. Rapid urbanization, a burgeoning middle class, and the proliferation of restaurant chains across China, India, Southeast Asia, and Australia are fueling demand for scalable employee engagement solutions. Investment drivers include the expansion of international foodservice brands, rising labor costs, and a growing awareness of the link between staff engagement and restaurant profitability. Governments in the region are also promoting digitalization in the hospitality sector through policy incentives and public-private partnerships. As a result, both local and multinational vendors are intensifying their focus on the Asia Pacific market, tailoring solutions to address language, cultural, and regulatory nuances.

In emerging economies such as Latin America, the Middle East, and parts of Africa, adoption of employee engagement platforms is gaining momentum, albeit at a slower pace. Factors such as inconsistent internet connectivity, limited digital literacy, and budget constraints pose significant challenges. However, localized demand is growing, especially among urban restaurants and multinational chains seeking to standardize HR practices and improve operational efficiency. Policy reforms aimed at boosting tourism and hospitality, coupled with increasing smartphone penetration, are expected to gradually bridge the adoption gap. Vendors are responding by offering modular, mobile-first solutions and flexible pricing models, enabling smaller establishments to participate in the digital transformation of the restaurant workforce.

    Description

The University and Other Higher Education industry is grappling with the post-pandemic landscape. The COVID-19 outbreak significantly shifted the industry's demand and delivery methods. Social distancing requirements and operational constraints caused most universities to pivot online. Remote learning has remained embedded into teaching post-pandemic, providing convenience for students and profitability benefits for universities. A heightened focus on research during the pandemic offset revenue lost from declines in tuition fees. This trend has been slowing and is under additional threat from a US Government that appears intent on reducing its funding for foreign-based research, to the detriment of Australian institutions. The industry's labour market has been volatile as the pandemic pushed universities to increasingly casualise their workforces. Controversies over underpayment have led to reputational damage and strikes among major Australian universities. Melbourne University's enforceable agreement with the Fair Work Ombudsman to pay more than $72.0 million to over 25,000 staff highlights the magnitude of these disputes. Economic and demographic factors have aided the industry's post-pandemic recovery despite these pressures. A depreciating Australian dollar has benefited returning international students, while growth in the population of people aged 18 to 25 has bolstered domestic enrolments. Lower secondary school retention rates, slipping during the pandemic, are dampening this growth. Overall, revenue is expected to drop at an annualised 1.9% to an estimated $38.8 billion over the five years through 2024-25. This trend includes a 0.6% drop in revenue anticipated for 2024-25. The outlook for the industry is promising, driven by changing labour market conditions and demographic trends. Stricter visa requirements to control migration will pose challenges. However, the industry will face these constrictions by constructing new student accommodation facilities, allowing institutions to enrol international students beyond their designated cap. The consolidation of the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia into Adelaide University in 2026 will intensify competition for enrolments, particularly from international students, given its ambitious ranking goals. These factors mean revenue is forecast to climb at an annualised 2.1% to $43.1 billion through the end of 2029-30.

    Description

Supermarkets have maintained stable volume-driven business strategies amid a pricing environment that has been in the spotlight. Conflict in the Middle East, avian flu outbreaks and other inflationary pressures have driven prices up, with many stores passing on these costs to consumers. While consumers are paying more for groceries and upstream suppliers are seeing their margins shrink, supermarkets Coles and Woolworths have maintained relatively stable profit margins, among the highest in the world. The continued expansion of Aldi and Amazon has forced the two established industry giants to shift gears recently to remain price-competitive on both the physical store and online service fronts, launching short-term price discounting initiatives. These supermarket giants also rely on loyalty programs and promotions. Coles and Woolworths have displayed interest in data analytics, strengthening their relationships with analytics data giants like Palantir to optimise their marketing and operational processes. The ACCC's landmark supermarkets inquiry, while not finding evidence of price gouging, identified 20 key recommendations that would ensure a more sustainable market and avoid oligopolistic exploitation. Supermarket and grocery revenue rose significantly following the COVID-19 outbreak. A combination of panic buying, along with the suspension of many specials and promotions in supermarkets, boosted grocery turnover at the beginning of the period, spiking revenue for the two years through 2020-21. This high benchmark at the start of the period has resulted in an industry correction and an annualised revenue contraction of 0.4% to $144.3 billion over the five years through 2025-26. Revenue is estimated to climb 0.4% in 2025-26, reflecting the price-driven industry growth that falling tobacco sales have offset. Supermarkets and grocery stores are set to perform well, with industry revenue slated to climb at an annualised 1.5% through 2030-31 to $155.6 billion. Population growth will remain a key growth factor that stores rely on, as many continue a volume-driven business approach to generating revenue. Should the transparency-related recommendations from the ACCC's inquiry be implemented, some price-driven growth may be curtailed. Eventually, when inflationary pressures subside and consumer sentiment returns to a positive level, supermarkets and grocers will be well-positioned to take advantage of consumer appetite for value-added and premium goods. Strong growth in online sales is set to continue.

    Description

Shifting social trends have significantly influenced the Restaurants industry's performance over recent years. Consumers' busy lifestyles and high workloads have driven demand for restaurant meals, as well as takeaway and delivery services. Restaurants allow consumers to combine dining with leisure and avoid spending time on food preparation. Rising demand for food delivery platforms like Uber Eats, which enable time-poor consumers to purchase home-delivered, restaurant-quality food, has also supported industry revenue. Despite tight discretionary incomes and recent cost-of-living pressures, Australian consumers have continued to prioritise eating restaurant meals, as they view them as affordable indulgences. However, industry businesses are struggling with elevated operational costs, including high input, rent and energy expenses. Labour shortages have also plagued the industry, with restaurants facing significant retention gaps. These challenges, along with intense competitive pressures, have eroded the industry’s profitability, compelling some businesses to exit the industry. Nonetheless, the total number of enterprises in the industry has increased over the past five years as dynamic consumer preferences have created several niches for restaurants to cater to. Overall, industry revenue is expected to have soared at an annualised 8.2% over the five years through 2025-26 to $26.2 billion. This includes a moderate anticipated rise of 0.4% in 2025-26. Reeling from the economic challenges of the past five years, restaurants are set to diversify their revenue streams by expanding their service offerings to include merchandise and live events over the coming years. Restaurants are forecast to focus on improving operational efficiencies to limit costs and boost their profit margins. This includes adopting integrated technological advancements that will enhance the overall dining experience for customers. There will also be a focus on sustainability efforts as Australian consumers become more discerning about their environmental choices. Overall, industry revenue is projected to increase at an annualised 2.0% over the five years through 2030-31 to reach $28.9 billion.
