In 2020/21 there were approximately 696,000 Polish nationals living in the United Kingdom, the highest non-British population at this time. Indian and Irish were the joint second-largest nationalities at approximately 370,000 people.

In 2011, 87.2 percent of the total population of the United Kingdom were white British. A positive net migration in recent years combined with the resultant international relationships following the wide-reaching former British Empire has contributed to an increasingly diverse population.

Varied ethnic backgrounds

Black British citizens, with African and/or African-Caribbean ancestry, are the largest ethnic minority population, at three percent of the total population. Indian Britons are one of the largest overseas communities of the Indian diaspora and make up 2.3 percent of the total UK population. Pakistani British citizens, who make up almost two percent of the UK population, have one of the highest levels of home ownership in Britain.

Racism in the United Kingdom

Though it has decreased in comparison to the previous century, the UK has seen an increase in racial prejudice during the first decade and a half of this century. Racism and discrimination continues to be part of daily life for Britain’s ethnic minorities, especially in terms of work, housing, and health issues. Moreover, the number of hate crimes motivated by race reported since 2012 has increased, and in 2017/18, there were 3,368 recorded offenses of racially or religiously aggravated assault with injury, almost a thousand more than in 2013/14.

Among the Hispanic population in England, regardless of the race, the largest group is of Mexican origin, with a population of 116 (100% of the total Hispanic population).

Ethnic group (write-in responses)

Ethnic group classifies people according to their own perceived ethnic group and cultural background.

This topic contains ethnic group write-in responses without reference to the five broad ethnic group categories, e.g. all Irish people, irrespective of whether they are White, Mixed/multiple ethnic groups, Asian/Asian British, Black/African/Caribbean/Black British or Other ethnic group, are in the Irish response category. This topic was created as part of the commissioned table processing.

This project is a collaboration between the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), Department of Health and Social Care and the School of Geography, University of Leeds. A set of population estimates by ethnic group, age and sex has been created for subnational geographies in England (Local Authorities and Clinical Commissioning Groups) annually for the period 2014 to 2019.

The purpose of the collaboration was to use the population estimates as denominators in rates of health. The data files, along with documentation and code, are made available here for others to use in health or other population related work.

According to the 2021 Census, the population of England and Wales was more diverse in younger generations than in older ones. As of this year, approximately 73 percent of Generation Alpha in England and Wales, the youngest generation, belonged to the white ethnic group, compared with 95 percent of the Pre-War generation.

In 2021, there were approximately 357,000 Indian residents living in London, the most of any foreign nationality. Nigerian nationals numbered 142,000, and were the second most common nationality in this year.

This statistic shows the application rate, by ethnic group, of 18-year-old pupils from English state schools to United Kingdom (UK) universities in 2013. Of pupils of Chinese origin, 56 percent applied to a university in 2013, the highest application rate of any ethnic group.

Area type

Census 2021 statistics are published for a number of different geographies. These can be large, for example the whole of England, or small, for example an output area (OA), the lowest level of geography for which statistics are produced.

For higher levels of geography, more detailed statistics can be produced. When a lower level of geography is used, such as output areas (which have a minimum of 100 persons), the statistics produced have less detail. This is to protect the confidentiality of people and ensure that individuals or their characteristics cannot be identified.

Lower Tier Local Authorities

Lower tier local authorities provide a range of local services. In England there are 309 lower tier local authorities. These are made up of non-metropolitan districts (181), unitary authorities (59), metropolitan districts (36) and London boroughs (33, including City of London). In Wales there are 22 local authorities made up of 22 unitary authorities. Of these local authority types, only non-metropolitan districts are not additionally classified as upper tier local authorities.

Between 2023 and 2024, over sixteen percent of all those registered with type 2 diabetes in England were Asian or Asian British. This statistic displays the share of individuals registered with diabetes in England in 2023/24, by ethnicity.

The Health Survey for England is an annual survey of the health of the population. It has an annually repeating core accompanied by different topic modules each year. The focus of the 2004 report is on the health of ethnic minorities with an emphasis on cardiovascular disease (CVD). The report also covers the behavioural risk factors associated with CVD such as drinking, smoking and eating habits and health status risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. For children the emphasis is on respiratory health. The headline tables represent the key results of the 2004 survey.

Between November 2020 and November 2021, it was found that 4.27 percent of the respondents of black ethnicity attended at least two live sports events in the last year. More information about sports in England can be found in the Dossier: Sport in England - Public funding and participation.

"Asian Welsh" and "Black Welsh" ethnic groups were included on the census questionnaire in Wales only, these categories were new for 2021.

This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in England and Wales by ethnic group. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021. This dataset shows population counts for usual residents aged 16+ Some people aged 16 years old will not have completed key stage 4 yet on census day, and so did not have the opportunity to record any qualifications on the census.

These estimates are not comparable to Department of Education figures on highest level of attainment because they include qualifications obtained outside England and Wales.
