    Description

The average annual domestic electricity bill in the United Kingdom saw an overall increase from 2010 to 2022 and boomed in 2023. In this period, households with an annual consumption of 5,100 kilowatt-hours saw bills rise from 539 to 1,152 British pounds, including value-added tax. The household expenditure on electricity in the UK amounted to approximately 26.3 billion current British pounds in 2022. Direct debit payments consistently cheaper In the period under consideration, the annual bill for an electricity consumption of 3,600 kilowatt-hours was consistently more expensive for consumers using standard credit as a method of payment, averaging 959 real British pounds in the latter year. From 2016 onwards, consumers using the prepayment method paid less than standard credit consumers and, in 2022, their bill was the least expensive, at 903 real British pounds. Electricity prices on the rise Household electricity prices in the UK have doubled in the past decade for both consumer groups. Despite the UK government setting a tariff cap to protect consumers, UK’s power market was greatly impacted by the global energy crisis. In the summer of 2022, electricity prices in Great Britain peaked at 363.7 British pounds per megawatt-hour.

    Description

In February 2025, electricity prices in the United Kingdom amounted to 143.37 British pounds per megawatt-hour, an increase on the previous month. A record high was reached in August 2022 when day-ahead baseload contracts averaged 363.7 British pounds per megawatt-hour.
Electricity price stabilization in Europe Electricity prices increased in 2024 compared to the previous year, when prices stabilized after the energy supply shortage. Price spikes were driven by the growing wholesale prices of natural gas and coal worldwide, which are among the main sources of power in the region.

… and in the United Kingdom? The United Kingdom was one of the countries with the highest electricity prices worldwide during the energy crisis. Since then, prices have been stabilizing, almost to pre-energy crisis levels. The use of nuclear, wind, and bioenergy for electricity generation has been increasing recently. The fuel types are an alternative to fossil fuels and are part of the country's power generation plans going into the future.

    Update 20 August 2024

We have updated the list of payments made under the Energy Bills Discount Scheme.

We collect information about the payments made under the Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS) in Great Britain (GB) and Northern Ireland (NI). Electricity and gas suppliers provide data on the discounts they have given to eligible non-domestic customers from 1 April 2023.

The EBDS began on 1 April 2023, succeeding the Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS), which ended in March 2023. See the data relating to the Energy Bill Relief Scheme: payments made under the scheme.

    The spreadsheet shows:

    • the total amount of money paid to electricity and gas suppliers for discounts provided to non-domestic customers under EBDS
    • the net increase in each claim window
    • the corresponding volumes of discounted electricity and gas consumption
    • the number of contracts supported in each claim window

    The data are presented by:

    • scheme – Great Britain and Northern Ireland
    • fuel type – electricity and gas
    • scheme discount – baseline, energy and trade intensive industries (ETIIs) and heat networks

These data do not constitute an Official or National Statistics release.

Energy production, trade and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

    Energy production, trade and consumption

Highlights for the 3 month period December 2022 to February 2023, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 5.7%, with higher energy prices a key factor in reduced consumption levels. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 6.9%. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 5.8%, due to falls in oil production and nuclear output due to outages. (table ET 1.1)
    • Russian imports have ceased. The UK has not imported any Russian gas since March 2022, and there have been no Russian oil imports since December 2022. (table ET 4.4) and (table ET 3.14)
    • Gas exports up 84%; the UK has been playing a key role in supplying gas to Europe as it looks to move away from Russian gas. (table ET 4.3)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 5.8%, with coal down 25%, gas down 5.1%, nuclear down 13% with output in February 2023 at a record low monthly level, and renewables down 2.4% due to less favourable weather conditions for wind generation.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Renewables provided a record high 44.4% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with gas at 37.0%, nuclear at 15.2% and coal at 2.5%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 0.4 percentage points at 59.6%, whilst fossil fuel share down 0.4 percentage points at 39.8%.* (table ET 5.4)

*Major Power Producers (MPPs) data published monthly, all generating companies data published quarterly.

    Energy prices

Highlights for April 2023 compared to March 2023:

    • Petrol down 0.7 pence per litre and diesel down 4.7 pence per litre. (table QEP 4.1.1)

    Description

Consumers using a direct debit method of payment had the lowest average domestic standard electricity bill in the United Kingdom until 2021, although prepayment accounted for the least expensive bill in 2022 and 2023. For most of the decade, prepayment incurred the highest average bills for consumers, however from 2016 it has been surpassed by standard credit. In 2023, standard credit customers paid an average of 959 pounds for their electricity bill. The average domestic standard electricity bill in the UK has increased over the past decade for all payment methods.
