    Description

The statistic shows the unemployment rate in Canada from 2019 to 2023, with projections up until 2029. In 2023, the unemployment rate in Canada was at around 5.41 percent. Canada’s economy Three-quarter of Canada’s workforce is employed in the services sector, with the other two sectors, agriculture and industry, accounting for the rest of Canada’s employment. The country’s main export and import partner is the United States. Although both export and import figures have increased over the last few years, the trade balance of goods in Canada – i.e. the value of Canada’s exports minus the value of its imports – has slumped dramatically since the economic crisis hit in 2008. In 2009, for the first time in a decade, Canada reported a trade deficit, and the figures are still struggling to recover. Additionally, Canada’s public debt has been increasing since the crisis. Although a few key figures are still not back to the usual level, Canada and its economy seem to have more or less bounced back from the crisis; as can be seen above, the unemployment rate is gradually decreasing, for example, and gross domestic product / GDP in Canada has been increasing steadily. Canada is thus among the countries with the largest proportion of global gross domestic product / GDP based on Purchasing Power Parity. Canada is among the leading trading nations worldwide, and an important part of its economy is the export of oil. The country hosts significant oil resources, in fact, its capacity is the third-largest after those of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

    Description

The Measuring the Effectiveness of Student Aid (MESA) dataset comprises a sample of low income students receiving student financial aid in 2006-07. Students were contacted first (Cycle I) in February-May of that academic year (the precise date varying by province), and were then followed up in 2007-08 (Cycle II), contacted in February April of that year. Students will be contacted again in 2008-09 for the last time. The dataset represents a national sample, including all provinces-except for Prince Edward Island. In the spring and summer of 2005, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation negotiated a series of agreements with provincial governments to deliver a set of bursaries (known as “Access Bursaries”) to first-time, first-year undergraduates from low-income families. These agreements are all broadly similar though eligibility criteria vary slightly by jurisdiction (section 1, below, describes the Access Bursaries as they exist in each province). Students do not need to apply for the award separately; instead, they are automatically considered for the award through their application for provincial student assistance. The sample represents a particular subset of the students who received student financial aid in their first year of postsecondary education in 2006 07. In the majority of the provinces, this subset consists of the students who received a Low Income Bursary from the Millennium Scholarship Foundation. In British Columbia and Nova Scotia, a control group made up of students who received financial aid but not the Millennium Bursary was surveyed as well. The Ontario sample is made up those Millennium Bursary recipients who also received a Canada Access Grant and those who did not, with sub-samples selected from each group (all appear together in the data but can be separately identified). The Bursary and the Grant are awarded in similar amounts, but the eligibility requirements are different. This dataset was freely received from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. Some work was required for the variable and value labels, and missing values. They were corrected as best as possible with the documentation received. Caution should be used with this dataset as some variables are lacking information.

    Description

Demand for Canadian graphic designers’ services has been impacted by various factors in recent years. Shifting economic conditions have significantly bolstered revenue volatility for providers, whose fortunes are closely tied to advertising expenditure and corporate profit. COVID-19 led to a steep drop in demand in 2020, as advertising budgets and business income were negatively affected. Although there was a rebound in 2021 due to relaxed restrictions, lingering economic uncertainty curbed a more robust recovery. In 2022, high inflation prompted spending cuts on discretionary services like graphic design, causing another substantial revenue drop. As inflation eased in 2023, spending and demand rebounded, but recessionary fears caused by rising interest rates in 2023 and 2024 pressured clients to further reduce spending, leading to a moderate drop in demand in 2024. Additionally, increasing competition from freelancers, small non-employers and in-house teams has suppressed growth opportunities for established firms, while the rapid adoption of digital technologies has opened lucrative niches, particularly for those specializing in digital content, contributing to growth in profit since 2020. Overall, revenue for graphic designers in Canada has inched upward at a CAGR of 0.4% over the past five years, reaching CA$1.8 billion in 2025. This includes a 2.2% gain in revenue in that year. Canada’s steady economic growth is set to boost long-term demand for graphic designers, as rising GDP and increased corporate profit will spur greater investment in the industry’s services. This growth will also encourage new business formation, expanding the client base for designers. However, potential economic disruptions, particularly US tariffs on Canadian goods, could suppress growth by reducing GDP and increasing unemployment, leading to lower spending on design services. To stay competitive, providers may need to intensify their marketing efforts. At the same time, advancements in digital technology and AI will drive greater efficiency and innovation, though they may slow employment growth as repetitive tasks become automated. Increasing client emphasis on diversity, inclusivity and social responsibility will also continue to shape design trends and differentiate firms in the evolving marketplace. Overall, revenue for Canadian graphic designers is forecast to expand at a CAGR of 2.3% over the next five years, reaching CA$2.0 billion in 2030.
