Crop calendars provide valuable information on the timing of important stages of crop development such as the planting or Start of Season (SOS) and harvesting dates or End of Season (EOS). This information is critical for many crop monitoring applications such as crop-type mapping, crop condition monitoring, and crop yield estimation and forecasting. Spatially detailed information on the crop calendars provides an important asset in this respect, as it allows the algorithms to account for specific local circumstances while also maximizing their robustness and global applicability. Existing global crop calendar products, as produced by the Group on Earth Observations’ Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM) Crop Monitor, the United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the European Commission Joint Research Center’s Anomaly hot Spots of Agricultural Production (ASAP), generally provide this information only at national or subnational level. In this work, we present gridded SOS and EOS maps for wheat and maize that represent the crop calendars’ spatial variability at 0.5° spatial resolution. These maps are generated in the framework of WorldCereal, which is a European Space Agency (ESA) funded project whose cropland and crop-type wheat and maize algorithms at global scale and at 10 m spatial resolution require this information. The proposed maps are built leveraging the above noted global products (Crop Monitor, USDA-FAS, FAO, ASAP) whose datasets are combined into a baseline map and sampled to train a Random Forest algorithm based on climatic and geographic data. Their evaluation against test data from the baseline maps set aside for validation purposes show a good performance with SOS (EOS) R2 of 0.87 (0.92) and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 27 (26) days for wheat, showing the lowest errors (RMSE

Phenology indicates the cycle or season of a crop and, in this case, is defined by the dekad (D) corresponding to the start, maximum and end of the growing season. This information can be derived from satellite-based vegetation index time series. Phenology is delivered for a maximum of two growing seasons annually. The phenology for one growing season is therefore delivered as three raster files. The first raster indicates the Start of Season (SOS), the second the Maximum of Season (MOS) and the third represents the End of Season (EOS). With a maximum of 2 growing seasons annually, a full year is described by 6 raster files. The pixel values of the phenology data components are expressed in dekad numbers. The data is provided in near real time from January 2009 to present.
Data publication: 2020-01-01
Supplemental Information:
No data value: 255
Unit: D (dekad number)
New dekadal data layers are released approximately 5 days after the end of a dekad. A higher quality version of the same data layer is uploaded after 6 dekads have passed. This final version of the dekadal dataset has a higher quality because gap filling and interpolation processes, where needed, have been based on more data observations. This implies that other temporal aggregations (monthly, seasonal, annual), and layers that depend on those, are updated as well. Practically this means that a final annual aggregation of the most recent full calendar year can only be produced after the end of February. Likewise, the final monthly aggregation of the most recent calendar months can only be produced 2 full months later.

Data lineage:
Phenological information is derived from a time series of dekadal vegetation index composites (NDVI) applying the methodology described by Van Hoolst et al. (see methodology document for references). The input dekadal NDVI time series covers exactly three calendar years (3 x 36 = 108 dekads), with the target year in the middle (1-36 for the first year, 37-72 for the target year, 73-108 for the next year). A growing season is attributed to a calendar year if the EOS occurs in it or in the first 3 dekads of the following calendar year. Thus, EOS has a value between 37 and 75 whilst SOS pixel values must be smaller than 72. 251 denotes "no season" (if no growing season can be distinguished, which is true for perennial land cover and fallow cropland).
The following data is used to calculate Phenology: NDVI
Data component developed through collaboration with the FRAME Consortium. More information can be found at: http://www.fao.org/in-action/remote-sensing-for-water-productivity/en/
Until December 2019 the base input layers (NDVI, albedo, and fAPAR) for the Level 2 (100m) products were derived from the Proba-V satellite. Proba-V was decommissioned in June 2020. From January 2020 onwards the base input layers of NDVI, albedo and fAPAR for level 2 are derived from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.

TL3HDOD_5 is the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES)/Aura Level 3 (L3) 3 Deuterium Oxide Daily Gridded Version 5 data product. It consists of daily atmospheric temperature and volume mixing ratio (VMR) for the deuterium oxide atmospheric species, which are provided at 2 degree latitude by 4 degree longitude spatial grids and at a subset of TES standard pressure levels. TES was an instrument aboard NASA's Aura satellite and was launched from California on July 15, 2004. Data collection for TES is complete.
The TES Science Data Processing L3 subsystem interpolated L2 atmospheric profiles collected in a Global Survey onto a global grid uniform in latitude and longitude to provide a 3-D representation of the distribution of atmospheric gasses. The L3 standard data products are composed of L3 HDF-EOS grid data. A separate product file was produced for each different atmospheric species. TES obtained data in two basic observation modes: Limb or Nadir; Nadir observations, which point directly to the surface of the Earth, are different from limb observations, which are pointed at various off-nadir angles into the atmosphere. The product file may contain, in separate folders, limb data, nadir data, or both folders may be present. Specific to L3 processing were the terms Daily and Monthly representing the approximate time coverage of the L3 products. However, the input data granules to the L3 process are complete Global Surveys; in other words a Global Survey was not split in relation to time when input to the L3 processes even if they exceed the usual understood meanings of a day or month. More specifically, Daily L3 products represented a single Global Survey (approximately 26 hours) and Monthly L3 products represent Global Surveys that are initiated within that calendar month. The data granules defined for L3 standard products were daily and monthly.
